My daughter (13) lost her cell phone, I replaced it and she lost that one within 5 days. She said she lost in Choir class and would get it the next day. No luck, I got busy with work and forgot about it for a while, I didnt stop the service and lo and behold some pissant found her phone and downloaded $428 worth of crap from the service. Now I have this huge bill and Verizon says they can take $75 off the bill but the rest is our responsibility, and that we should have canceled the phone as soon as we knew it was missing, well hell I know that and told them that, they were friendly enough but it doesnt help. Does anyone have any good ideas about what I can do to get this bill taken care of?

Yeah, get a list of the kids and call every one of their parents.
More than likely it was a boy. We think that stuff is funny, however I dont steal, so its all good0 -

Well...call and tell them it's lost the minute you realize it's not with you. [:D] Sorry, but in my limited experience, there isn't much you can do except make sure your daughter becomes more responsible and doesn't lose phones.0 -
Here is a very good suggestion.
Tell your daughter that she will do without a cell phone, until the day that she can buy one with money she earned at her job, and she can also pay the monthly fees.0 -
Change churches,...as someone there is a thief.
Also fixed minutes if you feel she absolutely "must" have a cell phone.
Second time for you,........I would be finished.
Not responsible enough to carry one. IMHO0 -

I may be wrong, but I think he meant choir class at school.
At my son's middle school, they can have a cell phone with them, but they cannot get it out except in the case of "extreme emergency." Teacher sees it, it's there's for the rest of the year.0 -

You need to get her another phone...
cellphones are a security need in today's world, especially for a young teen. It's important to be able to keep track of her or for your daughter to keep in touch w/you.
Teach your daughter how to work the lock mode on the phone.
Tell her to lock it after every call, just in case it's lost again.
Not much that you can do to make her more responsible but in this case, it seems that it really was not her fault.
Also, get an itemized bill (like Jacob posted).
Look for numbers that were frequently called and then call them.
Maybe you can track down the theif.
Another suggestion is to ask Verizon if they can track the phone via it's GPS signal...may lead right to the crook.0 -
Have her buy a "Go-Phone" with her money and keep it charged with minutes that she pays for.

As an afterthought...the $428 is owed by your Daughter and she should pay it BEFORE you even consider any step regarding a replacement. She lost the phone, she pays the piper.
If she has no way of earning the money, have her sell her iPod and other stuff til it's paid for. I would not be inclined to provide her with anything valuable - smaller than a writing desk - til next Christmas.
If you replace it, you are teaching her a very poor lesson - for her growth and development as an adult.
These are examples of the ways I raised my kids, and they all turned out next-to-perfect adults.

Verizon will not give you a location where the phone is, because they don't know if you are going there to commit a violent act.
You should go to the school and see the principal and the choir teacher. Demand that they make a big deal of this in the class and demand that the thief(s) come forward on their own. Also, my experience (long and varied) tells me that most janitors are not to be trusted. Maybe she left the phone in the room and the janitor stole it. Hell, it might have been the teacher!
Also, all phones today have a password feature where you can't use the phone until you plug in a password. When you get the child a new phone, sit down with her and the two of you learn how to use it. Obviously your child is not as careful as she should be and does not understand the value of money. Punishing her because a thief stole her phone doesn't seem logical to me, but she must learn to be careful about her belongings and to learn the facts of life about people.0 -

get your bill look up the numbers they called, it was a waste to download that crap unless they know how to transfer it 0 -
If you had insurance on the phone it would of been taken care of. My kid lost 1 and when he finally told me the bill was up about $300 and the insurance I had through Cingular took care of it. 0 -
report it stolen to local law inforcement (it is missing and she did not download the files) this should be theft. file a report for the $400+$$$$. send a claim to phone co.ask for someone higher up on the food chain. 0 -

Wife called the phone and a girl answered, she hung up quick, we called Verizon and they wouldnt track the phone, goin to go tomorrow to file a police report, the phone was shut off. And got the number to the legal dept at Verizon. We looked up the bill and called some of the numbers on the call list, wife is talking to one of the mothers of a kid that goes to school with my daughter their number was called multiple times so we are already narrowing the list.
