Dog, Put to sleep???
OK, I need some help here.
My family dog is due to be put to sleep next Tuesday.
He is about 10 years old, in good health. BUT he nips at people, not really a bite but will snap at hands etc.
He only does it because he is scared when people move fast. He will go to see someone new and if they move too fast he gets nervous and snaps at them.
He has also snapped at my young nephew when he petted him while the dog was sleeping.
Noone in the family wants the dog put to sleep but don't want to have my nephew get scarred, or have a person sue because of a dog bite.
The dog already has had all front teeth removed by the Vet because of gum problems. (Dog had a severe underbite bothering him.)
Could the canines be removed? Without canines the dog could not do much damage. He snaps and runs away. The problem is the Vet says he will not remove the canines.
Ideas anyone? We have already tried to find a new home and there is none, plus the dog would not be happy.

When I was a kid, most of my elderly female relatives had dogs, and usually they were old cranky dogs. How was this handled when family and especially children were around?
"Y'all leave the dog alone. She's old and she'll bite ya."
That was enough. Anyone who didn't heed the warning usually got a butt busting to go along with the bite.0 -
The dog is a Miniature Schnauzer. My family always had this breed and most live around 12-13 years before health deems euthanization.
My nephew is good and will mind, but the dog likes him and likes to hang around him. They are good together but my mother when babysitting him is worried that he will get bitten.
My parents run a rental property next door and strange people come to the house often and the dog always wants to greet them.
They are worried that the dog will get to the people before they do and bite them when they try to pet it. Then comes the lawsuit etc......0 -

Weighs what? 15 pounds?
Some of its teeth are missing?
I guess I am a little dense, but I just don't see a huge liability concern with such a dog. If such a dog were to bite me, and I were to ever find out about it, I might ask the owner to buy me a beer.
Also, it seems to me that dogs, as well as people, deserve a little leniency for eccentric behavior when they get old.
I am betting too, that this dog's "nervous" problem is related to failing eyesight.0 -
I hate to see this. When I was young, a small sign would have taken care of the problem, or if this little dog would have bitten someone, they would have taken it and figured it was their own fault. But, in this "sue happy" society, it's just an oportunity to exploit someone. Too bad a nice little dog has to be caught in the middle for being a little "cranky". IMHO
Maybe some old cranky fart will take the the pup. Maybe put an ad in the paper?

But the dog is not mine. It is my parents. I have thought about taking over care of the dog, but I am usually gone between 4 in the morning to 4-5 at night. Then the only people to take care of the dog during the day is my mother. The dog would be at her house during the problem times.
The dog does not do well alone. It loves to be around people. If you leave him alone in the house and walk outside you can hear him howling. Come back an hour later from the store and he is still howling.
We tried the muzzle. He did not like it at all and rubbed his face in his bed to try to get it off. We figured he would get used to it and stop. But before he got used to it he wore his nose down to the point of bleeding. So we stopped with the muzzle.
When I have been playing with the dog and he gets overzealous, he has brought blood from my hands. With just Canines it is easier for them to puncture and tear.0 -
Are you sure that there isn't something else ailing the dog? Eyesight? Hearing? Some sort of vestibular deterioration?
Dogs usually nip as a means of defense, maybe one of these is comprimised.
Hate that you would have to put the dog down. Next door neighbor had a litle beagle that was kept in his yard, which was fenced in. Neighbor on the other side had a boy about 10 years old, and he and a friend were taunting the dog through a small hole in the fence between their yards. One kid stuck his face in the hole, and the dog nipped him in the lip. Kid's dad is an attorney. Told my neighbor "Put the dog down, or I will sue." Neighbor had to put the dog down, which about broke his heart.0 -
Aleut's put old people on ice floes and just let them drift off. I would not kill an admittedly loving companion of 10 years just because he was getting old and feeble. He's earned the right to be left the hell alone if that's what he wants.

give him his own room and let him live out his life.
killing a dog for convienince is inhumane. they owned him, deal with it. they are its MASTER. he depends on their decisions. how would your kids feel if the next time they got sassy, you threatened to REALLY kill them or cut their teeth out? what happened to mans BEST FRIEND here?[8]

I have a 10+ year old Rottie. She is old and doesnt like to be messed with. Everyone knows it including my 7 year old and they leave her alone. Respect was earne by her though.
I would not put it to sleep, instead I would train the people around it.............0 -

Buschmaster, nope not trying to get a rise out of people. Trying to get more ideas to let this dog live.
It is basically my mothers dog and she is the main person in the decision for euthanization.
If the dog were mine, I'd just put up warning signs and if you got bit, then its your own fault.
I have been trying to get her to reconsider.
Such as a fenced in area in the yard so that the dog can't get to visitors, but she is still worried about my nephew getting bit and having scars. Mainly if he bit his face.

