Was looking at engagement rings the other day.....
I think I'm gonna do it....Any advice on what to look for in a ring?
I better hunker down.....smartass comments are going to be coming in the minute I post this [:p]

Quality over Quantity
Certain stones look better on thin fingers than others and vice versa.
I got lucky and knew the person sellin me the ring. I got it for less than 1/3 of the price tag!
Hope you can pull the same deal. I was in the same boat with a limited budget. She'll love it regardless.
Good luck.0 -
This is BR not classic...
I dislike large diamonds, they look phoney and gawdy....A small diamond or whatever stone she wants is so much prettier, and classy...
And for what its worth, you dont deserve her....not if you are calling her a "bit dense" already in the relationship...[:o)]0 -
I was lucky enought to visit Haifa a few times. I got my wife's stone there. Much bigger than I could have afforded otherwise.
She will love whatever you get her. It's what it symbolizes. Size only matters...well, where it matters.
You can always up quantity later.0 -
I really like Robbins Diamonds ( I don't know if they have them where you are). I had about 10 different diamonds under a microscope for about 2-3 days until I found the one I really liked. I keep telling my wife I'm going to pawn it cause it's worth more than most my guns put together!!! No matter what you spend, get insurance on it in case it ever gets lost. 0 -
I agree with He Dog. My wife's favorite stone looks like a diamond, but is not one. The thing only cost me $500.00 bucks, but looks just as good, if not much better than most diamonds that cost $5,000 to $10,000.
Maybe the ladies here can help you out.0 -

I went to Shane co. The best experience I have ever had in a jewelry store. You can buy small and move up later.Whatever you give for the ring they will atleast match when you trade in for something bigger.Free lifetime cleaning, sizing and maintenance. If it ever gets stolen take them the police report and they will give you another.Take the money people spend on insurance and get more ring. With all that being said I would never buy online(site unseen) or form a pawn shop(you buy today their gone tommorow)Go to the website and look around. 0 -

+1 on locust fork raid a few pawn shops you can trust. buy the diamond and have a jewerly store sell you a setting, some pawn shops offer this to or they know who to send you to. will save you big bucks. 0 -
dont do it, just think of the nice gun you can buy.
and tell her that its her's.
you can get a nice gun, think about it.0 -
I got three rings from my father, family rings. All three were quite nice, and all had nice stories. One was my great grandmother's ring, one was my mother's ring, and the third was a ring my father's mother used to wear to church.
I took them all into school one day and sat down with some female teachers and told them I was looking through them and choosing one for my finance. I wanted to get their opinions. Well, I launched into the history of the first one, how my great grandmother got it from her husband when she was only 19 years old and how. . .
And one of the women leaned over and put her hand on my arm and said gently, "The really big one. She'll want the really big one."0 -
Don't buy a used diamond - you are not getting a used bride! Forget about size (that's what I told my first wife) and get quality. You can always get a larger ring a few years down the road when the money starts rolling in! Believe me, she will always remember the first one - no matter what the cost. 0 -
huh, everything i have is used[V] but not used up[:D] 0 -
Round diamonds are of higher quality. All the other shapes are diamonds with flaws that were cut to mask them.
Find a friendly pawnshop and let the owner know what you are doing. They keep the really good diamonds in the back. You should be able to buy loose and have it set in a new mounting. Some shops will even be able to order you a setting for it at a substantial savings.
For $600-$800, you should be able to get a 1/2-3/4 carat round cut diamond of good quality set in a new ring.
Remember that the mark up in retails establishments is probably around 500%[:0].
How do I know these things? Well after buying 3 engagement rings and having a BIL with a shop, you learn.[:D]0 -
Take her down to that state park in Arkansas and mine out your own diamond and have it mounted. You keep whatever you find, and working together to find it will give it much more meaning.
For me I'm lucky. My wife of almost 28yrs, only has a wedding band. I asked her if she would like a diamond the other night and she said, "What for, I would just loose it." Got to admit, she's a cheap date. Luv her!0 -
...one with a return policy & receipt. ROFLMAO Go for it!

