Any dads in here that could give advice?
Well not only dads but anyone really, but here it goes. My dad earlier this year for my birthday in May said he'd either take me on a fishing trip this summer,or buy me a scope for my hunting rifle. That was three months ago so I just asked him if he could send some scope money up with my mom because there's a big gun show this weekend. So I get the money from her and it turns out to be 50 dollars. Now this won't even cover the cost of scope rings from Ruger. I am stuck on what to do now. I want to call him up and ask him for more to cover the scope because that's what he offered earlier this year, but I don't know if this would be an azzhole move or not. Any help would be appreciated.

ok well...you might not think this is cool. if he thinks giving you more scope money is his idea that is to say you plant a seed and let him realize the idea him self, your more likely to get away with it.my dad dose stuff like that to,it sucks. also just keep checking gun broker i just saw a nice simons scope go for a penny yesterday.what were you looking for i have a few extra laying around . jd 0 -
I am liking the Nikon scopes quite a bit right now, but something that will last me and won't make my Ruger no.1 look like crap. 0 -
[:)] Let it go. Was there any dollar amount suggested by you Dad or was it an assumption how much he would send? Maybe a $50 buck scope was what he was thinking from Walmart... I believe he had a cheap simmons in mind and you were thinking leopold. Thank him for the money and buy what you need yourself. 0 -
Get what you need and thank him for his contribution to the effort. It's rude to question a gift, even if you thought you were promised much more than what you got.
I don't know what's going on. Maybe he doesn't know what a scope costs, maybe something came up and he didn't have the cash he thought he'd have (maybe you'd know about that and maybe not), maybe he was offended that you asked him to send cash in the first place, maybe he's making some other point, or maybe it's something else entirely.
Whatever it is, it is still a gift and you should just thank him for it.

I'm a Dad - 4 Sons and 2 Daughters. I'd like you to think about these things, and try to come to some conclusions:
1) It looks like you and your Dad don't live together. Do you communicate frequently and easily ??
2) Is he gun savvy ?? Does he know what scopes cost (it doesn't appear so)??
3) What's his living situation ?? Does he have a good, steady job ??
4) Did you TELL him what scope you want ??
5) How old are you ?? Your Dad may be underestimating your level of maturity.
I think you must speak to him without laying a guilt trip on him.
Of the few problems my Sons and I have had, the biggest were because we weren't able to read each other's minds. Perhaps you guys are doing this.
If you want, you can email me at ThunderboltRanch@msn.com, or if you send your phone number, I'll call you to talk about this. Or you can call me between 10AM and 3pm, West Coast time, at 503-843-2020.
I'll help any way I can.

Beggars cant be choosers. If my dad gave me $50.00 for a scope, id be going and finding a $50.00 scope. Make due with what he gave you, If it was my dad and I asked for more - from a kind gesture, I doubt id get it ever again. 0 -
Thanks a lot Doug, I'll e-mail you sometime soon. 0 -

well when i was a young kid getting into hunting i didn't have any money parents didn't lots laying around either, i purchased my own scope with money i earned....all i could afford was a cheap at that time was a 20 dollar 4x32 put it on a 243 rifle i gotten as summer wages when i was in high school..........killed a lot of deer, antelope, coyotes and p dogs with it...using lessor quality stuff pry made me the marksman i can do today with better equipment....not trying to brag but i very very seldom miss a shot now......i rancher here won a long distance shooting contest with a really ruff looking rifle and nothing fancy scope over guys who had some pretty expensive stuff....
ps i realize stuff costs lot more than when it did when i was a kid, save up or do some jobs to earn some more money....will pry mean more to you earning it yourself...jmho0 -
!sorry ! feel very stuped ! sorry ! 0 -
Yeah I would save up and earn some but I got a little stupid and my scope fund became my speeding ticket fund, That won't happen again let me tell you. 0 -

Be grateful that your dad gave you anything. Get you a scope and brag on it to your dad.
Wish my dad could just say happy birthday son.0 -
Frank---Thats $50 off any scope You pick. That in my book is a good deal. 0 -
You should have had him make good on the fishing trip instead of wanting material things. Spending time with your father is priceless. 0 -
Does the saying "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" mean anything to you?
If not, look it up.
Maybe your dad is trying to tell you that he would have preferred to spend time with you on a fishing trip than just giving you money.
Says something about you too, that you chose money over time with your dad.0 -
You should buy your Dad something for more than $50 (a new Real?). Then tell him you want to go on that fishing trip. Then show him the Leopold scope that you had your eye on at his local gun shop or online somewhere. 0 -
...just wish my Dad was around to hear is voice again, to talk with him even for 1 minute...[;)]

You come across as well intended; however, a gift from Dad is a GIFT. Appreciate it and know it is his love which doesn't have a monetary value. As to scopes, I carry NcStar scopes and have sold many to happy hunters and shooters. They carry a lifetime warranty. My best seller is the 3-9x50mm Illuminated scope with Weaver Mount Rings (you can order the Ruger rings from them).
http://www.ncstar.com/productDetails.php?PID=79
I sell this scope at gunshows for $69, my cost is less than $40. Furthermore it is a very good scope for the cost. You can possibly find it online with the rings you need for around $65 - Good Luck.0 -
Many scopes will come and go in your life.
You only get one dad and when you lose him, there is no replacement.
Let's hope you receive better judgement and still have the opportunity to visit with your dad next birthday.0 -
doug, your the man! And very good replies from everone. how old are you? if your over 18, your just being silly. Dont complain about a gift.... 0 -
plus on forkking and skyking,,,,forget about the friggin scope dude,,,go fishing and relate to things that dad and son do, if you don't someday you will understand( hopefully)nambu 0 -
I'd take the $50 and buy your dad a birthday or father's day gift with it. If you have a Ruger #1 with sights, you are still young enough and can see well enough to use the sights out to a couple hundred yards. I never had need for a scope til my mid 40's when my eyes started to go fuzzy.
You spend the $50 on your dad and I'll give you a new 4x12x40 Bushnell scope. Still have to earn your own rings.0 -
I feel for you. The gifts I recieve are never good enough either.[V] 0 -
I'd consider the $50 a gift and do the following:
1. Thank him.
Then, I'd do one of the following:
1. Put the money toward a new scope and consider it $50 off.
2. Put the money in the bank.
3. Spend $50 on my dad.
Never, ever complain about the size or amount of a gift. Not only is that rude, but it is a surefire way to guarantee you'll never see another one.0 -
If I gave my son $50 and he questioned it, I would tell him I made a mistake and to send it back.
Then I would mail him $25.
Not trying to be mean. Dad's need to teach their kids right from wrong. Never question a honestly given gift from the heart.
Also, you might be surprised how much scope you can get for your money on the auction sites. If not, add a little money of your own or wait for the next gift and add it to the pot until you get enough.
Or maybe he gave you $200 and mom took it and only gave you one fourth of it. If you think so poorly of your dad maybe you should question your momma, too.
Aside from all my criticism, I honestly do hope you have a nice birthday. Best Wishes.0 -
I think your Dad was hoping you would choose the fishing trip....
50 bucks is 50 bucks...I would take a look at bigdaddyjunior's post, sounds like a great deal.0 -
bigdadyjunior, your one hell of a good guy. jd 0 -
My answer is based on the limited information you gave and it is only a possibility your dad may feel left out.
You made the wrong choice for a present. One present came with companionship the other was a "gift certificate" and Dad didn't even get invited to the birthday party or get any cake. The $50 is just stuff.0
