Didn't he get the Navy Cross? Can't remember. Anyway, I digress....

Down in the delta, I remember a Navy sniper. Seemed rather facinated with himself. Come to find out he broke cover to investigate a shot he made one night, and got grenaded. Buzzword around the compound was that he was not supposed to have advanced into the kill area. And that he made a stupid mistake. And paid for it.

Again, C/H retreived the rifle because he felt he needed proof the menace to the area, caused by an experienced sniper, sent from Hanoi was eliminated. The NVA sniper caused much concern to the US command structure. Patrols were diverted/curtailed. There was a lot of consternation over this NVA sniper. Sanctioning of breaking cover to get "proof"? Well lets just say it's not encouraged.

Hathcock would not have survived, had he had the habit of breaking cover to investigate his kills. Joe

    tccox,
Geeez, give the man a break. He's dead.[xx(] This is starting to border on obsession. Declare a mental health day and focus on something good, like Hillary Clinton making a fool of herself again.[:D]

It sure sounds like an exaggerrated legend to me, but who knows. We weren't there. If it is made up it was because he was so good that people actually believed he would have been able to do that. So in any case, it points to his skill.

    Besides....

MythBusters proved you can't shoot through a riflescope [:D]

As soon as either of the twits on MB wins the Wimbledon Cup (which Hathcock did) I'll start to believe some of their tripe about shooting.

And I agree with Ripley16 - give it a rest!

I read the book, many moons ago, don't remember all the little details.
But, at what range did Hathcock allegedly make the famous shot? Was it 200 yards?
Surely the ace sniper was shooting 1 inch groups at that range.
What is the diameter of a rifle scope? One inch?
Why is it so hard to believe that he made the shot?

Who are we to question his story...we obviously were not there...why would you want to steal some one else's thunder?

    Yup.

    They proved it impossible.

Lets assume for a moment that the shot through the scope never happened..., ..., ..., ...
Hathcock is still one of the finest marksmen to serve this country. And your obsession with the topic is still annoying.

    BURN!!!!

    "[edit] MythBusters
In an episode of the fourth season of the television show MythBusters (29 November 2006, Episode 67), hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman attempted to test the feasibility of shooting through the scope of another rifle, citing the confirmed Hathcock incident of shooting a North Vietnamese sniper through his victim's scope. They were unable to replicate the results in the story using the modern equipment they had on hand, so they declared the myth "busted." However, they did not replicate the exact conditions of Hathcock's combat incident. The MythBusters did not take into consideration powder loads, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, angle, or variations in air pressure and density. On the show, they conceded that they were not shooting at the same scope that Hathcock shot at and stated that under the exactly ideal conditions and with extreme luck, the shot may have been possible. In the episode aired on March 21, 2007, the MythBusters revisited this myth and confirmed that it was possible, however had to use armor-piercing rounds to fully penetrate the scope. They used a vintage scope this time, which was smaller than modern scopes, and Jamie successfully fired a bullet through the scope. The bullet penetrated the ballistic gel dummy's face to a depth of two inches, which would be lethal to a human. However, it should be noted that on the March 21, 2007 episode, that Jamie used an M1 Garand, whereas Hathcock used a Winchester Model 70 chambered in .30-06 Springfield, and utilized armor-piercing ammunition."

tccox said "Well. it must be true, since we had the rifle but it got lost somewhere, between somewhere."

That was a big problem in Viet Nam. Combat infantry not only had the problem of having captured items stolen or confiscated by S-2 or someone with rank but a lot of personal items would come up missing.

And John Kerry is a hero. After all, he did get wounded 3 times didn't he? It must be true, he said it was and he is a congressman and also ran for president.

How about lets have a scope shooting contest. We can have 10,000 people shooting at "glints" at 500 yards and see how many are able to hit the "glint".

As I stated before, I believe this man was a true hero but I just don't buy this story. Sorry!. Tom

I don't know what the truth of that shot is, nor do I care. He was good, and he was prolific. He saved many lives and was a good Marine. Details are meaningless at that point.

I'll take the word of one Marine Gunny before I'll take the word of any twelve of you. My success depends on it here, and my life may depend on it (indeed, has depended on it) elsewhere.
I'm sure most would agree with me.

