The old...it's better to have one and not need it than need it and not have it. With crime the way it is nowadays I cannot see myslef not carrying. Not to mention the fact that it is your constitutional right to carry but that's a whole nother can of worms.

that's kind of weird, maybe it's just a different area or the people i choose to have any communication with, but i've been asked only "when will you get CCW" and "I know this guys you can take a class from" and "let's go shooting"... your profile says your in Gunnison -- was infected like denver?

Just say this to the non believer:

"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

    I have no such problem.

Two physicians were murdered in my town last week. I've been threatened myself a few times.

I'm the one usually asking questions: What? What are you waiting for? How come you dont carry? Would you like to see my trusted companion?

Yes I live in gunnison, No not yet been infected but, I work and spend alot of outdoor time in Crested Butte which has been infected. the stick fairies as you know are mostly lefties, dims, what ever. I want to be able to asker them in a reasoably educated tone. if you know what i mean, they don't get that it is always better to have one and not need one. Nor do they admit that it is a Constitutional right to own or carry one.

I think if i have a well though out and some what educated responce, that that in turn will get to think about it themselve's, rather than blowing me off as gun toating crazy.

I have only been asked once. My response was, 'With the world the way it is, today, a better question is: Why DON'T you carry one?"

+1 Allen! I agree [^] For the most part, I don't advertise and thereby have no need to explain to anyone. Letting everyone know that you are carrying is a good way to get beaten, or killed and robbed of your weapon. People that advertise that they are carrying are looking for trouble. [xx(]

    * As far as concealed carry being your "constitutional right," I'm afraid you need to read the Constitution a little more carefully goldeneagle76. It isn't there and it is not your right to carry a concealed weapon without a permit, or license issued by the governing power (be it Sheriff's Department, Police Department, or governmental entity). [;)]

I try not to advertise. most of the people that refer to are personal aquantences. ie, people I work with, hang out with, so I have gotten to know them quite well. And sooner or later the it comes up or in some cases peaks out and that is ussually when it comes up. and I must answer this question. I'd like to be able to better state my point of view on this matter.

    thanks

I say the same reason people have fire extinguishers in their homes... they don't plan on having a fire but it's nice to have should the need arise.

"the right to BEAR arms". what's the difference between carrying a pistol on a belt, or carrying one concealed? they're both bearing arms. so, you have the right to BEAR arms... however you choose to do it.

regarding licenses and permits, I don't see how that ISN'T considered an infringement, and therefore licensure should not be permissable under the constitution.

you have the right to free speech, don't you? requiring a license to do so would be unimaginable. yet the 1st amendment doesn't even say "shall not be infringed", the 2nd DOES go so far as to explicitly state "shall not be infringed". they must have thought it was important to make that clear.

Many people interpret the Constitution to their best advantage, or in their best interest, regardless of how the courts interpret and enforce it. Regretfully, concealed carry is not covered in the Constitution/Bill of Rights. Again, this thread was directed at concealed carry and whether people like it or not, a license/permit is required. [;)]shouldn't be.

you're adding onto the topic. original topic in green, your add-on in red. and I disagree with it.

It's futile, give it up, they don't think, period. Not "they don't think like we do" but they don't think. It's impossible to have an educated intelligent discussion with someone who only uses their emotions. Kind of like having a religious discussion with a muslim.

On a more practical side, I would suggest picking up "More guns, less crime" by John Lott to get an idea of numbers you could throw around; on a Constitutional Right issue I normally bring up Jefferson and his views. But again, most of the time they just get pissed off and say I probably enjoy clubbing baby seals (whatever the heck that means since I am too old for clubs and never been into the whole thing).

Sorry I can't be much help, I've lived in CA for 10+ years, actively shooting for the last 6 or 7 and always being gun ownership advocate, I haven't yet met anyone who was easily converted. One nut, and I think I wrote about it here, said that criminals feel a need to carry firearms while robbing a house, for instance, because they might need to protect themselves from armed homeowners. Now, how do you have a reasonable discussion with someone who's either retarded, is an idiot or just outright crazy?[:)]

I carry it because it can't walk on it's own. It's concealed because it's shy.

Actually I tell no one I have a CCW. My little secret.

    Semper Paratus. Always prepared.

Ask them if they would choose to protect themselves with a gun if they knew someone was coming after them.

Then point out that one can never know when such protection might be needed, hence you choose to carry.

The question I always get is "Why would you carry a gun here? - where here is a church, social club, or perhaps the hospital. My response is simply, "I carry everywhere." [except the courthouse and the airport]

This is the answer I gave the nurse at my doctor's office, when she asked that question after I laid my carry piece on the counter preparatory to being examined:

She (new and unaware that I am a cop) asked, "WHY do you carry a GUN?"

I answered, very honestly, "Because I might want to shoot somebody."

That is the only reason that I carry a gun, because a situation might come up where I would want to shoot somebody. It would be a shame to be where someone needed shooting and not be able to oblige.

My thinking is that having a concealed carry permit should mean just that, that as few people as possible should know that you have a gun on you. Only your most trusted companions should know about it, and it should remain hidden until it needs to be used. As far as what I tell people, I have not had anyone ask why I carry, because nobody but my parents know that I do, and that is how I like it. Should somebody ask me though, I would have to say that I would respond with something like, "Why would you not carry a gun, with the world the way it is?" And it should be carried everywhere possible, because the least likely place for you to need a gun is very likely a place where something will happen, such as those mentioned above.

"For the same reason you have insurance on your car or house, but rather than be reactive to a situation, I can also use it to proactively deter a situation. If need be I may have to use it to stop aggression or neutralize a direct threat upon my life or someone elses. After all who else is going to protect me, the police? Police are only reactive, they only respond to crime, they don't walk around protecting me or anyone else as personal body guards. If I were an uber wealthy man and could afford a small army of personal body guards, then I wouldn't need to carry a gun. Are you going to pay for me a body guard? No... Hey, why don't you carry a gun? Haven't you ever been afraid? What are you going to do when you need to shoot someone and you don't have a gun? Are you just going to be a victim?"

    Harsh reality indeed.

Jumped through many hoops for the "privilege" to carry.

    Don't make no laws either.

For example, I had to prove to the State that I owed no back child support payments in order to be granted a CCW permit.

    What about my constitutional rights?
