Considering a new Subaru Forester. My brother has 200,000 plus on an Outback and it's still going strong. What thinks you??

I bought a 2008 Impreza Wagon a month ago for my wife, who feels the car is a perfect match for her driving habits, skills, and personality.
I'm impressed with the engine, transmission, "feel" of the steering/suspension, and power.
There is a bit of wind noise at highway speed, but if one wants a quieter car ... spend another $10K.
She has the compass/self-dimming mirror, iPod interface [still figuring it out] and remote start.
I have 12 months to decide whether to buy the extended warranty.
If I was doing it again, I might have ponied up for the Impreza Outback Sport, with
heated mirrors, seats, wiper blades, and some other stuff.0 -

We have a 1985 we purchased when my wife was pregnant with my first som. I wanted an imexpensive car for her that was safe, reliable, 4 wheel drive and had ac as a woman needs that when expecting. The Subaru was nearly the only car that fit the bill at that time. My son is now a senior in electrical engineering and he drives the Subaru to college. It has 200,000 miles and except for normal wear items and the occassional damage from other cars, it still runs well. We have gotten more than full value from this car.
Concerning gays driving it over other cars, so what. I drive my own car. You see many Subarus in the NC mountains and it is because of there servicability. If someone wants to market a car to many sections of society that it there right. \A stock holder should want the management to sell as many cars as possible and all money is green.0 -

I have a 93 Legacy that runs like a top with 245,000 miles, passes somg test as good as any new car, uses less than a 1/4 quart of oil between changes. Last march wife and I bougt a new car now it just sits in the driveway. I start it every 30 days, we just couldn't let it go. 0 -

The Subaru is also the favorite car among North Carolina hillbillies.
I live in the mountains of NC and there are more Subarus up here than any other car. These mountain people know the Subaru to be rugged and reliable, and good in the snow.0 -
Well ....
I worked a few years back for a while as a Q.C. inspector with an independant company working at the subaru plant in Indiana . With what I was exsposed to and wittnessed , I would NEVER consider one of these p.o.s.'s ...and as a thought almost NONE of the employees working there will buy one of these , even with their 'discounts' ???
and thats not the case at most other car plants , go figure ??????

The wind noise in my Impreza was just terrible. Turned out to be caused by the gaps in the side-mirror mounts. I put tape over the joints and everything got quiet. Don't remember what I paid for the tape, but it was a lot less than $10K.
My wife and I have driven Subarus since 1978. They're just the ticket for snowy Wisconsin back roads. We have gay friends who also drive Subarus, but we can't see what in the world the sexual orientation of other drivers has to do with our transportation choices.0 -
I test-drove a new 2008 Forester in October (deluxe LL Bean edition). I couldn't believe how low-powered it was compared to the 2006 model that I currently own.
I think that new "eco-friendly" engine that Subaru installed for 2008 was a big mistake. I thought I was back in the 1970's driving a Chevy Vega.
I definitely recommend you take a test drive up a few hills before you decide to buy a 2008 Forester.0 -
To add to the list, Subarus are also very popular here in (rather conservative) eastern WA state.
I drive the Impreza (economy model). I got mine with 100K miles on it and have found it to be a very reliable car.
Likes: all-wheel drive, good handling (it's hilly and snowy here so those are good things). Overall low maintenance costs due to reliability.
Dislikes: not much power (but it is only a 1.8L engine and I don't know how it was treated before I got it), door design (why wouldn't you put a frame over the window?...ridiculous!), poor gas-mileage considering what it is (27-30 mpg regardless of how or where I drive it).
I'll buy another Subaru for my next car if there is any chance that I'd want all-wheel drive on it. Otherwise I'll go with a Honda or Toyota.0 -
Our daughters first car was a Sabaru...Nice car and very reliable. Not many folks are aware of the "Hill Saver" device that Sabaru has...Great for a first time driver with a clutch.. 0
