    I asked a Va. trooper the other day about his sidearm. He said it was, in fact, a Sig 229 in .357 sig. He said he was a new trooper (nice guy) and hadn't shot enough of other cal.s to give a comparison.

    Georgia State Patrol just went to the Glock 37 in .45 GAP alittle more than a year ago. Figures Georgia would be one of the first to use the new .45 GAP since Glock is based right here in Smyrna, GA.

    I haven't looked lately but Washington (WSP) has carried the Beretta for a long time.

    Alabama has several different departments....but I am pretty certain that they are issued a Beretta first and then later just about ALL of the officers I know of buy a Glock for themselves.

    Pennsylvania is in the process of switching to Glock 37s in 45 GAP. Arizona gives officer choice of Sig P239, P229, P226 all in 40S&W
    If Kansas really does issue an LDA, that is the first dept I have heard of that does so.
    And does Kentucky really use 1076s? That hasn't been made for years.

    New Jersey State police issued HK P7 for many years. Don't know what they went to went they switched a couple of years back.

    The SIG is the standard issue Secret Service pistol. They own some FN Five-Seven's, but they're just for special purpose use. Many people think Presidential Security when this agency is mentioned, but VIP protection is actually only one of their duties. It's primarily an investigative agency.

    Texas Rangers are allowed to carry just about any autopistol they choose as long as it's at least 9mm. All I've seen are toting 1911-type .45 ACP's or SIG's in either .357 SIG or .45 ACP.

    IRS converted from 9mm sigs to Glocks in 40 cal. about 2 years ago. As to model, the agents were offered two models, a 22 or model 23. Personal choice between compact or full size.

    Round guns just have more style and panache. Those plastic bottom-feeders lack the elegance of a fine .357 Magnum revolver.

    Oh well. That's progress,,, I guess.

    True, but they nearly triple the intrinsic capacity, plus probably double to triple the reload speed.

    Sounds trite, but capacity is pretty much the ONLY reason they're so widely used. There is no intrinsic advantage (and in fact a possible disadvantage) when it comes to reliability, accuracy, and stopping power.

    I wonder what percentage of municipal/local PDs are still using wheelguns as their primary duty gun.

    I'm actually *shocked* to see that one dept (Kentucky) has a 10mm as its issue gun!

    Just about every other agency uses the .40.

    I know NYC cops use the 9mm because their force is so large, they have lots of new recruits and female officers, and found it easier to standardize on 9mm. IIRC, they still use a pretty hot 124 gr 9mm+P round.

    "In their early years as part of the DPS, Rangers were furnished a Colt .45 and a lever action Winchester .30 caliber rifle by the state. Rangers had to provide their own car, horse, and saddle, though the DPS issued horse trailers and paid automobile mileage."

    Bummer. You'd think Utah at least would issue a John Browning design. I'm a little disappointed to see my Wyoming HP carries a Glock. At least it's not a 9mm. Oh well, they're cheap and they usually fire when you squeeze the thingy on the bottom.

    one time I asked a small town policeman in NC about his carry sidearm. (I was attempting to divert his limited attention from the fact that I had, indeed, been traveling at a high rate of speed through his town)

    he was carrying a 40 cal and I asked him why the larger cal. 9s were the rage back then and he told me that he had been dispatched to kill a cat that had been mauled by a lawnmower and needed to be put out of his misery. He says he walks over and fires three 9mm rounds into the cat at which point the cat decided to get up and run to his distraught owner...three more shots and the cat expired with most of his head gone.

    The old lady that owned a cat expressed her dismay to the chief at which time the dept sprung for new 40cals!

    He probably put the first 3 shots into the stomach. I once saw a PA State Trooper do the same thing to a hit deer. He finally shot it in the head with his shotgun.

    March 2007 issue of Shooting Times had a nice article about the Texas Rangers, then and now. It states that over 70% of them now carry a Sig, most of them the P226 DAK, in 357 Sig.

    After all the training videos ive seen of late...we should go back to these...unless ur dealing with a guy with a guy with an ak47 or or some kind of fullauto..jam free [:p]

    This is what the Iowa State Patrol carried in 1965. This is my F.I.L.'s first duty revolver, and now it belongs to my wife. Cost me a arm and leg, but well worth it since her dad is gone now.

    last two indiana troopers that pulled me over were wearing glocks.
    for some reason after they find out about my permit, they arent real talkative about guns. i usually ask them what they got, model and caliber. the ones that pull me over usually give me a none of your business, or that shouldnt concern you unless you make me use it.
