lost my job today! ho ho ho. haha. heh. ecch.
yep, lost my job today. the temporary employment agency called me up and said don't bother going to work tonight, you got laid off.
well. I had been working there 4-1/2 years as a (piddling) lab tech, 7 days a week for the first 3 years, on the night shift no less. I put in more overtime than anybody in the history of the temp agency, 800+ hours of overtime a year, for 3 years in a row. I do anything for 1 year and I'm going to be damn good at it. I do anything for 2 years and I'm a frikkin' pro. I been there 4.5 years. I could spin that place around on my little finger.
and I did everything and anything for them. they wanted me to work, I was there. they wanted me off, ok no problem. this is forkin ridiculous. at one time there was only me and the boss to do the work of 4 people, we worked 12 hour shifts each (7 days a week) cuz the place runs 24 hours a day. that was because Kenny had a heart attack. lemme tell you about Kenny.
Kenny was an old man, about to retire. another lab tech. a 65 year old lab tech. he'd been there at least 13 years. he was counting the days off until he was going to retire from that place. when I first started working there, he was on 1634 days until retirement. he was disgusted with that place. it used to be (large food manufacturer) until SOMEONE ELSE bought it out, he said now all they put out is crap. also he was disgusted with his whole career: he got a BS in chemistry (like I do) in 1970. he worked as a janitor to put himself through school to become a CHEMIST. lots of money, right? (haaaahahahaha not). he said he made more money as a janitor, and look where he ended up. a lab tech. he would tell me he would rather have been a wildlife photographer.... and shake his head. this is how he ended up. he was disgusted.
anyways, about 400 days left, he had a heart attack. they had to put a stent in his artery. me and the boss had to cover for him for a few weeks until he could come back to work. 12 hour shifts to cover 24 hours. so he came back, and really wasn't looking well. he made it to the last day and retired. I don't know how long he's going to last. that's how his dreams ended.
so they hired some other [mud]heads that are so stupid. they been working there for a year now and, one of them still doesn't know how to work the phone she's so damn stupid (and she's a [w]itch to boot), one is so slow everybody else in the plant can't stand him cuz he's holding them up, and the other is such a ^^$*$ [w]itch they call her Devila (bosnian for Devil).
the idiots they hire are so bad it makes me feel bad even being in the same (low skill) job as they got, but they lay ME off?!?!?!?! what the helll??!?! far as I know the idiots didn't get laid off. and I been working there 4 times as longer, do the job 5 times better, and can LITERALLY do the work of any 2 of them put together when we get swamped.
AND that place is so disgusting when I first started working there I thought I would shoot myself if I was there longer than 6 months. the whole place smells like a sweaty foot. the cafeteria smells like a fish aquarium. we used to be able to smoke in the cafeteria, but then they made us go outside to a riduculous little picnic table with some scrap metal over it and called it a "smoking area". why don't you try going out there 4 times a night, in the middle of the night, in winter, when it's 15 degrees out. or 40 degrees and sleeting. that place SUCKED. there were snitches. there were psychos. one asshat I was an inch away from beating up kept sneaking up on me in the lab and poking me in the back, he thought it was funny. other people he would sneak up on and watch them from around the corner until they turned around and saw him. everybody hated that freak.
and they would all get together to piss you off if they thought it amusing. after I told that asshat (they all hate) to quit poking me in the back, a few weeks later someone else walked by and poked me in the back. I said hey don't do that. next week someone else did it. next week someone else did it. and again. and again. until I told the next person that poked me in the back that I didn't like it because when younger, I had been trained by my dad to grab such people, throw them on the ground and stomp their face. (I was, really, and I can do that faster than you can blink without any warning) so they quit. except for the ones that really wanted to piss me off, they started up again after a while. god damn did that grate on my nerves.
these other guys that wanted to piss me off waited until I was on the manlift, and shut it off between floors. a manlift is like a conveyor belt for people, it goes between floors and it's cheaper than an elevator. some of them went from a basement a few floors underground, all the way up to 8 floors up, and these were big floors. if you go all the way to the top and look down, you're looking at about 15 regular stories to the bottom.... and you're standing on a platform the size of a milk crate, bolted to a rubber belt. so they stopped it, they figured I would be stuck because I'd have to jump 10 feet to the nearest floor, and they wasn't going to come around for another half hour or so. but I jumped off anyways. they could have got in DEEP DEEP ca-ca for doing that, but they didn't. such is the benefits of senority in a union.
that place was in such a run down part of town, they told me there was a guy found bound and gagged and shot, on the railroad tracks, just around the corner. they told me once in a while there were bums that would wander through the buildings and mooch for food, a buck or a cigarette. they stole the fax machine. they broke into the food machine. they cut someone with a knife. I never saw one, but the stories are there. they also told me that one time 2 guys got in a fight before getting out the front door and 1 of them got beat to death.
I had to chain my steering wheel to the brake pedal to keep it from getting stolen. numerous cars have been stolen out of the parking lot, even in broad daylight. someone snatched the T-tops off a guy's car and went down the street with them in broad daylight. supervisors were afraid about the new "smoking area" in the parking lot, because they thought come summer, someone was going to get seriously hurt by a thug.
not only that, car theives would steal cars and leave them in the parking lot to get them later! one time, we unknowingly gave some thieves a jump start before the real owners showed up to get their car.
and the snitches, backstabbing, and feuds that would go on. everybody was afraid to say anything The Management might not like because of snitches. ther were people who hated that place so bad, they literally would take the other interstate so they didn't have to look at that place when they drive by.
when I first started working there, I was told I would find out that it was like prison. it sure was. they called the head cheese "the warden". and he sure did act like it. no surprise, since that place SUCKED so bad they had problems finding employees, they had to hire work release from prison and Bosnians (because they didn't speak english and couldn't get a job elsewhere).
the management was a bunch of rotten, backstabbing, corn-holing gaggle of cronies, except for the safety guy. so they had to get rid of him. they told him he dind't have time to do some safety training, go do (something else) instead. so later on they fired him becasue he didn't do that safety training. guess who took his place? the warden's neigbor. and you know it, he was just as much a crony as the rest of them. so much he wanted to make me puke.
so, wth?? I had a BS in CHEMISTRY for chrissakes. I never could find a job much better than this. now I've been working here for 4-1/2 horrid putrid wretched years, and I definitely won't get anything better cuz once you get a job in "a field", so I've now been told, you're stuck. my base salary was 12.50 $/hr. what a froking joke. I'm now 40 years old, instead of 35 (which was still laughable) and what the FFFFF kind of job am I going to get next?? maybe move on up to dishwasher somewhere?? plus, it won't be until at least a month before anybody starts hiring again. so I'm guaranteed to go a month without $$$ before I can even put in an application somewhere.
this FFFFF sucks. I hated them. now I really hate them. I hated the little-yappy-dog-like fools in the temp agency that got me there iin the first place. (btw, they lied to me, they told me if I put in some time there I could get a legitimate laboratory job somewhere else) I know I'm going to hate the dozens of asshats that turn me down for a job because "I'm not qualified". no poop, how am I ever going to be "qualified", asshat. I know I'm going to hate the morons I get to work with in the next low-paying, low-skill, dead end job.
I FFF hate everybody involved in the whole cluster-forking, conniving, soul-sucking, life-destroying mess they call "scientific jobs".
of course, I like my friends here at Gum Broker.

