It sounds like you were miserable and the place sucked so look at it as a gift because without them moving your butt out of there you might well have stayed another five years.
probably right... another year or two.

    Sorry BUSCH.
Losing a job sucks. For each door that closes, another door opens. Keep us posted on your doors.
    will do.

sounds like you should have been looking for a job 4 years and 5 months ago.
that was the plan... but I got sidetracked.

You have a BS in chemistry and only make $12.50 an hour? What state are you in?missouri. before that, texas. before that, nebraska. it's not the location. I was looking for jobs in colorado, a recruiter was telling me chem's would be very happy to make 13.50. the first job I got out of college in nebraska, for $6.50, I met an old russian lady who told me I should be happy with that, the first job she got was for $4.50 an hour. I looked in the paper and was seeing jobs for MS in chem, for $10.00. that's why I moved to texas, lots more jobs but not better paying. so I moved here to St. L thinking I could work for monsanto or a few other pharmaceutical co's, but no!
-monsanto had a hiring freeze, and after I found out more about the co. I didn't want to work for them anyways
    -solutia went belly up
-Steris, the weirdo interviewing me was holding his head up with his hand, and using it to wave bye-bye and flipping me off...! weirdo! old fart named george walker. I can't work for that. (they didn't hire me anyways) 9.50/hr
-KV pharmaceuticals, on the 2nd interview they all got some kind of mental problems, the boss guy I'd be working for was abusive and almost yelling already. the didn't hire me anyways. others I've talked to tell me u can lose that job as easy as u can get it, and it's a rotten place to work. 32K/yr
-ChemIR, great things to do there, interviewed once, no; interviewed again, no; then they called me up and want me to come in and give a 20 minute presentation on how I've solved problems analyzing pharmaceutical samples... no guarantee you're going to get a job though! (are u crazy?? takes work to do a presentation) I didn't have problems, so I didn't have anything to present. never heard from again. 13.50/hr

Manlift...guy found bound and shot on the tracks behind the place...sounds like you were working at the old Pillbury mill on Shreve Avenue off 70. What a crap hole.
They had both and it stinks in there, but I thought it closed a few years ago.
Place sounds like a bunch of monkeys in a www.careerbuilder.com commercial.
it was bought by ADM. you used to work there too??

Buschmaster seriously look into the oilfield for work. They work you hard, but most of the companys take care of their people. I've never heard the horror stories some folks talk about on here.
I could use the cash. what about losing fingers and stuff?

try sending a resume to monsanto in st. louis. or hospitals in lab dept
done that a few times. plus, seriously, I don't like how they're trying to take over everything with their GM crops stuff. I don't want to be a part of that.

Isn't there a some kind of law that says a company has a hire a Temp employee full time w/benefits after X amount of time? nope I've never heard of anyone being a Temp at the same place for 4 years.
The reason he only got $12.50 an hour is likely because the Temp Service got 1/3 of his actual wages. IMO if you stayed 4 years thru the BS you describe, as a Temp for only 2/3 your value wages w/no benefits, you're a glutton for punishment. they would not give me a raise. been asking them for the last 3 years to give me a raise. the yoyos they hired last year, right off the bat they're making $13.50 or better, and they s-u-c-k compared to me.

That sucks - especially at this time of year. You are better off without it. Your co-worker should be the biggest eye opener. Work there day in and day out waiting for retirement, then have a heart attack.
I sure would be better off without that job!
You spend most of your waking hours at your job, if you do not enjoy it, then you are spending most of your life in misery.
    got that right
Good luck, I am sure you will bounce back!
my "qualifications" look worse now than before I started. unless I want to work as a lab tech in a food plant. (barf)

Don't know whether to say sorry or congrats!! Would seem that "Congrats" is the best from imfo offered!
    yup...

Are you SURE there's no such law? If companies could hire long term Temps at cut rate wages w/no benies, why would any of them ever hire full time? As I recall they have to hire or fire @ 6 months.
We had driver @ work from a Temp service. Nice guy that came to work everyday and had worked for the service several years. But never at one location for very long.
And there was a reason. He just couldn't get "up to speed". After 6 months he was still performing as if he'd only been there for a few days. He wanted the full time job and we needed a full time driver. And we tried to give him every opportuity to work into the job. But after 6 months we HAD to either hire him or let him go. We let him go.

dude sorry about the "poke me sign" i thought you would have changed coats by now[:)]

seriously i wish you well, take a break, and start hitting the pavement, i would hit earth city, and definitely hit AB believe it or not they have a very big lab, and the pay is unfreaken real, i would take the lowest job they offer because it is still one of the best places in the world to work for

and for those that question 12.50 hr for someone that has a bs in anything go to stl classifieds, you see it everyday , "bs required 4 yrs exp" 9 bucks a hr etc. it's disgusting

Yeah, but I don't like saying that name. All Dumb Motherf%^@W%'s.
That place did meet your description. I heard a story about a "local youth" being found shot on the tracks. It is in a bad part of town. and it would suck to work there.

