I've no problem with anyone of any gender in any job as long as they are able to perform the job duties. So if a woman wants to be an officer, and is held to the same physical performance standards, and she can do it, let her. Heck, let her be a firefighter, a Marine grunt, or whatever else... as long as she is physically capable. 0 -
I agree 100%. On that same note, I've seen MEN who were too "small" to be a good cop. They shouldn't be cops either. Or if they are too FAT! [}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)]

I\'ve met and worked with women cops that could kick the crap out of a grizzly. I don\'t have a problem with that! On the other hand, I\'ve met and worked with women cops and male cops for that matter, that couldn\'t take on a fly with a fly swatter. I DO have a problem with that. 0 -
It is good to say that if they can physically handle the work then let them at it.
When I was a Paramedic we did not have a test of physical strength prior to hiring and we began hiring female medics. Wound up with about 10 of them, most of those were part time.
I know that at least five of these girls DROPPED the STRETCHER with a patient on it. Right there, unqualified to be a medic. Go to LPN school and work in the hospital, honey, you can't cut it out in the streets.
Of course no female ever got fired because she was physically incapable of doing the job.
I have seen some little female cops that look quite incapable of handling themselves in a physical confrontation.0 -

I have had many work for me. I have absolutely no problem with them due to sex. Being a cop is not about who is the biggest and strongest. I also treat them exactly the same as the men. This is how it is supposed to work. The % of good, average and bad ones is the same as the males. Thats a fact and that 31 years experience. 0 -
I totally disagree. Some of the best officers at defusing hazardous situations before they become violent are women. When dealing with domestic abuse issues, I'm going to want a woman officer present to handle the females involved in the issue. This here is a fact: women involved in domestic abuse situations are much less likely to trust a male officer responding to the scene enough to talk to them honestly about what happened.
There are some tough women officers out there, and they are a valuable asset to their departments.0 -
I'm speaking of the environment I live and worked in...
40 years ago the qualifications had most to do with physical attributes - male, age, weight, height and minimal education.
Today it's education, aptitudes, mental stability, life experiences, personal accomplishments, life style and physical fitness.
Females were first hired in the early 70's and had limited roles, wore a skirt and carried their sidearm in a shoulder bag (purse). Many believed they had no place in policing. Today they are found in all policing capacities and at every rank level. The former Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police (7000 strong) for about 8 years was a female - retired about a year ago.0 -
The bottom line is that there should be a strict set of qualification criteria that apply to everyone. If you can meet the qualifications you are in. If not, see ya. The problem in a lot of PDs, FDs, and the US Military is that females get a pass on much of the requirements. Take the USAF for example: Male flight candidates must be able to do 10 pullups in an alloted time. Females simply have to hang from their arms without doing even one. Males must be a certain height to pilot big planes. Females get booster seats and elevated foot pedals.
As to PDs and FDs, we owe a responsibility to the public to be able to perform certain tasks in an emergency situation. How would you like to be in a fight with a 300 pound bruiser and have your backup turn out to be a 100 pounder? Been there. Watch a few episodes of "Cops" in which females are in on arrests of violent offenders. The men are the ones wrestling the guy to the ground and cuffing him while the female is on her radio or taking notes.0 -

Seriously, all joking aside, I feel they can do just as good a job as males do, and I have seen them do it. While most wont be the point man on a SWAT entry team, I have known some who were excellent shoots, and some who made good snipers. I have also known many, and work with a few who are excellent Detectives, and Investigator's.

I have no personal experience but I have read that a good female cop can often defuse a bad situation faster and more effectively than their male counterparts.
Makes good sense to me.
Men apparently respond better to a calm woman's voice in extreme emergencies; ie. danger/warning recordings in military jets, etc.

Having 13 years experience as a street cop myself, I have seen some female cops that I wouldn't trust to fight a smurf. They had poor shooting skills, poor driving skills and usually were the first ones to holler for back-up over a hang nail. On the other hand, I have seen some female cops that were bad ass, jam-up cops that didn't take crap from anybody and could hold their own against much larger and stronger men. Regardless of sex, if you can do the job at hand, then far be it from me to stop you. Women have a definite role in Law Enforcemnt, finding the right woman for the right role is the hard part. 0 -
I know a female trooper, and she's small(about a buck twenty). She has a strong fear of getting too close. She knows that she cannot go hand-to-hand, and has to take precautions so it never happens.
She has some really nice busts though(har har). She will tell the bad guys that she's going back to her car to write a warning, and call in the cavalry.
Her biggest problem seems to be earning the trust of her male counterparts.

I have to say "No" to your question as I have worked with some females who were good cops. I have also worked with some who would drive around the block to keep from having to get out on a disturbance before back-up got there.
Now, most of the problems I have with female officers is the way the male officers act around them or treat them. It pains me to no end to see a male officer go all goo-goo eyed over a female officer especially if that male officer is a lt. or sgt. and is in a position to afford the female officer favors. I have less respect for the male officers that do that than I do for the females who actually use it to their advantage.