How do you know whether a diamond in a ring at Zales (for instance) or any other diamond store hasn't been used before? (taken out of a "used ring" and reset).
Some of the best buys I've seen lately on diamonds were in pawn shops.
Buy a good diamond and get it reset.0 -
Have her watch the movie Blood Diamond with you and then you can decide. 0 -
$600 - $800? You can't get jack for that! I got my wife (engagement ring) a 1/2c certified VS1, D color for around $3000 with setting - and that was at Mervis. I recently bought 1.2 carat certified earrings in SI1 F on a super-sale at BBB and paid around $3500.
For what you are spending, you will be embarassed at what she is wearing on her finger (and so will she). You'll be lucky to get a 1/4 carat, which looks miniscule in a ring. Spend more, even if you have to sell something (a gun). You won't regret it.
Also don't scrimp on the setting - get 18k gold. Any jewelry store that doesn't sell higher than 14k (most mall stores) is not worth buying anything from - 14k is CRAP.
I would stear clear of the mall stores in general, mostly because the employees there are complete idiots and the store will totally rip you off (accept BBB).0 -

It appears that your relationship differs from mine.
A girl who is embarrassed to wear a ring that represents her engagement isn't worth having.
We're both relatively poor, so dumping 3 grand on a ring isn't an option. That money can be spent better elsewhere.
The only thing she requires is that the diamond be "real" and "new"....That shouldn't be too hard to find0 -
No such thing as a "used diamond".
Mrs. Plaid new what she was getting. A 1K round from a pawn shop. But she still wanted something "romantic" when I asked her. So I went to Grandpa Pigeons at Collinsville and bought the cheapest diamond I could find at the jewelry counter. I had to tell the woman behind the counter three times "No. Something cheaper" before she showed me something that looks like a tiny speck of dirty cotton.
I think it was $20 but still technically a diamond. I've probably seen better diamond on core drill bits.
So when I asked Mrs. Plaid, I gave her the POS ring.[:D]0 -
My condolences. [:p] [:p] [:p] 0 -

The type of relationship is immaterial. When she is walking around with a 1/4 carat ring and all her friends have 1/2, 1, 2, etc rings, she is going to be embarrased. I am sure she is a great girl and won't hold it against you or even say anything. But things like that are quite important to girls, whether you think it is or not.
Actually I did scrimp on my wife's ring a little - I should have got 1 carat. 1/2 is ok, and it is a super high quality diamond, but I should have gotten a 1 carat. She will get one someday, when I've been drinking a lot most likely!0 -

Guess we'll just have to disagree on this point. I think I know my girl by now.....I hope I do, anyways
Her best friend got a nice engagement ring. It cost about $3200. Nice stone, a beautiful ring......
Now her friend doesn't have a cell phone, her parents have to help with the utility payments, ect........boy she sure does have a nice ring though [B)]0 -

Ring [:0] hmmm fisrt find you a good shovel and a good coffee can... bury anything that you really really wish to keep after the divorce... I know??? It won't happen to you... so hide it form the Chinese cause with the idiot leaders we've had lately that may have a higher % possibility than the 61% chance that your marriage will fail!!!
You learned the 3 R's in school.... Wake up and learn the 4 F's before it is too late.......
Ring.....BAH HUMBUG!!!!!0 -
Why not take your intended fiancee to a nice jewelry store and casually look at jewelry - including engagement rings - together? Just browse and find out what settings she likes or gravitates towards.
If she tries on one or two rings to pass the time, make note of her ring size. She may even drop you a few "hints" by stating that this is beautiful or that is ugly. Trust me, women are very smart and know how this game is played.
Then, on another day and time, go back to that store alone and pick out a complete ring or a stone to go with a particular setting she likes and that your budget can afford.
Remember that if you buy her a diamond ring, a diamond is an investment. IMHO, a smaller, clearer and brighter more "perfect" white diamond is better than one that's larger but slightly milky or yellow or dull or visually flawed. There are a lot of larger diamonds where the carbon particles or flaws can be clearly seen with just the naked eye.
In any event, best of luck!0 -

It is NOT important to ALL GIRLS....but if it is to some, then I agree with Rack Ops..they arent worth having....The size of my ring was and is not important, I dislike large stones of any kind...as a matter of fact I would have gone without a ring when Classic and I married if we couldnt afford one...I dont care about the ring, I cared about the man I was marrying....
To me when you give a girl or a guy for that matter a large diamond ring and lots of jewellry, you are just trying to buy their affection, and in my opinion, neither one is worth having...0 -
Got that right BR. If I wanted to buy a girl I wouldn't do it with a diamond!
As for used/new - well you need to know who you are dealing with. Sure you can get one from a pawn shop, have it reset, and tell her that "this is just for you baby". She won't ever know - but you will for the rest of your life.
One of my best friends is in the jewelry design & manufacturing business. If anyone would like to contact him for a custom (not from Zales) piece - just e-mail me.0
