CAT DIED. NEED HELP FINDING RIGHT DOG
Well the cat finally died today after 13yrs with us. I hate cats but mine was pretty cool. Looking for a large breed dog that is good with kids and family and friends, on the other hand i want one that i know would do whatever he could to protect my wife and kid when im not around. Never had a dog of my own so i want to make the best choice. Any info would be much great.

Nope. I was not home during the attack. My dauhter called me at work, frantic. By the time I got there, it was over. Owners already had their dog in their home. After the attack, it was placed on 10-day "quarentine" at the discresion of the owners (a.e. in their home). Local SPCA said as it was "animal on animal" aggression, they would to have at least two more reports before they would consider putting it down.
Called the district officer, she came and put him down.
In any case, considering the trauma our dog had been though, he is still a great dog. Hasn't changed at all, except for not liking the nextdoor neighbors at all. As far as a watchdog goes, a person doesn't even pull up in front of the house or lay a foot on the steps before I know about it.0 -
Kid-friendly, protective of their people, excellent hunters -- either a Golden Retriever or a Labrador. The only fault I know of with the Labs is a tendency to chew on anything and everything as pups, but (and this applies to the Goldens as well) their greatest goal in life is to please their people. As soon as they get old enough and trained enough to know what you want, they deliver.
There are many excellent breeds of dogs for your purposes, but if I were laying money on a specific one or two, it'd be a Golden or a Lab.
Or one of my God-knows-what-they-are little mutts, but you can't have them.0 -

Malamutes are great people dogs, as well, loving, family oriented, but the problem is they like people so much they make lousy alarm dogs. And they don't really bark. They talk. 0 -
Female Labrador - any color. I've had a Male, and my Daughter has a Female. They were both lovers. However, when a Salesman stuck his foot in the door to hold it open while My Mom was trying to close it, my gentle Loves everybody Lab became a bundle of hair and teeth, digging at the door and snarling and barking like Out of some Hollywood Horror show! Happened twice over ten years. Really something to see, as it was totally unexpected. He Knew.
When we had a Bear come up to the house just a few years ago, our Female Lab, SILENTLY, came into our bedroom, and got the wife up, and away from the back wall of the house where the bear was trying to get in. Wife LOVES that dog!
Kids have poked their eyes, broke their tails, choked them, ridden them, hurt them, and they never even nipped the kids.
I would not hesitate to get another. This Female we have now is about the smartest dog I have ever met. Quick to learn, Eager to please, Long memory, really good in new and unique situations.0 -
Well hate you lost your cat, but I happen to have two Airedale pups available, 1 male, 1 female. We own and have raised the dog and bitch from pups, they both have been nothing but fantastic with our grandkids and they are mu buddies and follow me around horseback everywhere and have a great personality

I have sold pups for that amount 8 years ago. But at that price you need to be dealing with a well known kennel. They should be a member of the BM national org as well as their regional org. You need to ask about hip e-rays of the stud & bitch and should be able to see one or both of them. How many champions in the last 5 generations? I suggest getting young pup - even of another breed. Strong willed breeds need a master early. Otherwise there is a challenge on who the he** is the boss!
One other thing. Many breeders will sell non-show pups for half price. I have done that and after a vet letter saying that they have been spayed or nutered, I offer the AKC papers. You will have all the traits of other pups in the litter but from a show persective, they may not have a great black mask, blockey head, color, etc. As a protecter and best friend they will do anything you need.

My daughter's 8 year old Golden Retreiver bit a father coming to pick up his little girl. My daughter was going to put it down. Sadly for the dog as it was only doing it's job on a stranger. At the last minute we rescured her from the final shot, traveling 1400 miles. We kept her until we could find a good place for her since we live in town and do not have room for a big dog. We found friends at church that took her and had another Golden about 5 years old. They live on 400 acre farm which is a deer farm. The dog took to it right away of course and hasn't bothered a single deer on the farm, which we weren't sure of when we took her there. Not long ago the new owners advised us that the Golden is going blind and she has growled at the husband, the feed delivery guy and her little boy. They want her put down obviously. I just can't bring myself to do it to this lovely and faithful dog. I have had to ask my son to take care of it and not tell me about it. I love my dogs and can't stand to see them shot or hurt. They are like innocent young children and I am very protective of them. Their loyalty is awesome. I have always hunted and killed many deer, rabbits, squirrel, pheasants, ducks, coyotes, quail, geese, cats, etc. but I just can't kill a dog. Go figure. It must be my age or when a farmer shot and killed my bassett hound when I was a kid. He said it was chasing his livestock but we trained that dog on all livestock, sheep, horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, to not harm them. We knew the farmer was not telling us the truth and my Dad almost shot him with his .38 but my Mom stopped him. I will never forget this event as a child and the loss of this old family Bassett hound. I went to school with this farmers kids and he treated his kids about like he treated dogs. I really felt sorry for his kids. Dogs won't let you down. I can't imagine life without a dog. 0 -

I love my Lab, and he is a great family dog, but he is MY dog, and he knows it. My commands he obeys instantly. When Dawnie tells him to do something, he sometimes obeys, and sometimes checks with me to be sure it's OK. When one of the nieces try to order him around, he just ignores them.
When it is time to replace Sam, I reckon I may have to just get another Lab. There just isn't a better dog.0 -

ok... I have 3 labs and 1 Catahoula now. In the past with catahoulas, labs, Rotts, German Shepards, dalmations and walker hounds... all around best for protection hands down have been my catahoulas. They are great family dogs and will protect with their life. I HIGHLY recommend "double ott" catahoulas. These dogs are not over bred like most of the more "main stream" dogs. There are good dogs of any breed... I would suggest looking around and actually talking to breeders. You can always put a deposit down on an upcoming litter. Good luck!

I'll chime in on the Beagles. Great dogs! Non aggressive,good early warning system,good companions,known to steal covers. (and sandwiches) [:D]
But for a pet get a gyp. They are more laid back. Want to please and don't spend so much time aggravating the neighbors barking at nonexistent owls at 2AM! A lot of males are just plain bull headed!
Before I would spring for big bucks on a dog I'd ask for DNA proof of ancestry. The breeder shouldn't quibble. In fact they should offer it as part of the package. Unless they are hiding something like a history of hip displaysia,other bad bloodline traits,or false registering documentation. (inbreeding) [V]

DNA can be worthless... reason is my most expensive dog... my oldest lab.. is from the top bloodlines in the USA and dna tested.. yadda yadda.. issue is the dog is allergic to EVERYTHING! My bord dog is allergic to ALL fowl and water plants.. trees... grass... ok easier to list the few things he is not allergic to ..rabbit, pork, deer, rice, sweet potato and fish... Yup thats it! even spices the dog is in effect the worst bred dog I have ever owned. (but I love him!)0 -
I had a beagle with 5 field champions in her bloodline. That dog would chase rabbits all day long...as long as you didn't bring a gun. She was so gun-shy, if you even reached toward the keys for the gun cabinet she'd be upstairs under the bed in a flash! 0
