CAT DIED. NEED HELP FINDING RIGHT DOG
Well the cat finally died today after 13yrs with us. I hate cats but mine was pretty cool. Looking for a large breed dog that is good with kids and family and friends, on the other hand i want one that i know would do whatever he could to protect my wife and kid when im not around. Never had a dog of my own so i want to make the best choice. Any info would be much great.

I have no firsthand experience but I've read where Golden Retriever's can be very protective of their families and are great family dog's. As soon as I get my backyard fenced in I'm going to look into one. 0 -
yeah... as soon as i read the original post i thought of a golden retriever...very protective and very gentle with their loved ones, and an added bonus of course, top hunters...all round good dogs. 0 -

+1 on the Goldens. Fatantastic with kids. We've had 2 over the years and will probably be looking for another this summer.
A couple of friends also have German Rottweilers. Very kid friendly and protective as hell.
Alaskan malamuts are also another consideration.0 -
i have had a viszla for 10 years now and a german shorthair for a year and both dogs are great with kids and haven't had a break in yet. knock on wood. 0 -

Golden Retriever/Lab mix. Even ours, who was mauled by a pit bull last year, is still a sweetheart. Calm, sweet, good natured, friendly to most (except the next door neighbors who owned the pit bull), yet protective. Snuggles with the cat. 0 -

If you want reallly large dog when I was a kid we had a St. Bernard it was very protctive of us we use to ride him like a horse all the time 0 -

As far as I'm concerned there are two breeds of dog. Labrador Retriever and everything else. Labs are as gentle as a Lab and very protective. My favorite is a female yellow Lab, but all Labs are Labs.
The best dog I ever had was an "everything else". Her mother was a German Shepherd and her father was a Yellow Lab. She looked like a Lab.
I have an Australian Shepherd now. She is a great dog, but a little high maintenance and a little intolerant of strangers. I don't recommend an Australian Shepherd for a first dog.0 -
most upland bird dogs are very high strung,(can't sit still w/o shaking). Better off outside most of the time unless under direct supervision.
Every breed has it's oddities though. I'm a chessie owner and have had a few german short hairs. Had some of each that were great in the house all the time, some that ate everything in site.0 -

+1 to that, I actually have a St bernard and great pyraniese mix hes an awesome dog, protective but once he knows ya, a big baby. Saints are famous for there with kids friendliness.

My Shepard / lab mix has been a good dog. If he died tomorrow hes had a wonderful life. Best dog on earth.
Labrador full blood will get BIG and knock kids down. but if you like to go fishin alot, they can swim..0 -

Golden's are pretty much a guarantee with kids. I haven't seen very many hunting dogs that wouldn't happily hop in the back of a strangers pick-up though, so I have never thought of them as protective, at least not the dozen or so I've had in my life. Just make sure you get a pup, so that it bonds with your "pack" but remember it is a lifelong commitment and the more time you devote to them as a pup, the more personality they will have their whole life. For me, for a pet, Malamute.

One of these days I'll be picking up an Olde English Bulldogge (not to be mistaken with the English Bulldog). But like most things in life one needs to train all them dogs. As for your family needing protection while you're gone shotgun and a cell phone comes to mind. Hell a safe room might fit the bill, too (instead of a dog). 0 -
Best dog I ever had was a flat coat black retreiver. Great with kids and family, loves water, loves finding and retreiving ducks, geese, pheasants and squirrels. Had him trained on hand signals. He had more courage than Rambo. I have had many dogs all my life and this was the smartest and best mannored dog I ever owned. He would have died protecting us at a heartbeat. Hard to find but well worth the effort. I have owned labs, beagles, bassetts, poodles, muts, german shepards, etc. I can't recommend this dog any higher. 0 -
I owned, bred, and showed Bull Mastiffs for about 25 years. Great with kids. My wife, who works eves and is home alone all day, felt safe in our country home even with the doors unlocked. We had two for a number of years, total weight around 270#, even friends would ask if it was OK to come in. Very laid back dogs - eating and sleeping are their favorite pastime! They don't need a lot of excerise - I have about 1/2 acre fenced out the back door. They prefer to go out for a brief time and them come in for a nap. One thing unique to the breed is that in an attack, they don't maul & kill. The drop the bad guy and pin him to the ground and hold him. They were bred years ago to be estate protection against pochers. The instict is still there.
Many fine breeds there - I just wanted to share my experience. B.T.W. - if I hear that you buy from a pet store rather than a well thought of breeder I'm coming after you!!!