Meant to add earlier that my nephew is about 1-1/2 years old. A good kid, but it is impossible to make a young kid understand about the dog. The dog loves him and follows him everywhere, but if startled could bite at him. 0 -
You might try an indoor cage that the dog could sleep in. just lock him in when the kids around. I dont know if you can teach an old dog to sleep in a new kennel. My dogs are all kennel trained as pups and love to sleep in their kennels inside or outside the house. 0 -

So your mother needs to kill her dog, so that she can be a good babysitter for a family member?
No way would I do that,.......I would tell the family member that they need to find another babysitter, and then go to the other location to visit the 1.5 year old.

If it were my dog I wouldn't kill it, but I can't tell your mother what to do with her dog. Not that she would do what I told her anyway. Sorry to hear about it. Losing a good dog can ruin your decade (or more). 0 -
I have a real old rotty. She doesn't like to get messed with by many folks. When my daughter started crawling she would harrass the heck out of my poor dog and the dog would snap at her and nail her a bit. She never did draw blood and my daughter learned even at her young age not to harrass the dog or to back off if she growled. Little toddlers can and do learn to respect a dogs space. I don't know if your dog would warn her with a nip like mine or really nail the kid.
It used to make me laugh I would hear my dog really sounds vicious and run out into the room and she would have my daughters hand in her mouth and I would run and break it up and look at my daughters hand because the dog sounded so bad and she wouldn't even have a red mark. Once I heard the ruckus and came into the living room and my dog had my daughters leg in her mouth and my daughter had my dogs leg in her mouth. Was the funniest thing I've ever seen.0 -
1) Get your Mom a new dog.
2) Take the old dog to the no-kill Humane Society near you and explain the problem.
3) They will keep her until she dies naturally, or is adopted by an informed owner.
4) Everbody's happy.

We have a Miniature Schnauzer----2-1/2 yo---male (fixed). Schnauzers are very energetic, spirited, friendly (but loves to bark at anything and everything), highly intelligent, obedient and loves to please. They love to play and love walks.
Now---how much time is spent with this dog on a daily basis. A good energetic and long walk each and every day will do wonders for any dog. He needs to "burn up" energy. Anyone ever play with him, walk with him or does he just lay around all day and not given any exercise?
Someone needs to get up off their lazy BUTT and give this poor dog some long overdue companionship and daily walks or continue to sit on their lazy BUTT and keep telling themselves that "killing" him is the only answer.

Ok, after getting lots of poor views of my parents here and on Yahoo Answers, I will try again to clear everything up.
First off, thanks to everyone that responded.
I am only trying to help the dog, but I do not have the "authority" to make the decision. It is not my dog.
My parents are extremely good to the dog. He is an inside lap dog. Gets tons of attention and is always with someone. He goes nuts if he is left alone. Leave him alone in a room seperate from you and he will cry nonstop. If he stops crying it is because he has become pissed and is now using the bathroom EVERYWHERE to make you not want to leave him alone again.
He is a great dog. He is just very nervous. Always has been, it is his nature. You can't really train a dog not to be nervous, if a dog is gunshy, he will most likely always be gunshy. The dog is well trained, sit, potty trained. etc. But I seem to be the only one able to make him STAY.
My mother is always outside gardening and has the dog with her. The dog has free run of the yard and knows its boundaries and understands not to go outside of them. But if someone comes inside the yard and the dog sees them first, he will go to see them, not to attack but just to check them out. He's a cute dog and seems nice, but if you go to pet him, he will bite. This is where the lawsuit worries are based.
I have talked her into a fence for the dog, but she is still worried about my nephew.
If you close the dog in an enclosed space he gets pissed and cries.
I do not want to see the dog euthanized, but like I say it is not my dog and not my decision. I will NOT hold this against my mother if this is the decision she makes, for it will not be easy for her.0 -

Did you ever ask your mom, if she lost capacity of any kind, or became a PIA to anyone, could you have her euthanized?
I should not have said that, but it is relevant.
When you get a pet,......at least to me, it is till death. You take care of them like a child, and also like an older family member on their way out. IMHO0 -
