I think I'm gonna do it....Any advice on what to look for in a ring?

In my view (which will not coincide with that of the prospective bride, something other than a diamond. Diamonds are common rocks whose high price is artifically maintained by the DeBeers monopoly, and the limited release of stones annually. Better is better than bigger. Take time to learn about diamonds from some source other than the jewler you are buying from, and buy quality. 0 -

To her credit, she doesn't want me to spend 3 months salary on a rock....
Spending limit is about $600-$800
She just wants a "real" diamond (not CZ)....it doesn't have to be big0 -

Congrats Rack Ops. My advice would be to bring her in on any decision you make. My wife informed me the other day I am not to buy her any more diamonds of any sort. She saw the movie "Blood Diamond" and looked into how diamonds are mined. Okay thats more guns for me. Again congrats! 0 -

You have checked the pawn shops for a CASH deal haven't you???? There are at least four large wedding sets in the store right now and if you offered $600 for the largest one here (three marquise stones about 2 carats total) you could have it. 0 -

Yes, this would be my first marriage. Hers too.
I doubt I'm going to buy it at a jewelry store, too much of a mark-up.
No offence to anyone here, but I'm leary of Pawn Shops and/or used rings. The ring (and stone) is a symbol. I don't want a ring that represents someone else's failed marriage. Frankly, I'd feel like I was insulting her, even if she didn't know the difference.
I'm considering purchasing online, through something like Amazon or Overstock.....thoughts?

I was also lucky enough to have a woman that likes simple things nor could I have afforded a massive rock. I think hers is something like a 3/4 karat or something like that. I don't really remember. We will be happily married 6 months on the 14th. What sucks for you is that she knows its coming. I think my wife just about crapped her pants when I presented it to her. 0 -

By the way, the $600-$800 figure is my own. If someone was to ask her, she would probably say something in the $400-$600 range.

I would consider at least buying a ring at a pawn shop for the stone, and then buying the setting from a jewler.
You can get 2-3X the stone by buying a used rock.
And remember: It is a rock. Nothing more.

First ? is if this going to be a suprise or does she know your going to pop the ?. If suprise then look at what she already has white gold,yellow gold and so and what syle, fancy,gaudy or simple.Ask the dealer if you can eturn it, if yes do not have it sized do that after just in case she says no or does not care for the style.If she knows then go pick one out together.Its a rock! a few flaws or color
flaws are no big deal unless you are going to hock it later!No one will ever tell unless you tell them or have a loop and know exactly what to look for.Save the money for the wedding ring and also think ahead and have a set that mates together so she can wear both after.
And for you Id go with a plain gold comfort ring, feels good easy to polish and keep clean. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!0 -

I got my experience the hard way, you always have to pay for education. I seemed to follow my late friend louis Grizzard's advice, givr a woman a house every year or so (she gets the house with the divorce) She's going to dismantle the diamond ring you gave her and have it reset into a coctail ring anyway.

Remember the 3 C's ... Color, Clarity and Karat. If you have any plans to "upgrade the stone in the future go for color and clarity over size you'll do better on a trade up.
