Assault Rifle (can we quit using this term?)
I don't post often, but this morning I see a post in the ask the experts section with a question about a rifle for 3 gun competition titled "Assault rifle for 3 gun combat comp"
The guys asking a question and he's only got 1 registered post so I don't want to come down on him, but I question the term Assault. Too many times the media gets all wound up and anything that's got a magazine is automatically labeled Assault. Sheesh!
I just wish we a gun owners would ignore the popular media term and call them what they really are. Semi Automatic magazine fed rifles or pistols.
This isn't Hollywood Home of the "never have to reload fully automatic Rambo M60 machine gun".
The way I look at a Semi based on a military arm is it's likely to have been tested in the harshest of weather conditions and used by anything from a highly trained expert to some idiot in a third world country and it still functions despite all that abuse it may have been put thru. Thats what a Ar, Ak, Fal, G3, is The Timex of the gun world. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
I might as well add that as far as Bayonets go I believe 99 % of the people that buy them for a modern rifle (such as an ar15) only do so, to complete it as an accessory. But I shake my head at thinking someone out there going to turn a 1000 dollar plus investment, more if you add optics ( think eotec, aimpoints), into a spear. It's just not seriously happening in civilian real world.
As for the guy with the question, please don't chew him out. He's only asking an innocent question. This is not meant as a slap to him, it's just the misinformation of the "Media" that "Assaults" us daily is pretty darn silly.

It is a very good point you have there with two exceptions. The defination making my AR-15 an "assault rifle" is the second defination for the word. Therefore I would claim that is not the final, undisputable defination of the word.
I would also focus on the word "modified". My AK-47 and AR-15 has NOT been "modified". To be able of haven been "modified" into semi-auto mode, the firearm would have had to first been manufactured as being able to fire "full-auto". No, instead, my AK-47 and my AR-15 were, from the very start, MANUFACTURED AS A SEMI-AUTO.
Otherwise I could have described a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic I owned, with an unusual 6 cylinder engine, as having been "modified" to have a 6 cylinder engine. Meaning that most such automobiles had a V-8 engine so since mine had a 6 cylinder, it must have been "modified" in order to be different from the cars with the V-8's.
However, that story would be a lie since my car, from the moment it left the production line, had a 6 cylinder engine.
Same thing with my AK & Ar. Neither of them were ever anything but a semi-auto so there was never a need or reason to "modify" either of them since they orginally were and still are only a "semi-auto".

I think we need to take the term Assault rifle back from the Antis.
Just like the "Vagina Monologs" are taking back a word that most women hate we need to fight back and strip the antis of their favorite term.
Myself I prefer EBR and I always use it when I talk about my AR just to make fun of the other side.

good point. Hey, what does EBR stand for?
When you are in a fight for your life (as we gun people are) you look for any and all advantages/mistakes/etc. that your opponent offers you. You look for mistakes because no matter how mistake free you and your actions might be, sometimes the outcome of the altercation will be decided solely upon which one of you is able to capitilize on the other's mistakes.
The anti-gun people having apparently successfully preverted the term "assault weapon" to now disparage our plain old semi-automatics as somehow being as deadly as the military full-autos. Evidence of this preversion is the dictionary defination that nows defines even semi-autos as being "assault rifles" simply because of the way they look. This is a dishonest way to use language. It is no different than publically labeling me a felon or criminal simply because I have extensive tattos on me, as many career criminals do (I don't have any tattos BTW).
My point is I believe we gun people are missing a good chance to bash our opponents because we make no public effort to expose them for lying about assault rifles.
Or maybe we gunners should force the issue by insisting the media and society call ALL firearms "assasult weapons". After all, if my semiauto Ar & AK can be called an "assault weapon" SIMPLY BECAUSE OF HOW IT LOOKS, then a model 1911 .45 and a Bretta model 92 9mm should surely be called an "assault pistol" because not only does it look EXACTLY like the military handguns, but it FUNCTIONS EXACTLY like one also.
In addition, if a semi-auto can be termed an assault rifle, then a revolver can also be called that same term. Reason? Because, like a semiauto, the revolver willl only fire one round for one trigger pull. and then, just as with a semi-auto, it will also ready the next round for firing. Plus, when all rounds are fired, you merely open the cylinder, quickly push the ejector rod and the revolver will AUTOMATICALLY eject the spent cases thereby making the revolver ready for new rounds. Or with the break top revolvers, you need merely open the action and all spent rounds are AUTOMATICALLY ejected.
Folks, the point I am trying to make is that the anti-gunners got very, very smart when they drove the stake of "assault rifle" into the heart of our military look-alike semi-auto rifles. We have to try and take back that term or they will have taken the high ground and will use it to outlaw all semi-auto rifles simply because of the way they look. Once they do that, then they will come for all your other "evil" guns.