As I said before, My Dad shot with him in vietnam and I also met him back in the mid 90's. I fully believe it happened the way he said it did as he was not a lying man.

I remember someone telling me that you couldn't shoot the primer out of a 12 ga shell, then I did it.
I also remember someone telling me that you can't fart and burp at the same time, I did that too.
Just because you dodn't think it could happen does not mean that it didn't. I'll take the gunny's word for it.

    I believe Carlos.
There is no point trying to dis-proove what he said happened.

    Let the legend live!

This issue has begun to resemble the beating of a dead horse. Anyone who has shot long enough, and is up on the quirks of various calibers & their ballistics should understand that the shot through the scope is possible. Yes a projectiles path is not exactly straight. However, depending on the distance of the shot the short length of a scope may not be a long enough distance to have much of an affect on the bullets path. Even if it did the scopes tunnel may have had an affect on the bullets path, thereby causing the projectile to ride the inside of a scope till it penetrated through the other lens, or even out side the scopes tube still striking the shooter. I too have never seen the gun that this event is said to have happened with. I however have no reason not to believe C/H, because I have found him to be a rather reliable source of information that every little has ever been questioned about, until this issue raised its ugly head.

I have quit watching "Mythbusters" because I think they are more sensational than scientific.
I would have liked to have seen their "proof" that this shot is impossible.
What is going to happen when the bullet hits that front piece of glass in the scope? Is it going to bounce off? Looks to me like it fractures the glass and goes down the pipe.
I doubt these guys would have the discipline, or even care enough, to get an exact replica of the scope that Commie snipers used in the sixties. Probably like most Commie stuff, made very rugged with THICK STEEL WALLS, just like the rifle they used, the indestructible Mosin Nagant.
Any way you slice it, when a slug packing 2,300 foot pounds or so hits the front glass of your scope, you are in for a bad day.

I still have to question why this is still being questioned.

I would believe H/C before I would believe some so called self proclaimed "local expert who owns a Barrett 50BMG". Something about the old saying of "been there and got that T-shirt" comes to mind when thinking about what H/C went through in combat.

    RIP Gunny.

As for mythbusters proving anything, they disproved the one about people marching over a bridge and it setting up a shaking motion that could damage the bridge.Well in fact it did happen on the millenium bridge over the river Thames. They also disproved the one about a person peeing on a live rail but it did happen back in the 50s in the UK.So I regard that program as just more sensationist acting.Who can prove if a scope was shot thru, anything is possible.

i knew c.h.. he was a fine man and because of it, he had no reason to bragg or make false claims.

and who cares about the shot, we lost the war.[8]

I read the book and as I recall it said the "he saw a glint of light and shot AT IT!" ...Didn't say he saw a sniper's scope and decided to shoot through it! Alot of "funny bababooey" happens in a war, ANYBODY that was there is/was a hero in my book!

Yada Yada. Who does/not believe the BS about the shot thru the enemy scope?

Well, it must be true since I read it in the book?

Well, it must be true since gunny sgt who was there with Hatthcock, said it was true.

Well. it must be true, since we had the rifle but it got lost somewhere, between somewhere.

Well, it must be true because we actually went and picked it out of
his dead hands. Yea, like where is it now?

Well, it must be true since I am a sniper and would never lie about my kills. My spotters never lie and are trained to recover, rifles, badges, and scopes from slain enemy. Unfortunately, they often lose the objects they bravely put their lives on the line .

Ladies and gents, I think Carlos whould have been given the MOH for his effort in saving the guys in the AMP

go on back and watch ed edd and eddy or american idol or whatever and leave great American heroes that put their life on the line to kill Godless commies alone

txcox and his smart, loopy bullets, might be a thing of the future, though. I mean, you know, things might even get to the point where txcox bullets zoom all over the place with some trajectories performing 12 to 15 inch loops, as a norm, within the space of one to two inches, then stop and spin on a dime for a rapid peek to port and starboard before screaming Arriba! Arriba! and zipping off with a backflip, before making the kill through the old type Unertl scope tube twenty-two and one half miles away with no deviation in trajectory, without touching anything but glass - this 418 light years and 6 earth minutes after Carlos did it as if it were all in a day's work with perhaps, a simple comment for his pard that might have went something like this, "Check this &^#$ out, man!"
