Any of you ever jump....................
out of a perfectly good airplane? I've been sky diving since the mid 1970's and today will be my first jump since last Summer. Finished my refresher course yesterday and had breakfast with our pilot this morning to discuss today's jump. We're going up in a freshly renovated Pilatus turbo Porter PC6. Should be a blast! [^]

bobski does (did) that kind of stuff for a living. My next jump will be my first. [:D] 0 -
Ony when they are on the ground![:D][:D] 0 -
I was part of the backend crew of a carrier based E2-B in the Navy. People used to ask me if I had or desired to practice jumping just in case I ever had to exit the aircraft in an emergency while it was still in the air. My response was no, it didn't make any sense to me to practice for something you had to do right the first time![:D]
Good luck and have fun!0 -
porters are flying starships. smooth as silk. can carry a lot of payload. watch your head, mr. skytrash![:D]

I thought about doing it when I'm around 95 years old. If the chute didn't open, wouldn't miss much! [^]
Factory warranty states, that you just bring in the chute if it fails...
They'll replace it free of charge.

2000+ hours in helo's with another 1K in various fixed wing platforms. Never failed to ride a single one back to earth. 0 -
If I want the feeling of weightless drifting to an uncertain ending with the very real possibility that I might die in the attempt, I'll get divorced again. 0 -
its too hot to paint outside. its time to dig into scrap books! thanks for saving me today!
here was my primary rig. wonderhog 2 with cruisair 200sq ft cross-ported 7 cell, modified stabs, w/safety star 5 cell reserve. i called her 'solid gold.' neither one ever failed me. must be because i never speed packed. maybe its was because i was a parachute rigger by trade and i knew what would happen![:0]

77 sport jumps. Was also president of the local skydiving club. We even had the World Team practice here for the Olympics.[8D]I still have one of the red, white, and blue P.C.'s that was used in Competition. 0 -
not many places ive havent polluted the air with my body falling thru it.
this dz is on top of the mountain pass where the japs passed thru to bomb pearl harbor. it was kinda funny in the a/c flying around wondering what it was like back in 41. the topography hadnt changed much. pineapple fields and cane fields for dole. and you could see the entire navy base just like it was photographed so long ago. crispest freshest air i ever smelled in my life was up there. jumpers know what i mean. its part of the rush. this dz was part of the 25th inf army jump club, helemono HI. 1983.

Maybe..just maybe this could be cool.[;)]0 -
Funny you should ask. I'm getting ready to get back into it after 13 years off. I had 970 jumps when I stopped in '94. Looking at a DZ here in Mich that has a Grand Caravan(single turbine, hauls 17). Getting my rig airworthy now. Had to replace the reserve pilot chute, one bonehead rigger pinholed it with a packing paddle. Mine's a Javelin J-7 with a Sabre 190 main and Raven reserve. They tell me the sport has changed but hopefully none of the laws of aerodynamics have been repealed.
HobbyGuy, I KNOW you'll be watching 'Fandango' as part of your refresher, right?[8D]0 -
I've carried one skydiver out in a a body bag in the back of a pickup. The ambulance wouldn't go that far back in the pasture. We used count the dead by where they landed around the airport. I've lost count.
Business is kind of slow for the airport in the last couple of years.
That's close enough for me.0 -
I allways wanted too!
But with my bad knees and a reconstructed hip all I can do these days is dream about it![:(]0 -

What is the percentage in relationship of how many people drove, how many miles to how many people sky dived? Then we'll talk.
And yes, I have, would have done that again 10 years ago probably but not now, not anymore.0 -
Sidenote: The Porter turbo (Swiss designed acft.) is one of my all-time favorites. Excellent short-field/high density altitude capability. Air America used them a lot in Vietnam. And there's almost no systems to fail! The elev. trim and flaps are manually controlled by bicycle chains!!! 0 -
I hope the guys riding the hopper and center section of that Grumman AG Cat missed the tail when they got off. 0 -
...Alas, just once, out of a twin Otter. They had a DC-3 visiting, but the roster was full. Loved it, but decided that learning to fly the damn thing made more sense than jumping out of it. I'd do it again if my spine wasn't made up from spare parts at Ace Hardware.

where were you in 1981? i was doing a blue angels air show in lakehurst n.j.. name that plane!
0 -
As long as there's a tail, two wings, and no fire, it's technically a glider. I'm staying with the plane (assuming of course it has manual controls opposed to hydraulic or fly-by-wire). 0 -
just once for me,
but wanted to say enjoyed your pics, bobski0
