My daughter (13) lost her cell phone, I replaced it and she lost that one within 5 days. She said she lost in Choir class and would get it the next day. No luck, I got busy with work and forgot about it for a while, I didnt stop the service and lo and behold some pissant found her phone and downloaded $428 worth of crap from the service. Now I have this huge bill and Verizon says they can take $75 off the bill but the rest is our responsibility, and that we should have canceled the phone as soon as we knew it was missing, well hell I know that and told them that, they were friendly enough but it doesnt help. Does anyone have any good ideas about what I can do to get this bill taken care of?

I might be wrong, but the amount of the bill is not all Verizon charges. Any down loads could be paid to a thrid party. The $75 credit maybe the amount owed to Verizon. The rest maybe collected by Verizon but paid to others who are not willing to reduce their portion of the bill. 0 -
BR here...yea I have an idea of how to take care of the bill...Pay it...you said you forgot to cancel it, or rather got busy with things...so therefore you owe it NO MATTER WHO USED IT....
Imagine if everyone used that excuse..."lost it but forgot to cancel it."...and they said dont worry bout the bill..0 -
Activate the password.
My phone has the option to turn on a password. I always have it turned on. If you input the wrong password 10 times in a row, the phone is deactivated.
I would highly recommend to activate a password if you have that option on your cell phones. It is very very very easy to lose a cell phone.

I agree your child should be held at least partly responsible for the charges on the phone if not recouped.
Keep calling the people called by the thief. Tell them that you will get the police involved if you don't get answers. When you find out who it is, give the thief's parents the option of paying the bill. If they get nasty, get the police involved or just sue them in small claims court.
That way, everyone learns a lesson.
As for your kid, give her an old phone without service. On most old phones, you can still call 911 even if no service is activated. Let her know it is just for emergencies until she can be more responsible.0 -

Youll get into trouble with that, but if you take a police officer into the office and wait for the hour to begin, then walk in he can search EVERY kid there until the phone is found.0 -

Ok, called several of the numbers on the bill, they all led back to one girl my daughter knows from school, we called her parents they found the phone and told us to send them the bill for her charges. The phone will be returned asap. Alls well that ends well. 0 -

i would back that up with calling the school, and involve the principle around here they would get involved, and help recover the cost or the girl would be expelled and arrested for the theft, and then have to pay it back anyway, her parents may have said "send me a bill", but you don't know if they pay the bills they have now, you already know their daughter is a thief, the old saying "apple doesn't fall far from the tree" comes to mind0 -

There are theives everywhere,unfortunately even in a 13 yr olds classroom.You are going to end up paying the bill since you are legally responsible.I would have your daughter making payments to you for 1/2 the balance,just to teach her some responsibility too.I would be getting the itemized bill and doing some detective work!and you are right theives are pissants!!! 0 -
