Charcoal or gas?

Charcoal. Taste is much better. Not as convenient, but still not a big deal. If you go with charcoal, get one of the "chimney" looking charcoal starters. Two sheets of newspapers in the compartment underneath, fill the top with charcoal, and light the paper. No lighter fluid or other nasty tasting fluids needed to light. Put it on your grill grate and come back in 30 minutes to perfect coals. Dump em out and start grilling! Also try to find hardwood charcoal, not briquets with their nasty binders and glue.

i personally like charcoal because i like to use apple wood for cooking with. but its more time consuming. gas allows you to do it quick but you still have to pay for propane which now is high priced. i keep everything simple[8D]

best solution of course, just as it is with guns, it to buy one of each

One of each. Nice gas grill for when gas is the best tool for the job, use charcoal when it is appropriate/best/most convienent as well.

Of course, this is coming from a guy who cooks ribs and lamb in the oven and then finishes on a smokey char grill.... or sometimes over gas with a chip/rosemary packet.

Better cooking and taste with charcoal. No flareups like gas. Quit using gas years ago with no plans to return.

+1, though my 'second' is a 55gal smoker. When I ancually have the time to use it, nothing else comes close. [;)]

I have to go for charcoal..have a 55 gal drum that takes as much as needed. Have cooked steaks for 200 using 2 of these. Can't beat the flavor and I can't get used to gas.

Overall, charcoal grills will provide the best taste. However, gas, especially those connected to your home natural gas line, are more convenient and you will definitely grill a lot more. If you get at least a 4 burner it is very easy to slow cook and smoke over indirect heat. Just add a smoke box or other method for using your favorite wood chips (hickory, mesquite, etc.). And, you can put a water pan under the meat to catch drippings and create self basting.

whats your favorite restaurant for steak?

what do you think they use? gas, with few exceptions

charcoal has it place, and a taste of its own, but if you want to taste the meat for what it is or a marinade, gas

the key is only clean the surface let it season through out, with gas you will find yourself grilling much more often, and cheaper, also buy a second tank, you will run out in the middle of cooking

We have a Traeger cooker that uses pellets that you can get in many different varities, I just always use mesquite. Never had anything cook quite like it, no matter whether fish, whole turkey, prime rib( I can do 3 15/20 lb'ers at once) or just burgers and most amazing is what it does to bacon, it cooks flat with no wrinkles.
Amazing cooker, downside is if we take it to the bushes with us it means we take a little genset also.

    Next in line Charcoal

Gas (Coleman fuel or propane) is for the coffee pot and skillets in hunting camp

Gas, no question. Ease of use, convenience, and price (one tank of propane goes a LONG way).

Have lg texas made smoker grill, ya baby! charcoal with Jack Dainles smokin chips added just before the beef or tender loin is tossed on.
use gas at the club weekly, honestly the gas is like cooking indoors,it works, and you can blacken meat, but the flavor is flat. Gas is great for cooking potatoes or boiling water for clams, but use the bricks for flavor.

Thanks to all for your replies.I was leaning towards gas but the wife wanted charcoal. Need I say more? It`s a good thing I don`t ask her what guns to buy. Someday I hope to get a gas grill to just for the heck of it. Didn`t get the back straps marinated in time so we just had burgers. My belly is full and I`m happy. Now I`ll wash it all down with an MGD.

forget gas or that compressed coal dust...a smoker and fruit wood, apple, pear, cherry...the only way to go.
wife said she would NEVER eat stuff off the grill when i got it till she finally broke down and tasted a hunk of beef smoked for nearly an hour
now EVERY time she has meat it is the same question, feel like lighting the grill?
we use it 12 months a year, neighbor used to yell out that ya might be a redneck when makeing dinner requires a hat, coat, coleman lantern and a snow shovel!

I agree with Rustybones...both. I have both. Since I'm from TX, grilling and BBQing are two very separate cooking techniques. some people don't seem to understand that.

When in a hurry, I use gas and still put mesquite and/or oak and hickory chips on the gas grill--great for steaks. When I have some time and/or wish to do ribs, I go with charcoal. When we have our annual church function, me and some buds go with the BBQ trailers (double axle trailers) and cook up to 50 briskets at a time. Have a few brews and solve alot of world problems sitting up cooking all night.

You just can't beat charcoal taste. Everyones always proud as they can be about their new gas grill, but I have never tasted anything that comes off of them that are as good as charcoal or a smoker.

    1911...

    Peter Luger's in Brooklyn NY.

By FAR, the best steak I ever had. Going back some day. Not cheap.

All dry aged beef shorts and the only thing they serve is porterhouse and you CANNOT tell them how to cook it. They allready have that down to perfection.

I agree with both--they both have their place. With my gas grill, in 30 min (while STILL waiting for coals to get going on ye olde Weber Kettle) I can be done cooking and sitting down to a great chop/steak/slab of dead animal--with roasted veggies on the side.

But for slow smoking (ribs, brisket, pheasant in the fall), nothing beats wood. My smoker, unfortunately, had a run-in with a John Deere 4040/snowblower combo last winter, and is hors de combat.

I've got my eye on a Big Green Egg. My boss had one when I lived down south, made incredible BBQ.

Natural Gas, just more convenient and better heat control, but what do I know I worked for a natural gas co for 39 years.[:D][:p][^]
