I Just Saw a PERFECT, BEAUTIFUL..KILL!!!
...Was outside, brrr. Saw a flock of pigeons flying around, and noticed off in the distance a few hundred yards, a big bird.
...The big bird flew higher and circled well above the pigeons...I could see it was a Red Tailed Hawk. He circled high above the pigeons for a couple of minutes, then folded his wings and went into a screamin' azz dive that would have made a P-51 Mustang pilot jealous!
Bam! Feathers Flew! [:D] The pigeon never knew what hit him! Pigeon and hawk tumbled for probably 50-75 feet with the hawk's wings trying to catch air to slow down...then gathered himself and landed about a hundred yards from me...Lunch!...[^]
... Awesome!...nice, very nice to see...[:p]

Cool.....That would be something to see. [^][^] The closest thing to that is once I saw a Bald Eagle swoop down and snag a fish out of the water near my boat as I was trolling in the lake. Neat to see. [:)][:)]

Hawks are awesome to watch. Couple quick hawk stories:
Was cutting hay and about 200yds in front of me, on the ground, was a hawk. Noticed something in his grip. As I got closer he flew off/up with whatever was in his grasp, still in his grasp. He was up maybe 100yds and then dropped it. It fell, hit the ground, a little dazed, and hopped off as fast as it could. Little cottontail would have surely been toast if I hadn't been making a B-line for the hawk.
Was dove hunting once, shot a dove and was walking over to pick it up. Everyone starts yelling, "Look out!". Turned to look and saw a big red tail, head high, coming straight at me. I ducked a little and he swooped down and got my dove. That happened twice that day.

I love the red tailed hawks. I used to fly with them when I had a hang glider.
I would see a red tail about a mile away, circling. Circling meant he was in a thermal. These birds are real pros at finding thermals. I would fly over there and join the hawk in the thermal. A couple of times I got 40 feet above the red tail, and we were about 3,000 feet above the ground. Both times, I stayed just above the bird for several minutes and just watched him fly.
It is a beautiful thing to watch these birds fly from that perspective. Their wing tip feathers are like fingers. They can adjust the individual feathers to fine tune their flight paths.0 -

Redtails used to make great targets before they became illegal to kill. They're pretty smart and you have to catch them way out there. My longest shot was a paced 335 yards. Model 70 Winchester, .220 Swift, 36.5 grains IMR 4064, 55 grain Hornady bullet, Weaver K-6 scope. Almost all the Redtails had dried blood and quail feathers in their talons. 0 -

Pigeons eat seeds, same as doves (they are the same family).
Nothing is as good as pigeon breast kabobs on the grill (marinaded overnight in Teriaki sauce for even better flavor).
I shot a pigeon one day, and a Baldie snagged it before it hit the ground (I regretted losing part of my dinner, but it was cool to see).
I've also seen Sparrow Hawks take out small birds that were feeding on top of the snow, also kinda cool to see.0 -

Gee, some of you guys came down pretty hard on JohnCarr. I took my time before I decided to post my comments on this thread after the attack JohnCarr received. But here goes. Here in this area there are thousands of crop land that was turned over to CRP. This CRP ground is a feed fest for predator such as coyotes and even the red tail hawks. These 2 predators have almost wiped out our pheasant and quail population here along with the cotton tail rabbits. Killing predators is not uncommon around here this is to include the red tail hawk. I agree they are a beautiful bird, but their numbers have increased here two fold. I have never killed one, but those who have are thinning the numbers here and helping to equal things out so that our game animals have a chance. Even our game wardens won't go out of their way to catch someone killing them, however they will fine you because they are protected. On officer has said, "Just make sure we don't see you kill one." So, I guess depending on your location, there is good and bad for everything and I don't criticize JohnCarr for killing them. 0 -
One of the Best wildlife sights that I remember is when I was popping a plug across a Bass pond and watching a large Dragonfly hover 3' above the water, all of a sudden a bass jumped out and try to catch the Dragonfly.
The Bass missed the first, second and third try and after the dragon fly moved about ten feet over, but still 3' above the water, the bass snagged it right out of the air. I reeled in and went home not even wanting to even catch a Bass after I saw it catch the Dragonfly.0 -
as a delivery driver, i have hawks and falcons fly in front of me all the time. one eager little guy squeezed between me and a semi carrying his newly captured mouse. 0 -
driving down the highway at 5am going hunting one day, a darn owl flew into the grill of my truck. Broke it to pieces with his little owl azz stickin' out![:D]

John Carr is admitting to doing something that is now illegal, I believe it is a federal crime.
It is an embarassment to this forum, and to ethical hunters, to have this kind of posting on here.0 -

There would not have to be a law enacted for me to NOT shoot a bird of prey.
For anyone that has spent forever in the wild hunting, or whatever, and watched these great birds; there is an awe and respect one gains from watching them. Their flying skills, just the way thye look, those eyes, that beak, the talons tells you they are something special.
For anyone to kill one intentionally is pathetic, I'll say it.
"Man, that's an AWESOME, Beautiful bird, think I'll kill it" ???? DUH! They Stalk, They HUNT! They don't set around pecking sheeet with the pigeons and other lame birds!
There are plenty of sheeet birds to shoot if you have to shoot a bird, and plenty of good birds when in season.
Sparrows, Grackles, Pigeans, Crows and Quail, Dove, Duck...no need to kill some of the most magnificient birds flying, LAWS or NOT..[xx(]
First time I ever saw a kill, yep, and a vid cam would have been wonderful! Saw a Sparrow Hawk right after he'd caught a field mouse hanging from his beak; sitting on the ground with his head turned, looking at me; THAT was a kodack moment too!...[:p]0 -

Did any of you ever read any of Elmer Keith's writings? When he was a young man, he killed eagles, because they often preyed on young lambs. Times change. Rules change.
I remember when you couldn't kill alligators under any circumstance. Now, Louisiana has a hunting season on them. Other states may have seasons that I don't know about. Protection served the gators so well that they became overpopulated in some areas.

Legislators want alligator hunting season
(Charleston-AP) December 26, 2006 - Concerns about the state's growing alligator population have some calling for an alligator hunting season.
State Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell of Charleston says that is needed as alligators become more of a nuisance. For instance a woman recently reported seeing a 12-foot alligator near swimming children.
Alligators were once an endangered species and their population bottomed out in the 1970s. But legislators say the species has rebounded.
State Senator Chip Campsen of the Isle of Palms says he has seen rice fields with so many alligators that he could almost walk on them.
And state Representative Chip Limehouse says it is nerve wracking to try to fish when hundreds of alligators are coming at you.
The state Department of Natural Resources is proposing a limited hunting season that could curb increasing nuisance alligator complaints. The state gets about five hundred a year.
Georgia, Florida and Louisiana all have alligator hunting seasons.
