Cabellas
would like the opinion of the forum on what happened to me today at Cabellas in E Hartord CT.
I took a number.
I immediately went to a Colt US Army Speical that I had examined one week before. It locked up tight, everything was right. Some holster wear.
I waffled last week but came back today to buy the Colt beating myself up for not buying last week.
Ahhh crap...... A salesman approached these two buyers and they asked to see my coveted Colt...
I was hovering over the counter waiting for my number to be called while two guys were examining my prize. I was kicking my ass knowing they were going to buy this US ARMY SPECIAL right out from under my reticent decision from the week's past.
They took about ten agonizing minutes to decide they didn't want to buy the Colt. It was a long.....long.......long.....10 minutes.
YES..they said NO.........
The salesman then took the Colt from their reluctant hands and to my surprise, didn't put it back in the case.
I immediately said to him, "hey Davis, I want to buy that Colt."
He turned his back to me and placed it upon the rack case for the shotguns.
I repeated: "Dave, I want to buy that gun."
He retorted, "ughhh wait." as he scooped up my prize and walked back into the "back room".
You all know the "back room" where you have to slide you ID card to get into.
I followed him as he disappeared into that "mysterious back room".
I waited for about two minutes and he emerged with a pink piece of paper in his hand.
As I observered this, I once again said to Dave:
"Hey Dave, I want to buy that Colt."
He abrubrtly turned to me, next to another salesman and said:
"I am buying this gun"
I was stunnned....How could a salesman buy this gun right out from underneath my waiting hands?
I crumpled up my "bakery ticket", threw it in a barrel of promotions, and marched away seething in his "coup d'etat"
Nope....not a chance was this slimeball getting away with this jig.
I marched down to the courtesy desk and promptly asked for the store manager.
Two minutes later, he was beside me, and I explained the situation. We, together, went back upstairs to the gun shop. I hung back as the manager confronted the salesman. They had to come up with an explanation.
The manager came back and spun a story that the salesman had that particular Colt on "layaway" for himself, and somehow it was returned to the glass case for sale. Huhhhhh???????????
I saw the salesman come out from the back with a new pink layaway slip for himself while I waited for him to sell me the revolver???
I was there one week ago and it was for sale. I was there today, in the present moment, and it was for sale. On lay away ???????Huh??????????
The funny aspect was, the guys who were examining the Colt were really talking it up. Great lock up, old, nice bluing, etc etc...
Salesman interrupted: "Oh, I am a Smith & Wesson Man" he bragged..
The two fellas were so close to buying this Colt I was resigned to their championship over my waffling stupidity.
But hey, they declined and I was "YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To his credit, the manager explained that this salesman had "made a mistake" and indeed I could purchase the Colt.
Ahhhh ha... I had a commitment for my Colt US Army Special circa 1922 in almost pristine condition. Ahh some holster wear.
I went through the druggery of the paperwork and to my surprise, and delight, I had a "in store 10% discount" upon an already super low price for this Colt.
So..here is the question:
Would you be pissed off about the salesman's trickery?
Or would you be happy, because not only did Cabellas "do the right thing", but also gave me a 10% discount on an already very underpriced Colt ($259.00)

went there tonight and the shelves were packed with ammo, well everything except .357 and .22.
I haven't seen so much commercial .223 on the shelves in months0 -
Went to the one in East Grand Forks, MN last week. Wasn't impressed. Overpriced, overcrowded, and understocked (at least firearms wise). It's just a giant tourist trap. Thankfully, I didn't get trapped. 0 -
Giant store in Iowa city has just about any firearm you could ever want. I tend to get lost in the gun section which is a 1/4 of the store. I was not Impressed with the cabelas in prarie du chein. 0 -
I feel better know. Never been to a Cabelas, but I have been to a Bass Pro Shop and thought the same thing. No desire to go there. Know I'm not missing much. 0 -

The Kansas City Cabela's is a nice store with a good supply of firearms, however they are priced a little high. I like to go and drool all over their Gun Library. If you take the time to go through their website, it lists all their store's offerings. They also showcase each store's specialty decor. Kansas City's is mule deer. Quite impressive. Now if yo want to talk about lame, shop at "Dorks".

Hamburg, PA is impressive. It's not cheap, and every time I go there there's some guy talking about how he can get such and such $50 cheaper at Crazy Larry's flea market the next town over. Of course said guy ignores the very smart fellows behind the counter who can explain anything, the nice bathrooms, the stunning wildlife displays and aquariums, and on and on. I always chat with somebody in the gun library when I visit and I'm just knocked out by how much they know. 0 -
Those big chain shops are cool to visit, but they are extremely expensive I've found. 0 -
bought my remington model 700 sps .300 win-mag from the east grand forks cabellas for $500 bucks last spring (brand new) 0 -
We always stop at the Hamburg Pa store for a pit stop when we drive north.
The stuffed animal display is something else as are the huge live trout in their pond.
Noone seems to care that the prop on the J-3 Cub floatplane, hanging from the ceiling, turns the wrong way but that's a minor point.
Plenty of reasonable used long arms and the Library collection is something to salivate over.
Cafeteria food is good except deserts were disappointing.
We came away after Thanksgiving with full bellies and a cheapo shirt jacket that I'd recommend. It's Moose Creek (made in Cambodia) in black and dark red wool like material with satin lining. The other colors were lighter weight, made in other countries.
Cabellas is always a pleasant stop.0 -
I've spent a small fortune online with Cabelas over the last year. Lots of selection. Don't go there to buy guns though. It's not worth it. However, you can't beat all of the variety and selection when it comes to clothing and accessories and ammo and just about anything else you'd need or want to camp/hunt/fish.
I usually stop at the Owatonna, MN store at least once a year when I'm visiting the folks in Minneapolis.0 -

