Buying a .243- Suggestions?
My budget is $450 for a bolt action .243, not including scope.
I like Rugers and Winchesters and might consider a Remington or CZ.
Likes, dislikes?
Nothing too fancy, but I like clean lines in a satin finish wood stock.
I will not consider Weatherbys, Sako, or anything more exotic.
No bull barrels or synthetic anything. I'm looking for light weight and will be hunting with it. Mostly will be on the range though. I shoot all my toys!

But wasn't really looking for a .243 at the time.

if 450.00 is your bottom line get the stevens and a bushnell banner scope.probally a good ecnomic package.if you have extra you can probally get a savage for the price.anyway either one is better than a 710 remmy or 770 remmy.those rifles are very overated.for out of the box accuracy the savage or stevens is the way to go. 0 -

I have a spare Burris Fullfield II 3x9 ready to go on this one.
I'll look for the Stevens rifle, but I don't see them around here in N. Texas. Never seen one at a show or at any dealers I visit.

That Stevens is basically a Savage Model 110 without the accutrigger and a cheaper stock.

Just got my Ruger 77 in .243 Win for the $450 range. I like the Ruger because it's almost exactly like the pre-64 winchester Model 70. 3 position Model 70 safety and controlled feed bolt. Satin stock and excellent bluing ..... None of the other guns comes with a scope base integral to the reciever and matching rings, A good set of bases and rings for the other rifles ...ie,e Leupold can cost you over $60 more and even then you have a bolt on base vs an integral base... Mine shot 3/4 inch 100yd group with Winchester Power Point 100 gr. ammo, handload with Hornady 100 gr short just as well. Gander Mt sells them in that price range, but I found the best price at a local FFl guy that charges his cost plus $3o paperwork. o450&& 0 -

New, the Savage or Stevens is going to be the only way to go. If you're looking at used, you should be able to find a Remington 700 in pretty good shape, possibly even with rings installed. 0 -
I've taken 2 Mulie/Blacktail bucks with the 243. My rifle was a Ruger#1, kinda spendy. The point of this is that no matter what platform you use, you need a well constructed bullet of 90-100gr. I used factory Federal 95gr nosler partition ammo. These animals are usually over a 100yds. out and can be tough to bring down even with a well placed shot from a light bullet. Shot placement and bullet construction are important. The 243 is a great round for a young hunter, but has it's limitations. Good luck![:)] 0 -
I have a Savage 243. Bought it for $350 with a cheap scope and it's served me well. The accutrigger is a huge plus. I don't see the advantage of paying two to three times that price for something that is going to perform about the same. If I had to do it over again, I'd upgrade to a better scope, but that would still be less that $500 for everything. Just my opinion. 0 -

Ruger 77 triggers are crummy, so you would need to put an addition $100 into replaceing the trigger.

Savage is the best rifle for the money today, and it also has the best trigger on the market. You cannot beat one for the price, heck they could charge "remington" money for one and it would still be the best deal running. Other than that you can also look at the Howa 1500, another great value in a great shooting rifle. 0 -
I just bought a used Remington 700 BDL in 243 Winchester at a gun show. Paid $400 and the gun didn't have a mark on it. You can find similar buys here or at the other online sites. 0
