If you do not live in an "uber-expensive" area like the DC Metro area, you cannot possibly understand this issue.

Sounds like a lot of money to expose your children to communicable diseases, bad behavior, and institutionalization. Just think, in a few years, you can do the same for free by using the public schools.

Nope. You are right. Your situation is totally unique and none of us mere mortals could possibly understand it.

When my children were small, daycare would have cost me about $4,800 a year. I say "would have" because I didn't pay it, for the reasons outlined above by myself and others.

You must do as you think best, but just don't expect that those of us who made the sacrifices necessary to keep our kids out of institutionalized day care will sympathize with your plight.

Ok I'll answer both questions. Choices.
You choose to pay for childcare.
I (and my wife) choose to go to college, get married, have kids, stay married, etc. We choose not to have a 2nd income.
My wife used to teach 4th grade in Woodbridge (before we had kids). Her income (before taxes) would not have covered your yearly daycare bill. She stopped teaching because we moved to Okinawa. You might call Okinawa "uber-expensive."
She didn't go back to teaching because we have kids. THey're the priority, not money.
We feel that we are best qualified to raise our kids.
She'll go back to teaching when they are old enough for Kindergarten (K-5 or possibly K-4).
    It's all about choices.

I'm not condemning you or even judging you for your choices; merely pointing them out as choices.

As far as "raising" our children. I can assure you, the idiots that work at the daycare centers do anything BUT raise them. They are the only people that I would put below (career) McDonald's employees.

It is a miserable situation that cannot be solved by simply removing them and living on one income. But my wife and I have talked long and hard about her quitting and if we could get by. That may happen at some point. Possibly when the oldest starts school in 2 years. Around here, if your school does not have after and before care, you have to use daycare for that, and there are no part-time daycare providers. So you end up paying full fees for 2 hours a day.

Or maybe we'll just move out of this miserable area. The ONLY thing good about this area is the fact that jobs grow on trees. Our neighborhood now is even being invaded by Mexicans. You can always tell where they live due to the 10 pickup trucks parked all over the house/lawn/street. I am also seeing more and more business trucks parked overnight in the neighborhood (which is illegal and I am going to start filing complaints).

Well I do live in the D.C. Metro area and still get by on one income. I do not : drive a BMW, go to Hawaii every year, have a $100 a month cable bill, eat out at restaurants often, buy my kids $200 gym shoes, etc. It is a lifestyle choice, it is a priority choice, not a necessity.

So, you have observed that when there is a Gov't subsidy for those unfortunates that "need" help, your costs directly went up, and also, your taxes must have gone up to pay the administrators, checkers, and disbursers of the program to subsidize the needy, plus the actual subsidy, right?

Now, I wonder what would happen if there was an "education" subsidy, or a "Healthcare" subsidy, or a "transportation" subsidy, or an "heating oil" subsidy, Hmmmm?

  • CA sucks
    Holy crud!
Thats more expensive than my college education.
it was like $2,500 a quarter- so about $825 a month. Rent was $500 a month, and the other expenses brought it up to maybe $1,500 a month.

If you can afford that daycare, college for your kid should be a breeze

Reason # 356 that we chose to homeschool our 4 kids.

We don't go to Hawaii, but we still have time and money to spend with and on our kids.
    It's a choice.

In many ways, child care was the best thing we did for our kid. It costs a fortune, but he's great with other kids, not freaked out by new situations, he's got some real confidence (and not the phony "gee, we are all winners!" kind of confidence that comes from real "competition", if you can call it that.

Has he picked up a bad habit or a bug or two? Sure. It's going to happen anyway. The Good for us has outweighed the bad.

And it is a choice for us. No one else is "raising" our kid.

I am always wary about home schooling- I can't think of a good reason for anyone to do it. If the schools are so bad where you live, move or send the kids to private school. I think that kids have got to be out there with other kids, with other people, and have to be exposed to a wide variety of things in order to truly learn.

I have a case now with an attorney who bought a house in Detroit, in an area that before the 1967 Riots was as exclusive an area as you can get. The area now is mostly populated with people who lived there either before the riots, or who have to live in the city for one reason or another. You aren't sending your kids to the public school there. Most people there send the kids to a private school. Not this genius. He's going to home school his kids. As far as I can see, if he's dumb enough to pay through the A$$ for a house in a neighborhood where you can't even go to the grocery store, he surely is bright enough to be teaching his own kids.

My client lives next door, and keeps telling me that this guy is nuts. Now, I always take what my clients say with a grain of salt, but when I spoke to this guy, and he told me about the home schooling, I knew this was going to be a beaut...

I shouldn't think the cost has as much to do with the number of parents who receive a subsity from that government as much as the median income of the area.
Maybe he mom's should just stay home and not work, collect welfare....?

I'd be searching for a private sitter. There has to be a decent "stay at home" mom somewhere in your area that would like to make some extra cash. Or maybe a "just retired" school teacher drawing a full pension and would like making a little extra. Just a thought.

A good idea, but some are better than others. A certification just means you can pass a test, doesn't mean you like and can deal with children.
Just a suggestion, but I find that teachers have a knack, at least locally, pick the better home care providers.
Or grandparents. Lots of grandparents out there whose own children have moved away, don't get a chance to interact with their own grandchildren on a regular basis, just dying to spoil a kid.

Sounds like you need to get rid of the kid, or move.

1st- The Gov't (tax payers) give vouchers for school and day care to thousands who are on welfare...... Do they need a break while they are doing nothing anyways?
2nd- The Gov't (tax payers) picks up the bill in all of your listed catagories for those who make their existance on welfare. We pay for all medical needs, we pay for their education (free public school or vouchers to a private school), we transpot them to school (free school bus or the lovely taxi vouchers), and the utilities are paid for as well (section 8, and utility companies are permitted to charge a % each bill to make up for those who don't pay).

I realize it is a choice for daycare.. I never sent my kids anywhere other than school. But I understand the frustration when the shiftless are abled to exist with every benifit (none earned) and the working stiffs gets charged extra to make up for the lazy.
