I have about 4 of them.

For info, check the archives at www.caranddriver.com They test them periodically.

I don't have one, haven't had one since I've been about 20 or so.

Frankly it is easier just going the speed limit or 5mph over, or otherwise keeping up with the flow of traffic. With radar detectors, you have a variety of problems, including:

    1. Too many false signals, especially in metropolitan areas

    2. They are against the law in a few states and in D.C.

    3. It is a constant game to keep up with the cops. They get new technology and suddenly your detector is rendered obsolete.

    4. They don't watch out for unmarked cars, airplanes, helicopters, etc. that track your speed by more conventional means.

Its not auto ticket i hope, if so, well, ill be getting automatic tickets!

I thought only jammers and covers that hide your plate from cameras were illegal [:D][:D][:D]

depends on state law, not in il or mo perfectly legal

To clarify, in my state they are perfectly legal, but I had heard that if a cop pulled you over and saw the radar detector it was a near impossibility that you would recieve a warning and not a ticket.

This is the police officers discretion. I have been warned on numerous occasions over several years but have only had one ticket since I have had a license. This is even having driven a police officer off the road.

I was pulled over once with one, the cop had to have seen it. I was going 67 in a 55 he gave me a warring. This was a state cop on a state road at 1:30 in the morning. The other time I got pulled over I was going 79 in a 55, you don't get out of those. [:D]

they also are of negligible value against the new burts technology. the only value they have in those circs is if the officer guns a car near you. then you slow down. but if he hits you, your caught before your detector makes a peep.

Multipath still will keep you safe, but you gotta be quick.

Dawnie has one, but apparently she doesn't use it. I don't have one, don't want one, don't need one.

Ive got 3.work truck,Persnl truck And Sharons car.Its saved my azz a bunch of times.Sometimes not.Its not an automatic ticket here,But when Im pulled over Im respectful unless the cop is a d#$k.Then I ask for the ticket so we both can get back to work.Stick with a name brand,I think all mine are Cobras.IMHO they are all going to pick up grocery stores,Automatic doors,Other radar detectors etc.(i havent tried the really expensive ones like Valentine though).

Cobra...Highly sensitive as stated, they will pick up grocery stores etc. Always fired when I needed it, but in VA I'm not allowed to use it. I've heard automatic confiscation and fine so I don't use it anymore. If you are in a state that it's legal, strongly recommend Cobra. Just my $.02

I have owned several. The best is the Escort Passport. You still have to use common sense, but it will save you in the local "speed traps".

I've got something muuuuch better than a radar detector.

I've got a functioning speedometer. When used with actual respect for traffic laws, that speedometer has kept me from ever getting a speeding ticket.

I have two and they are great. Have saved me from countless speed traps around town.

Colonel, I have a semi-functioning speedometer. I have "oversized" tires for my truck. It is a 4x4 that came with 205/75R15 standard and I have put on the more normal sized 235/75R15. This makes my speedometer read lower than I am doing. I can get a pretty close number by adding 10%, ex.. 50 would be 55, 60 would be 66 etc..

But as Alabama says, I'm in a hurry and don't know why.

Here is the one that I have researched and am thinking about now.

I have had a radar detector of some sort for the past ten years or so. Of all the brands, the Passport is the best you can get, but they are the most expensive. For the money, I like the Cobra(I have one now). But I did get a ticket with this one on, though. He was on the backside of a hill, and got me when I topped the hill. I didn't have time to slow down.
As far as Louisiana is concerned, they are not illegal, but the cop will almost always give you a ticket if you happen to get pulled over.

nope, both times were state highway cops who have lasers. With lasers they have you before your thing goes off.

Don't got one but for the price of em, I'll just do the speed limit. Rather get a GPS unit.

It's not just the cost of the ticket but the raise in insurance rates that make the detector cost worthy.

I have only had one ticket in 13 years but have had multiple warnings.

I'm leary of getting a detector, I think it may make me speed more by giving a false sense of security.

I have had a valentine one for close to 10 years now. It has saved me from tickets on numerous occasions. You can set it up so it does not get many false alarms and with the directional arrows and bogey count you have a true understanding of where the threats are.

However, if you are running alone and the officer has instant on laser you are toast no matter what you may have in the way of a detector. I drive through a portion of FL known for speed traps. I was running alone one Sunday morning and slowed to the speed limit in this area. Came around a bend and thwaap off went the laser detector. If I had been speeding I would have been toast. These detect the stray waves bouncing off other vehicles so you need others around for good coverage.

    Cheers,

I have a Rocky Mountain Radar jammer used along with a Uniden detector. The Jammer did not function as they advertise, it's sitting in the closet. Gonna probably put it on Ebay for some fool to buy!
