Buying a .243- Suggestions?

My budget is $450 for a bolt action .243, not including scope.
I like Rugers and Winchesters and might consider a Remington or CZ.
Likes, dislikes?

Nothing too fancy, but I like clean lines in a satin finish wood stock.

I will not consider Weatherbys, Sako, or anything more exotic.
No bull barrels or synthetic anything. I'm looking for light weight and will be hunting with it. Mostly will be on the range though. I shoot all my toys!

    Savages are good shooting guns and have a nice price tag on them, but they do leave a lot to be desired when it comes to looks and quality of their stocks. I personally would look for a used Ruger 77 or Remington 700, but I am kind of biased towards them.[:p]

    I think the advice about the Stevens is spot-on. However you can get a Savage 110 around my parts for about what you have to spend. It has a little better wood if that means much to you.

    I bought a Stevens 200 in .223 for $240 and a Pentax Gameseeker for $100.About $20 for rings and bases and have a hell of a good rifle,ready to go, for 360 bucks.You can spend big money but you don't have to.

    I have the ruger model 77 in 257 bob, nicest bolt action I ever owned or handled

    A hunting partner uses a Howa blue/synthetic in 243. I know it's made in Japan but it's a very well built gun that doesn't cost much more than a Savage. It is his only centerfire rifle and he uses it for coyotes and deer. He uses 95 grain Ballistic Tips for everything.

    I'm looking strongly at the Ruger.
    I had one in .26 06 with the heavy barrel but, sadly sold it. I hunt the hill country of S. Texas and it was a beech carrying that thing around and sold it to buy a Winchester .270 Lightweight back in '88.
    I still have that one.

    Replace the Ruger trigger with a Jewell and you will have a fine rifle.
