I know it's just a show. I generally detest TV. I really don't watch anything else. I spent the last few years working through the first 5 seasons on DVD. This is the first time I've actually watched the broadcast. It sucks because I could have skipped the first four episodes. They go on sale tomorrow on DVD. 0 -

There are supposed to be four more suitcase nukes on U.S. soil--old Soviet stock. I think they said it was detonated in Valencia. I don't know much about Los Angeles so I don't know where that is.

It was in a warehouse on a city street in a residential neighborhood. CTU said anything within a quarter mile would be incinerated by it. The radiation would kill thousands more.
I have 2 questions. Did anyone else notice the guy that was putting it together say that it was the last one the russians had made in existance? So are we supposed to assume they managed to put together 4 more themselves or is it a hoax now?

Thats why I was yelling at the TV. I was yelling at Jack to stop staring at the dang thing. I didn't notice the guy who was saying that. Then again, it could be a wrong assumption. They said there were "Five Visitors". CTU assumed that meant 4 more nukes. The other for "Visitors" (code for "weapons") could be other types of devices (i.e. chemical/biological).0 -
Pretty sure he said they were the last models made by the Sovs; Also think that a 1 kiloton nuke would destroy at least a 500yd radius with at least a mile-wide LD50 zone.
Jack's eyes were glazed when he was staring at that nuke flash; must be some sort of CTU counter-nuke contact lenses!

For the record, the smallest nukes I'm aware of were the size of large trunks and weighed several hundred pounds (500+). I believe I read that making an actual suitcase nuke was either A) impossible not worth it, or C) to expensive and not worth it.0 -
Aspen: Sorry to burst your bubble but I was in a nuclear weapons squad in the Army Combat Engineers in 1962-4 and when I got out they were down to one that one man could carry in a back-pack, weighed like 80# with a 1/2 KT yield. So imagine the progress in 40 yrs. At the time I was young, naive and dumb because we were in a no nuke test agreement and I was POed cuz we couldn't do more than just trainin all the time. Had we blown any I prolly wouldn't be here now, because I'm sure we would have walked around ground zero for tests and such with ineffective protection. 0 -

They tried to detonate a nuke in LA somewhere around season 3 or 4. Jack Bauer and the CTU guys found it. Jack got in a Cessna and was flying out into the desert into an area surrounded by hills and mountains to help contain the blast. His supervisor snuck onto the plane. He was dying from radiation poisoning already. He had a pilot's license. He took over the controls and kicked Jack out of the plane with a parachute. The bomb detonated in a relatively safe place out in the middle of nowhere.
So...yes. A nuke was detonated in a previous season but it was found in time and was flown out to a "safe zone" because they couldn't stop the timed detonation in time to prevent it from detonating in LA. It wasn't a suitcase bomb.0 -

The SADM (Special Atomic Demolition Munition). Developed during the 1960s for eventual use by the SEALs, they used a scaled-up (although not by much) Davy Crockett W54 warhead. It had a selectable yield of between .1-kt and 1 -kt, although the specific SADM variant was never tested. 300 were produced, none of them were actually issued to units, and they took up space in the arsenal until 1989 when they were all accounted for and demilled at Pantex in Texas.
Most importantly, it was (and still is) firmly believed that the W84 on the Davy Crockett was the smallest any nuke could ever get. They skimped on plutonium so much in order to save weight that the amount of plutonium, even when explosively compressed, was about 1 microgram above the minimum level for a chain reaction to take place. To go any smaller would have resulted in a guaranteed fizzle.
The rest of the weight difference between the W84 on the Crockett and the mod-W84 on the SADM was shielding, flotation aids, and a fail-safe time detonation apparatus.
Total weight: about 163 lbs.0 -

The W54 was the smallest we ever made. The bare warhead only weighed about 51-lbs. But of course, you had to strap on the shielding, and the warhead body, and by the time you were done it weighed 76-lbs. And it still had a yield of only 10-tons. Not kilotons, tons.
Plus you have to consider that they saved all kinds of weight by not having to install any bells and whistles, like a time-detonator w/failsafe controls, flotation aids, etc. That's one of the (many) reasons why the (vaguely) man-portable SADM, with it's modified W84, weighed so much more. Even if you somehow got your hands on a W84, you'd have no way to detonate it. Remember, it was built from the ground up as a recoil-less rifle round.
Eventually, the conclusion was come to, both in the US and USSR, that the whole "suitcase nuke" concept was a money pit. If you really needed to blow something up in a clandestine manner, you were better off using an actual suitcase filled with C4. If that didn't cut it, use a truck bomb. 10-tons of TNT in the back of a truck is a lot cheaper than a multi-million dollar nuclear warhead the size of a footlocker, and just as effective.0 -
