Some cars are governed to only run a certain mph such as 100. Sometimes the chips remove the top-end governor[?]

Yep, performance tuning isn't the same anymore, and that may not be a bad thing. No more gapping points, synchronizing points in a dual point distributor, experimenting with timing, experimenting with distributor springs and weights to change the ignition curve! Now it is all on the chip.

Most cars do not use a "chip" anymore. They used to. But it is still called "chipping".

I bought an engine programmer for my Charger, supposed to add 20+ hp plus increase the top speed (governor), increase the shift points, make shifts firmer, etc, etc ,etc. It is a pretty good one and I can feel the difference. For $350 it is the cheapest mod you can do.

The programmer plugs into the cars diagnostics port and makes all its changes from there.

Yes ... and from what I've heard, no!

I've heard of a few horror stories where
    the handy dandy superdupper diagnostic
machines have failed to diagnose an
errant chip, here and there, and have
caused a lot of woe & stress.

... I suppose that's the small price for progress!

I've chipped, slammed, stroked, bored, flaired, frenched, shaved, channeled, tubbed, stretched, dubbed, juiced, chopped the top, lamboed the doors, flamed and scalloped my ride.
Ohh and I put a system in it too.

Bobbies [London police] take a Volvo 850 Turbo, and triple-chip it, boosting the stock 222hp to 315hp.

I'm not gonna do it to mine, but over on SweedSpeed.com, "mods", or modifications to us laymen, are a major source of comment and comparison.

This claim is so outrageous that it is not even worth calling BS on.

No. And I will not. My motor and drive train are warrantied for 100,000 miles. Specifically mentioned in the warranty is the fact that if the computer is modified in any way the warranty is void.

Besides the Duramax has more that enough power to suit me.

And if you think they can't tell, you will be sadly mistaken.

    what cars would that be?

some commercial trucks are governed, but i have never seen a car sold to the public governed at any speed

I LOT of cars are governed. I can't speak to the slow ones, but my 92 camaro was governed at 115mph, my 06 charger is (was) governed at 145mph - the superchips took care of that!

The Volvo claim is still BS. You can't gain almost 100hp by a chip alone. A chip with cam/headers/exhaust ok, but not just a chip. And I've never heard of "triple chipping". I'm guessing they mean the engine was chipped, the tranny and I don't know what else (My Superchips tuner takes care of all that at once).

These Programers are the reason Ford stopped using the 6.0 Power stroke. And is currently Sueing NAVSTAR.
It was a Bad design to begin with, and adding another 60hp just helped BLOW them up faster.

My Corvettes are not chipped. Pure stock but with factory rev-limiters.( RPM ). NO speed limiters on the Vettes.

No chip for me right now, but a definite in the next one.

Almost all the vehicles I have ever driven had speed limiters.

My S-10 cuts out at about 105 i think, speedo goes to 85 and gps said 105, but now is closer to 115 due to larger tires.

All subarus I have driven (all Legacy's I think) were 115.

I've tried Jet chips and they are worthless.

There are some programmers out their for fuel injected vehicles that do work, like superchips, diablo sport tuner etc. But no chips that actually work.

I have the Perfect Power SMT-6 tuner in my STS turbo charged Ram hemi, but I had to add larger injectors and a 2 BAR MAP sensor to get the fuel I need at WOT.

why screw with something that is designed to save you money? you go from point a to b and then you park it. its a car. its a tool. and there are speed limits.
    why the need for HP?

The 2003 DuraMax is limited to 110 mph. Don't ask how I know that.

My Son's Camaro is not limited, and again don't ask.

The Pantera was before chips, and in 4th with two gears to go was 130 mph.

Our 97 Lumina is governered for 105 mph with a rev limiter built in to the computer. Harley Davidson motorcyles also come with rev limiters which govern the rpm, mine WAS set at 5800.

Because you can chip it to save you even more money. You can tweak the 'puter to get better mpg also, not just hp. Been thinking of doing it to my '97 Powerstroke. Anybody got a brand they prefer for the Ford F-350 Powerstroke?