Those manlifts are "fun". They explain how DOnkey Kong was the inspiration. I hate the morons that ride them to the top. Kick out the limit switch and walk down the stairs only to have someone else go up there.

Fort Worth elevator for All the Devils Men had one of thise manifts. When I got there, they said don't shut it off amd you might want ti think twice about riding it in a thunderstorm. The brake doesn;t work

Another plant mgr. for Another Damn Mess, we called him "Dick-With Ears" or "DWE" was giving a tour to a bunch of Japs. They all jumped on the manlift going down, one right after another. The belt started to slip and they went down much faster than they should. Almost a controlled free-fall. They all jumped off on the ground floor. DWE played to off like it was normal. That company has earned the name Another Dead Man.

Sorry for your loss. Losing a job sucks. Job inerviews are an ancient form of torture kind of like dating.

I say think bigger. Budweiser. They hire people with degrees in chemistry but do not recruit out of college. They prefer experience.

    Good luck.

Did someone hold a gun to your head and MAKE you take that job? You knew how much you would be making, right? Now for the big one. WHO held a gun on you and made you stay there? Be honest with your self. Also no company will let a real good employee go. Oh I know. Every body who loses their job blames it on someone else. Human nature. Some times though a person has to take a cold hard look at them selves.

Doesn't sound like much of a love affair to me!

Try URS Corp. (on the EG&G side). Lots of military and defense opportunities. URS will have opportunities as well, on the environmental side as well as civil engineering.

Good advice, FCD. They are a well respected and growing business. I have worked for them (EG&G/LSI) for 6+ years. Good pay and benefits, and they are almost EVERYWHERE!

buschmaster, Here's a link to their website. Hope it helps.

it was the HR guy's idea to get rid of me. my boss there called me up at home and told me it was a rotten thing to do. so, you, me, and my boss are equally as clueless. now what. ??

People don't lose fingers often in the oilfield or get hurt much. The only time I saw a guy lose a finger out there was because of his own stupidity. He tried to correct the grab of a set of tongs while they were running pipe. Tongs will win everytime.

Have you considered a career change? It sounds like you hated your last job and don't like the jobs you might get much better. What would you like to do?

A career change might sound like the waste of a perfectly good bachelors degree, but you don't want to be miserable for the rest of your life.

Spoken like a true employer. I don't know what in this turd stinks more; the peanuts or the corn. People hold on to crappy jobs because they and those depending on them need to eat; if that isn't a gun to the head, nothing is. And THAT is human nature. And companies do let good people go all the time, either because of favoritism or upon the urging of some asshat with an axe to grind. Sure, bad people get fired, too. But the presumption of your post speaks volumes.

Career changes suck. I entered a new career once. The same crony asshat's BM was referring to worked there. Took about 5 years before the last one was fired. The place is better now and those that have ambition and desire are encouraged rather than seen as a threat. Yes, it is possible to have to work with such monkeys.

Starting a new career is not easy. Breaking a glass ceiling is rather difficult.

Maybe the warden's neighbor's daughter needs a job.

DOn't forget Proctor and Gamble and COntinental Bakeries.

    Amen DWS.

It sucks to hold on to crappy job too long because you have that new house payment, a wife, children, or such. Plus downturns in the economy can make it more important to hang on to that crap job.

One time I mentioned to a manager that over half the employees are currently seeking new jobs. I suggested that maybe we're doing something wrong and perhaps we should do a self examination. He disagreed.

They have been looking for some Environmental folks to work for the military on Guam...short handed!

They are also looking for people to write environmental impact studies of the increasing military build up....alot of qualified people they asked refused to do it and lie in the reports.

If you want money.....they'll pay to fly you here AND move all your stuff here. NO BS.

Go to USAjobs.gov and apply for USAF and NAVY civilian jobs on Guam.

    unless you hate money.

Stateside hired civilians can stay in military housing AND have their kids go to the DODEA schools instead of the messed up Guam local schools.

I've been thinking I need to go back and get a degree in some kind of engineering, maybe nuclear or hydroelectric power. I was told by 2 different recruiters, years ago, if I were to become an engineer "your life would change" (unquote) no more problems finding a good job.

Yeah DWS. I've heard that old song before. Look at the picture of his front room. What does that say to you. Unless he has only lived there a week it screams lazy to me.
