should I sell or keep my rifles?
I have two rifles, a 1973 Marlin 30-30 and a early 80's Remington 700 in .270. Both are in good condition, even though the Marlin has some pitting on the end of the barrel. I used the Remington this past hunting season with good success, but I'm thinking I want a .308 or something else.
I really like the feel of the Marlin because of the lever action. I don't know why, but I'm not a great bolt-action kinda guy. I figured I could get a couple hundred for the Remington as a trade-in, and keep the Marlin. It may not be in the best shape, but it shoots straighter than the Remington IMO.
On the one hand, I have a nagging voice in my head that says never ever never ever sell a firearm. Why not keep it and have more than you need? On the other hand, if I'm really not loving it and could use it as a good trade, why not?
So.....y'all help me out and think for me. [:D]

I have only sold one gun also. It was a Winchester 1300 12 ga. I sold it in order to buy my 1979 Remington 870 Wingmaster in 99% condition.

As long as you sell or trade only to get another, its OK. Consider the Rem trade as an upgrade, keep the Marlin... its a zero sum loss, so its OK if you get something you like better.
You just can't sell to pay for some less important use, like paying income taxes, kid's college eductaion, etc.0 -
I have only ever sold two of my personal firearms. A Ruger Security Six stainless stell .357 and a Mossberg 500 12 ga. If I ever see them again I will buy them back. Yes, guns are an investment, but I just can't bring myself to sell them (my personal ones). 0 -

I dont think I would have a problem selling the Remington, But a lever...never. 0 -
I like the Marlin and I have killed a couple of deer with one. The one thing I dislike is that, in order to unload it, you have to rack every shell through the action.
It sure is easy on my Mauser sporter to pop that floor on the bottom of the magazine and take all the shells out.

I agree with this, I made the mistake of selling a Glock to get money to pay a motorcycle...REGRET IT!!!
Sold a Kimber that I was not happy with, got a nice Springfield 1911 with extra mags/holster, etc. HAPPY!!!0 -

No, kidding, I have another voice in my head that warns me ab out that, too. Am I paranoid? I really do worry about an invasion or uprising one day. Not that I'm prepared yet, but I'd rather have a lever-action that holds more ammo than the bolt-action.

Why is that? How come we like lever-actions so much? I really don't know what it is or why, but it just feels right over bold-action.

I guess I am against the grain,..there is no way on god's green earth I would ever keep a wimpy 30-30 over a rem700 in any hunting caliber. lever guns are slow and cluncky to cycle and can't handle pressures like bolt guns. That 270win properly loaded will outperform a 30/30 lever gun on it's worst day. Not to mention,..you can ALWAYS sell a rem700.
if you just have to have the lever gun,..then just go buy a 3rd rifle and be done with it.

Bolt .270 = 600 yards.
don't sell. Different weapons = better prepared.
Save money..add to the collection.
Besides..you will find your interests change, as time goes on..and that 200 dollar Remington 'on a trade' will cost you 450 dollars to buy back.0 -

True, but I have NO WHERE around here that I plan on shooting anything at 600 yards. Everything is within the range of my .30-30.0 -
I've sold a few to fund others.
I'm not going to do that any more. I miss all of 'em. Even the Remington 597. (Hey, it could shoot!)

Why whould you ask a gun forum if you should sell a GUN? You know what the awnser will be. So just like everybody else said keep them AND buy a new one. Just because you don't make 600 yard shots doesn't mean you can't have one that will. 0 -

That was a brave statement. Now go say that over in the leverguns forum.[:0] I suppose it depends on where you are hunting and what you grew up with, but I totally agree with you statement. Don't get me wrong, the .30-30 piled up deer back in the day(and still does), but it is definitely a wimpy cartridge as compared to many others out there today. Give me a choice between the two and I will take the bolt-action over the lever anyday(and yes I owned a 45/70 levergun a while back), but my brother is just the opposite. Just a difference in opinion I guess.

I would keep both of your guns and save up for a new one if I was you. If you are looking to trade, neither one is going to bring you much value(at least as far as what they are worth to you). On the other side, if you absolutely hate one of your guns, or you know that you are not going to use it anymore then what good is it to have it sit there and collect dust? Hope this helps.
