Dog, Put to sleep???
OK, I need some help here.
My family dog is due to be put to sleep next Tuesday.
He is about 10 years old, in good health. BUT he nips at people, not really a bite but will snap at hands etc.
He only does it because he is scared when people move fast. He will go to see someone new and if they move too fast he gets nervous and snaps at them.
He has also snapped at my young nephew when he petted him while the dog was sleeping.
Noone in the family wants the dog put to sleep but don't want to have my nephew get scarred, or have a person sue because of a dog bite.
The dog already has had all front teeth removed by the Vet because of gum problems. (Dog had a severe underbite bothering him.)
Could the canines be removed? Without canines the dog could not do much damage. He snaps and runs away. The problem is the Vet says he will not remove the canines.
Ideas anyone? We have already tried to find a new home and there is none, plus the dog would not be happy.

There are many Schnauzer rescue organizations throughout the US. Just search on Google. There's a GB member that has a Schnauzer rescue---I think in Kentucky----can't remember who it is.
For Heaven sakes before "killing" the poor creature----turn him over to a Schnauzer rescue. Maybe he'll find a new home where he'll be appreciated and considered "one of the family".
Obviously, your mother doesn't consider him as one of the family.
What's she gonna do when the 5yo starts biting people? Euthanize him!0 -

He is a great dog. He is just very nervous. Always has been, it is his nature. You can't really train a dog not to be nervous, if a dog is gunshy, he will most likely always be gunshy. The dog is well trained, sit, potty trained. etc. But I seem to be the only one able to make him STAY.
I personally don't view your mother as a bad person, just miss-informed.
The dog you describe is exhibiting a dominant behavior problem which Can be corrected. I also recognize symptoms of Severe separation anxiety, this too can be corrected. Any dog of any age can be reconditioned, it just takes patients and consistent training.
If you have any in your area, contact some dog obedience trainers and discuss the situation with them.0 -
I wouldn't put the dog down. I would put him in the yard when guest were visiting, or maybe in a bedroom with the door closed. I might invest in some obedience school for him or get a book and try training him myself. There are lots of options before killing him. He's here and living, give him a chance. He's only doing what he believes he needs to be safe and survive. 0 -

No, a old woman. It was a scretch that barely broke the skin. She worked at making it worse. That came out in court but she still won $90,000.00.0 -
What is this about a 10 year old dog being "old"? My mutt will be eighteen if she makes it to January. She is blind in one eye, I think she may be almost deaf & she has problems with her hind legs.
Every time I buy a new bag of dog food I wonder if she will get through it.
I got her at the dog pound when she was a puppy. They had kept her beyond the time they were allowed & they told my son that if we didn't take her they would have to put her down when we left.
I tried to get him to take another dog but after that there was no way. As soon as we got home the first thing my wife said was "That is the ugliest dog I have ever seen, are you sure it isn't just a very large rat?"0 -

They are worried that the dog will get to the people before they do and bite them when they try to pet it. Then comes the lawsuit etc......
I believe that animal is actually from the RODENT family, not really a dog at all. If you think of it that way it makes the decision alot easier0 -

My mother-in-law has a Dachsund from hell, Franklin. Franklin hates ANYONE who doesn't live in his house, and he will vigorously attack and bite any visitors, even family members who visit frequently. I think Franklin is an idiot and if he were mine, I would break him of the habit. But he isn't mine, and Miss Bobbie just loves him, so she makes allowances. Whenever anyone visits, Franklin is fastened in a bedroom or in a pen in the back yard.
Speaking of allowances, I have to make allowances every day for Beau, Dawnie's psychotic rat terrier. He has never offered to bite me, at least not hard, but he snarls, growls, barks, and charges the fence whenever I come home, as though I am some stranger he has never seen before. He is also an idiot.0 -
hey, why dont you just give the dog to some guy like this?? afterall, its about the same size and what does it matter? afterall to kill is to kill. i view it as the same level of brutality as an owner that kills a dog for convienience. sorry. fact is a fact.[:(][xx(]
