Mechanic question
Does anyone know the socket/nut size of the front wheel bearing nut on a '92 Olds Bravada? I'd assume it's likely the same as a similar year model Chevy Blazer. My socket set has disappeared.

First of all this sounds like a warrenty situation, if it is you shouldn't be doing anything. they can probably fix it in one visit.
If it isn't warrenty then starting from the cheapest thing, check the voltage coming from the alternater should be about 15volts.
next check the battery terminals are tight and that the battery has water in it and producing proper voltage. if your using a motor that has higher compression the starting system may be to small.
next the ground wire, take it off clean the wire, clean any paint on the frame, make sure its tight. still same way, change the ground wire, make sure its big enough.change the one from the battery to the bendix, and the wire from the starter to the frame.
next make sure all belts are tight and properly alligned.
Next check the starter for allignment, shim away from the flywheel, easy job, just loosen up the starter and shim it out about .010 that should tell you if its to tight.
next take the starter off and have it checked.
I think thats the normal dumb-arsed things we sometimes do.

Check your ground cable after trying to start it.
If it feels hot, the starter is dragging OR the cable/ground strap on the block isn't grounded correctly.
It also sounds like a warranty item, take it back.0 -
I own one of these and if you have the 5.0, check the dist. cap. If it has corrosion on the terminals inside the cap, you just found your problem. The Z71's are known for this problem with the distributors and caps. Whats happening is your cap is crossfiring and changing the timing therefore making it hard to start. My truck did this a few weeks ago. I checked everything before finding this problem. Email me if this fixes your problems. Mike. 0 -

starter might need to be shimed especially if it's the 2 bolt type too tight against the flywheel

If the clearance on the starter isn't correct, it will drag and make the noise everytime. bamafan didn't say anything about a noise, and said it doesn't do it everytime.0 -
Check the timing on the engine. It sounds like it is too far advanced. 0 -

I didn't consider that but it stands to reason especially if it is warm when it is hard to start and starts fine when the engine is cool0 -

The timing on that engine is set by the computer, and doesn't use the distributor pickup to run the engine at all. It uses the crankshaft sensor located on the bottom of the timing cover. The sensor in the distributor is only to determine which cylinder is misfiring. Turning the distributor won't change the timing.0 -
A friend of mine mentioned that it might be the timing, but I don't think that is it. So I will go through all the grounding issues, and them try to shim out the starter if I have to. Thanks for all the info. I'll let ya'll know what I find out. 0 -
I would not be the first time an old starter is too weak for a new engine. 0 -

Was thinking along the same lines. Was gonna try all the cheap routes first.0 -

Look for a loose ground wire if none found Suspect that the starter does not enough power to crank new engine over.
Was this a new engine or just a lower mileage used engine?
from the sound of your problem I would guess that you have a loose ground. Check all of the connections on the strarter it is very easy to miss one of those wires when hooking up the wiring harness[;)]
there should be two grounds, one to the frame and one to the engine0
