Assault Rifle (can we quit using this term?)
I don't post often, but this morning I see a post in the ask the experts section with a question about a rifle for 3 gun competition titled "Assault rifle for 3 gun combat comp"
The guys asking a question and he's only got 1 registered post so I don't want to come down on him, but I question the term Assault. Too many times the media gets all wound up and anything that's got a magazine is automatically labeled Assault. Sheesh!
I just wish we a gun owners would ignore the popular media term and call them what they really are. Semi Automatic magazine fed rifles or pistols.
This isn't Hollywood Home of the "never have to reload fully automatic Rambo M60 machine gun".
The way I look at a Semi based on a military arm is it's likely to have been tested in the harshest of weather conditions and used by anything from a highly trained expert to some idiot in a third world country and it still functions despite all that abuse it may have been put thru. Thats what a Ar, Ak, Fal, G3, is The Timex of the gun world. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
I might as well add that as far as Bayonets go I believe 99 % of the people that buy them for a modern rifle (such as an ar15) only do so, to complete it as an accessory. But I shake my head at thinking someone out there going to turn a 1000 dollar plus investment, more if you add optics ( think eotec, aimpoints), into a spear. It's just not seriously happening in civilian real world.
As for the guy with the question, please don't chew him out. He's only asking an innocent question. This is not meant as a slap to him, it's just the misinformation of the "Media" that "Assaults" us daily is pretty darn silly.

My kids asked if my SKS was an assault rifle. They had heard the term from a teacher. I told them hell yes it is an assault rifle and to tell the teacher we have a bunch of them!
But you are right. Assault rifles in my opinion are military weapons capable of automatic fire.
An AR15 or SKS is not an assault rifle. It is insane to think the color of a gun or whether it has a pistol grip makes it an assualt rifle.
Of course if DWS was here I would be argueing the other way just to piss him off.0 -

If i see an AR15, or AK47, i think, awesome RIFLE you got there.
Assault automatically makes people think its for crime or war only.

So....would you be comfortable going before congress or on a national television debate and, knowing your opponents will try everything they can to hinder you and your argument, would you then be so willing to throw around the term "assault weapon?" Would you use such language as "I need my assault weapon to protect me and my family?"
If we progun people don't use every chance we find to make it just a little bit harder for the anti-gunners to disarm us, soon there will be no need to argue such questions. Because soon we have no firearms to even talk about.0 -
Would'nt you think an assault weapon is anything someone assaults someone with ? If I hit you with a baseball bat , does that make it an assault bat ? If I hit you with a rock , does that make it an assault rock ? If someone hits you over the head with a beer bottle , does that make it an assault beer bottle ?
IMHO I hate the term " Assault Rifle " because unless someone assaults you with one theres no such thing . I refer to ar-15's and ak's as military styl weapons [8)] that what they are .

You'll lose because you've conceded to fight the battle by their rules....
Fact is, it doesn't matter what you call them. You can call them "fluffy bunny" rifles and antis are still going to be after us. Changing the vernacular isn't going to help.
You will never convince anyone, even the most strident gun-rights supporters, that you absolutly need an AK-47 to defend your family, period. Why even try? This isn't a matter of defending one's family; its a matter of common defence.
If ever confronted by antis during debate, I simply repeat the second ammendment to the constitution. I'm tired of begging people to obey it.0 -
Yep. And for anyone who choses to purposely use the term "assault rifle" in an effort to get back at or to resist the anti-gun liberals, why don't you go it one better and start calling your firearm an "evil assault rifle?"
Then when debating anti-gun people and defending our right to own particular firearms, we pro-gunners can say we have a right to own our "evil assault rifles". That should get millions of undecided citizens on our side.

Lotta truth in what you say but you miss one important point. I have no illusions about trying to convert or convince any of the anti-gun people. They are not even actually the ones who will make the final decision about our gun rights.
The final decision will be made by the great middle of the road, undecided one way or the other, mass of citizens. Those are the ones whom I try to reach with my message.0 -
I've found the best way to get people on our side isn't through words, but actions
Invite people to go shooting. When I do, I always make sure to bring my AR-15. 9 times out of 10, thats what people like shooting. After taking my girlfriend out shooting, the AR is the ONLY thing she wants to shoot now.
Americans want to have fun. Shooting "assault rifles" is a hell of a lot of fun........an enjoyable day at the range with a new shooter is worth 100 successful debates.0 -

CALL them assault rifles. DEMAND a bayonet lug. DON'T give an inch. They are trying to spilt the gun owning community...you don't need a .50BMG rifle...you can't hunt with an AK...and some of the less zealous, the casual gun owner or hunter will believe that. But it's just divide and conquer.

"Battle Rifle" is the correct term/definition.

Well, the fat bald headed guy that is always on Weaponology and all the other history channel gun shows said that .30 caliber and up it's a battle rifle and anything under .30 caliber is an assault rifle. 0 -

To me it's a "Firearm", when I strap it on or over my shoulder it becomes a "Weapon" for defense. I do not like, or use the term "assualt rifle". 0 -

...yep, DWS would come in handy here. The term irks me to no end, hate it, don't use it...and correct anyone around me that does use the term.
I did not read every word that DWS wrote about the term...as I am too old; and would not have lived long enough to have read every word.

The word "storm" was a word incorporated into of the name of the Sturmguewhere battle rifle...and I guess the American translation of "storm"...was "assault".
Gotta admit, assault is easier to pronounce than Sturmguewhere...[;)]
