Thought to ponder?
I know there are alot of people who believe there is nothing on the planet as good as the 1911 Handgun. And to a certain point Im right there with you. But in a night time situation say you were carrying your 1911 and if your like me, I carry a single Mag holder made by Bianchi. Two thugs jump out armed with a handgun and you are lucky enough to find cover and the perp fires at you, so then you return fire with your .45 acp. It appears this guy really wants what you have and is willing to do what ever it takes to get it. So the 3 of you exchange gunfire and before you know your slide locks back on the 8th RD. You grab your spare 8 RD Mag and again engage in returning gunfire. Now would you rather have the 16 RD .40 S&W or .357sig or the 17 RD 9MM. Be honest and remember we cant control these encounters the way we would like, but we can prepare for them.

I like capacity. 0 -
as soon as i get my CCW im definately getting something in 9mm. maybe a glock.
Capacity! !!!!0 -
I'd surely like to think that if I've fired 6 rounds out of my 45 that the gunfight is over. 0 -
You simply don't need the knock down power of a 45 in almost all cases. Unless the bad guy in on drugs and completely out of him mind, a hit from a 38 or even a 32 (yeah, I'll get some flack for this) will make him think - "damn that hurts" - and will take the fight out of him. I'll take my 9 (am I getting too urban here?) with 10-17 rounds anytime. 0 -
I'll take the superior .357 SIG any day... 0 -
XD-45 -- 13 rounds of .45ACP 0 -
Big bullets.

I don't care for the 1911 too much, so I'll stick with mt CZ 40P.[;)][8D] 0 -
I'll take low capacity it means I can punch through whatever cover the perp has taken..... 0 -

Note to self. Don't waste ammo shooting at nothing, or in laying down suppressive fire. Shoot when you have a target.
My .45 auto works fine for me, however, I often carry other makes, models and calibers than the 1911 in .45, depending on the time of year and what I am weariing/where I am going to be. I do generally carry 2 reloads, whether mags, speed strips, or speed loaders.
Realistically, most people who carry, do so as a "just in case" option and therefore do not carry a bunch of ammo.0 -
[:p][:p]I LIKE MY 12 GAUGE REM 870 LOADED WITH 8 ROUNDS OF 00 BUCKSHOT.IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO DO THE JOB PRETTY WELL[:p] 0 -
Papa Bear said, "this .45 hits hard, but there are too few rounds in the magazine!"
Baby Bear said, "this 9mm has wots of wounds in the magazine, but it don't hit vewwy hard!"
Mama Bear said, "this .40 I got from that hunter I chewed up last week is juuuust right!"
they all smiled and were happy.0 -

Amen, never get rid of mine!0 -
In 99.999999% of situations, you will be lucky to get off 2 rounds, much less 7. Hi capacity is overated for a self defense side arm. 0 -
I feel just fine with a double magazine case carrying a 2 pack of reloads. If I cann't defend myself against 2 or 3 attackers with 25 rounds somethings wrong. 0 -
1911 all the way. Stay low, conserve ammo, and let them come to you. 0 -
Glock 21 carries 13 45 ap rounds in each magazine.
Para P14 carries 14 rounds of 45 ap in a 1911 style platform.
Springfield XD45 carries 13 rounds of 45 in the magazine.
The choices are there for high cap 45 if you want one.
I would not feel inadequate with a 9mm but there is something to be said about the boom of the larger calibers that is very intimidating.
Remember Dade county shootout where the FBI agents were over powered by bigger firearms and in the heat of the gunfight the survivors say they knew it without a doubt. They didn't know it by casually comparing opposing firepower but by the much louder booms from larger more powerful firearms.
I will stay with a 45 for my choice.0 -

I would rather have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.
Well I would rather have 7 rounds left in the magazine after a gun battle then to need a 9th round when a crazy guy is pointing a loaded gun in my direction.
The police used to think a 6 shooter was all they needed but found out different after the criminals were carrying high cap pistols.
You do not find to many police officers who will carry a 6 shooter alone anymoe. Atleast not around the big cities.
Maybe in Montana they still do[;)]0 -
Everything I have ever heard on this topic has been that three or four rounds at the most is all that anyone has EVER heard of using in any circumstance. I am not one to go out into places where I may need my gun MORE....plus I feel better knowing that if I hit them the WILL NOT get up or likely live through the situation. If I could stand to carry a bigger gun I would put a BIGGER hole in them....not more tiny holes. 0 -
HK USP Expert - 20 round mag of 45.
Oh wait, you said this would be your carry gun. [:0]
nevermind.....0 -
glock 23, 13 rnds of .40 cal., best of both worlds. 0 -
I like the 1911. I like the 1911 a lot, but I'll stick with my .357 five shooter. 0 -

I emptied my PPK at a car carrying thieves a few years back. Would have liked a bigger mag, or better yet a rifle, but what the hell. I got my point across.0 -
why don't they make a .22 with, like, 40 rounds in a normal sized mag? (not those calico spiral things, just a normal bottom feeder) 0 -
Like my Sig p220 - start with 8, finish with 7...should be enough. 0 -
I haven't heard of situations where most of the time you only use a couple rounds. Most actual shootings the adrenline is pounding so hard people unload the firearm without even realizing it. That's just what I hear from police officers that have dealt with the aftermath.
I'd love to see some actual statistics on the subject rather then peoples thoughts.
P.S. I'll stick with my P220 if I can get away with it. Otherwise I'll go with my Colt Defender.0 -
I too prefer the .40 for a carry gun. It seems to have the best of the "knockdown" power and carry capacity worlds covered.
That being said, I love the way a 1911 feels in my hand. It just fits. I wish they made a 1911 style .40 that I could afford. The closest thing in .40 cal that I have come to fitting in my hand like a 1911 was a Walther P99.
Of course, all of this is coming from a guy who carries a 5 shot revolver in .38 special.[:I]
If I were in the situation originally described, the gun that I would want is the gun that I had with me. Or, my T/C Encore in 7mm-08. [}:)][;)][:p]0 -
I like 17-round 9mm because it's just easier at the range. And I sincerely hope I'm never in a situation as described where I "need" 34 rounds! 0