Good luck.no... I ate it.
maybe I should do a then-and-now picture.0 -
If you hated that bad, you should be shouting and dancing in the streets because they didn't call you back! Where are you located? LOTS of big chemical plants around here because of our port facilities and access on the Ohio, TN, and Mississippi Rivers. They are always hiring chemists. 0 -
Sorry you lost your job, but it may be a good thing. Sounds like it wasn't a good job to begin with. I believe you will find somethig better. Remember, HR people are experts at body language. Use that body language to show belief in yourself and they will read it that way.
I know you don't believe in it, and I respect your beliefs, but I'm saying a prayer that this leads to a better job and a better life for you and your family.
Good luck and God bless. You deserve better!

4 years as a temp, wow! I got stuck for a year and a 1/2. Go apply for unemployment. Stick em with the bill. 0 -
Why don't you tell us how you really feel. don't hold anything back. 0 -
So now you have the chance to better yourself. If this wouldn't have
happened you would still be there for however long and be miserable
with your job. Maybe this is what you needed to get you to a better
job with better pay and a better work environment. I wish you good
luck and hope you get the chance. Besides where you were working
sounded like you would eventually end kickin' some azz and gittin'
into a mess of trouble.0 -
Corporations being bought out by foreign investors and demanding a profit no matter what..........Americans pay the price.
Sorry to hear it. Everyone in my family has gone thru what you've gone thru.
I am waiting for my notice of losing this job. Supposed to hear this month when they plan on selling us out.
My grandmother lost her job making shoes at a factory in the early 80's. My mom lost her job at a factory in the 90's...both factories went to China.
This one is funny as heck....my dad worked for over 30 years for a company....that was bought out by foreignors.....they robbed the people of their retirements with the buyout and he was supposed to work until he died I guess........
He just got busted for a DUI and will lose his license for a year. Has to quit and will be homebound for 1 year in the Great State of Pennsylvania. He's 60....entire family moved away to get jobs so he's on his own.
Don't have a clue how he's going to get food. He can't drive. Guess he could always get a horse to get to town.
I have a slight feeling he might go postal...what's he got to lose? Can't work to even make money to pay his taxes on his house or the powerbill.