Forgot to add how they only have one sign on Hwy 2 for Cabellas, and how I got us lost in Grand Forks looking for it. I can't believe I missed two bronze moose fighting. 0 -
Cabelas, and Bass Pro both carry the Richardson knives that I sell.
Cabelas buys about 2,500 knives per month from that shop, which
interferes greatly with my efforts sometimes.lol
I've been to the big Bass Pro in springfield and they openly display
the Richardson knives...do the Cabels stores have them on display, or
are they a catalog only item for them?0 -
I shop online with them or Tom Redmond's for my Archery equipment. 0 -
Good selection of guns and very good prices for a retail store for ammo. Got .30-06 for $9/box at the one in Phoenix a week or so back!! Good selection of accessories and whatnot. I was a little surprised to be talking to someone in the ammo department who didn't know what 6.5 Swede was, but I guess not everyone can be as smart as us.[;)] 0 -
The last time I was through Iowa City, IA, July, 2006, Cabellas did not have a store there. There is a very large Scheels All Sports store which I have visited many times. 0 -
I'm just a half-hour from the original Cabelas. I love that place. The folks are real friendly and helpful. But their prices on guns would make an Saudi oil prince blush. I'll never buy a firearm from 'em. But I do get a whole lot of reloading and other supplies there. 0 -
The only Cabellas store I have been to is in Sydney Nebraska back when I was still driving truck. I recomend everyone to stop by and brouse at that one if they have time as it is a very nice store.
I go to Bass Pro quite often in Concord NC.
Yes There prices are a bit high. But the stuff I do buy from them is hard to find anywhere else and theirs are high quality. (I am talking stuff like my turkey fryer, smoker, and the like). I also buy alot of fishing stuff from Bass Pro, but I look in the bargin bins for it to get good deals. I also have 4 Bass Pro fishing rods that I really like.
In all I think they are good specialty stores, but as with ANY specialty store you are going to pay higher prices.0 -
I like the one in Buda, TX. Great gun collection. Picked up a 20ga O/U last time I was there.
As for the one in Owatonna, MN, I happened to be there when they were having on of their blow out sidewalk sales. Great stuff everywhere, great prices. Spent a bunch a money, but the best deal by far was a brand new pair of Cabelas hiking boots for $6! That's right, six bucks!0 -
the closes one i have is st.clairevilles ohio 2 and a half hours away thonk i will check them out during my vacation in mid to late january. 0 -
I've been to the one outside Wheeling and now to the new one in Arizona. Lots of eye candy, lots of stuff.
As far as the guns go, there are tons of them, but they are way overpriced. The wildlife mounts and trophy room make it worth the trip.
Of course there are always plenty of nice looking outdoor and soccer Moms to browse at.[;)]0 -

You do need to shop around, they do have some good deals.
A not so good deal this last season Lowe's had the same North American Outdoor's turkey fryer that Bass Pro sell's for $119.00 for $79.98, after my discount I gave about $50.00 for the unit.0 -

The amusement park atmosphere of the one in Gelendale, AZ did not come cheap, I suspect. Haven't gone there but I hear that it's like a wonderland. Someone's got to pay for the nifty appointments, stuffed critters, popcorn machines, animated displays, etc. May as well be anyone who shops there. That's why I like the local gun stores and no-frills gun (sporting goods) department in Wal-Mart. A) Keeps out crowds of people just looking for a place to crash for a few hours

their reloading equipment prices are some of the best out there,..even the wholesale catalogs often lose to Cabelas prices. I buy lots of bullets, brass, dies, etc from them. 0 -
Have been to both Cabela's in Neb - Sydney and Kearney.
Ok. About 15-20% overpriced on items....just have to wait for the sales.
The gun guys in Sydney...at least the ones that I have spoken with, don't know that much. Same with Kearney. Reloading...um...forget it.
It has become a yuppy store.

Campcook--the Cabelas in Rogers is closer to Minneapolis than the one in Owatonna...and, the one in Rogers has a much better firearm selection. 0 -

Yes, it can be expensive. However, they will have what you are looking for (odds are high) if you are particular about your ammo.
I'm a Cabelas online "Bargain Basement" FIEND. I bought a pair of Columbia casual slacks with the cargo pockets for $20.00. I got a pair of nice black casual dress shoes for $20.00. I got a light winter coat in Advantage camo for around $20.00 as well.0