If you have a Chem degree then you need to be looking into oil. One of my close bud's sister graduated, worked in a college lab for 3 years barely making ends meat. She got a job with chevron making 80G working 12 days on 12 days off in the gulf of Mexico.
One of my wife's best friends has her BS in Chem, she is working in a P & G faculty for some other company testing products. The girl is smart, as smart as my wife, she had to get a second job at walmart to pay her student loans. [xx(]0 -

There are labs around here and chemical plants always looking for
lab rats. There are also private labs that tests for quality control
of products for the plants. Caleb Brett is one of them My son worked
for them for awhile. BASF is a big plant down here also. Good luck0 -
Hang in there Buschmaster. Things will turn around for you and I bet you'll get an even better job. 0 -
Sounds like not a job you were very content with to begin with, but the timing truly s*cks!!!
Been there. Happens to the best of us. Success is the best revenge.0 -
Now you have edumacation and experience. Go do great things. 0 -
You knew it was temporary anyway. Don 0 -
I'm very sorry to hear that you got laid off of your job, especially at this time of year. Hopefully a better one awaits you in the near future. 0 -
yeh.. well.. I been stuck with this job for so long, because I had too much stuff to do at home first, I felt like I had a ton of bricks on me. last few months I've been working at it day & night, taking out the trash in my life, lightening the load, I was working so hard at it I got a LIST of stuff to do every day, & update it every night, now I can go at it full blast. especially over the xmas holidays. it's like hacksawing off a 100 lb ball chained to my leg.
like, look at my front room.
oh yeah it's good to not have to go back to that job, but I'm afraid of running out of $$$ and landing another crappy job. I mean, that's what got me that one in the first place, I was desperate for a job.
as long as it all turns out ok, this would be fantastic. but it never has turned out ok.0 -
It sounds like you were miserable and the place sucked so look at it as a gift because without them moving your butt out of there you might well have stayed another five years. 0 -
Sorry BUSCH.
Losing a job sucks. For each door that closes, another door opens. Keep us posted on your doors.0 -
Create a new line of automotive paint that is ethanol based.
$2 a gallon for ethanol (E-85)......heck of a lot cheaper than Dupont's Enamel Reducer.
Big $$$$ if you could start up a paint company of your own. Could drive up demand so much they'd quit using it for fuel in cars tho.....0 -

Funny you should mention that. I knew a chemist that worked at the lead smelter until they laid us off (went non-union. He quickly got a job at a paint factory, and been there every since (20yrs).0 -
sounds like you should have been looking for a job 4 years and 5 months ago. 0 -
You have a BS in chemistry and only make $12.50 an hour? What state are you in? 0 -
Manlift...guy found bound and shot on the tracks behind the place...sounds like you were working at the old Pillbury mill on Shreve Avenue off 70. What a crap hole.
They had both and it stinks in there, but I thought it closed a few years ago.
Place sounds like a bunch of monkeys in a www.careerbuilder.com commercial.0 -
Buschmaster seriously look into the oilfield for work. They work you hard, but most of the companys take care of their people. I've never heard the horror stories some folks talk about on here.
EDIT: By the way I worked for a temp company when I was in between jobs. That lasted 1 day! They suck get on with a good company I'm sure you can do it. Good luck.0 -

try sending a resume to monsanto in st. louis. or hospitals in lab dept[?] 0 -
Isn't there a some kind of law that says a company has a hire a Temp employee full time w/benefits after X amount of time? I've never heard of anyone being a Temp at the same place for 4 years.
The reason he only got $12.50 an hour is likely because the Temp Service got 1/3 of his actual wages. IMO if you stayed 4 years thru the BS you describe, as a Temp for only 2/3 your value wages w/no benefits, you're a glutton for punishment.
The timing for this is unfortunant, but it's PAST time to move on from that situation.0 -
That sucks - especially at this time of year. You are better off without it. Your co-worker should be the biggest eye opener. Work there day in and day out waiting for retirement, then have a heart attack.
You spend most of your waking hours at your job, if you do not enjoy it, then you are spending most of your life in misery.
Good luck, I am sure you will bounce back!0
