Counting change back?...
Stopped for gas....got 20 bucks worth and a coffee...bill was 21.30....and its all prepay for gas so I still hadnt pumped yet...
Handed the guy a 100.00 bill...change was 78.70....I watched him take the twenties, five and the ones, in that order so the ones are on top when they hand you the change....
I told him "Please count it back" and refused to take the change...He looked totally ticked off, gave a huge sigh and looked at the register....Said, "your change is 78 dollars and 70 cents"...Counted 20, 40, 50, 55, 56, 57, 58 dollars and 70 cents...I looked at him, he looked at the register and counted it again....he had shorted me 20 bucks..
I dont know if it was deliberate or not but its so easy done...they dont count the change back and if you give a large bill, the change alwayss has the smallest bills on top, so you dont see what is there really.... get them to count it back...Go to the manager and tell them, to tell the employees to count the change back...
It only takes a second more than just handing it to the customer ....
When did it stop?...and more importantly, why did it stop?..0 -
You need to realize that some people that work for gas stations (and other common service establishments)are of questionable character. They work at those kinds of places because they often cannot get hired anywhere else. It may have been done on purpose and after the cashier shorted you, they would go back later and pocket the $20. People like that usually get caught after a while but until the owner or manager catches them, several people can be victimized. You should always check to make sure you get the proper change and having them count back your change is a good way to prevent that from happening.
I once pumped gas and went inside to pay with cash. I noticed the clerk had the register drawer open and never rang up the sale and just gave me my change back. I suspected he was doing that to embezzle money from his boss. I called the local cops and asked them to notify the store owner as I was not from the area.0 -
Pay at the pump and use a credit card. No ripoffs, and you don't have to stand in line. 0 -
Ill tell you exactly why they dont count your change back to you. Its because they make less than 8 bucks an hour. Why should they care? I know your supposed to take pride in whatever you do, but for less than 8 bucks an hour, you get what you get. 0 -
it's a lost art, like thankyou or your welcome or opening a car door for a lady or the man walking on the road side of the sidewalk. the list goes on 0 -

Holy crap.
When I was dating my wife, she could not fathom why I would open doors for her, why I would pay for our dates, why I insisted on walking on the road-side of the sidewalk. She sat there and said where she came from (small town Wisconsin), NOBODY did that. NOBODY. In fact, she never HEARD of anyone doing it.
I had to explain to her that my mother raised me this way, and if she had ever caught wind that I acted in a manner other than the one I acted in, she would read me the Riot Act.
I still get some strange looks when I open doors for women. I guess chivalry really is dead.0 -
I went to the Kroger with my girlfriend. She bought $7 plus worth of stuff. She paid with a $20.
The clerk did not count the change. He handed her some bills and coins, and the receipt was wrapped around the bills, so you could not see them well. She took the money without looking, and put it in her purse.
I smelled a rat. We just got outside the door, and I told her to give me the money. There were two ones and some coins.
The rascal at the cash register had gypped her out of $10!
We went back inside, got the manager, confronted the cashier who of course denied it. There were about 6 customers in line. I am a big guy, I started talking real loudly about how sad it was that a cashier would DELIBERATELY cheat a customer out of ten bucks. I made sure those customers heard me.
The manager closed the register and began counting the money, but, of course, the cashier had already had five minutes to hide the bill.
Anyway we got our money back but there is zero doubt in my mind that this cashier did it on purpose.0 -
This is the main reason why I use credit cards. I don't worry about having to carry around enough cash and I don't have to worry about being ripped off by some sleazeball at the cash register.
You just have to be able to pay off the credit card at the end of the month.0 -

I never have more than $5 in my wallet. I ALWAYS deposit my pay-checks, and use a debit-card.If i buy something or try to, and they have no POS machine, i put the item/s back, and shop elsewhere.0 -
damn, i'll start counting mine now, thanks BR 0 -

Well that's a sucky attitude. No wonder America is in moral decay.
Me, me, me, me, me... and me!0 -
I think a lot of it has to do with many of the store clerks dont have the ability to count the change.. Try going to the grocery and put your hand over the window on the machine that tells the clerk what change to give back, can you say confusion. Sometimes I ask the clerk of they take Federal Reserve Notes for payment? 99% of the time their answer is no, we take money....[:(] 0 -
I will deliberatly count my return money if the line is going up the aisle while holding firm ground in front of the cashier. Banks are even doing it. Just giving you a wad of bills for cashing a check. I stand at the teller and count out the bills. Always. 0 -
it's because the people that run convenient stores are stupid and the only reason they are there is because of the tax break!!! LOL
not really but haven't you ever noticed when you give the poor girl at sonic a penny or a nickle, to make up the change, they get all confused?!?! it really is sad!
they should teach kids the art of making change a little better in our schools. maybe they can review what they learned in 2nd grade, each year.... i mean, what percentage of kids don't go to college and end up counting our change out to us at mcdonalds or alike?!?!
i know i've counted my fair share. [:)]
the review might work in other areas as well.. look at the show, "are you smarter than a 5th grader".0 -
I agree with Roses.
I always count my change in line now. I always use cash, because I refuse to use credit cards. I count my change even if I am at the bank teller. Try driving off from a bank window before counting it only to find you have been shorted. You will never get a refund. I used to work part time at a Dick's Sporting Goods, and a local Gander Mountain, and many times I saw cashiers there short change customers. It didn't appear they were doing it intentionally, I think they were just miss counting the change. Several times I myself miscounted, and when I discovered the customer over paid, I would go out of my way to get them their refund. I caught up with them in the store, walking through the mall, or chased them down through the parking lot. What ever it took, I tried to ensure the customer got their money back. You take the time to make things right in the long run the customer will remember.

The real reason is that now the calulations are made by a computerized cash register and it tells the clerk to return $3.18 change, they are not taught in school (as I was) nor by the employer (as I was again) to count change back. They grab something close to $3.18 and move on. Time is money.
In those days prices included shipping and handling. Now you pay shipping, handling, tape and foam surcharges, and a profit on all of that as well as the product you bought.0 -
Another place you want to check your money is the ATM. I had a friend
at work tell me about his brother being short changed $20 from the
ATM. Believe it or not, a couple weeks later I was short changed $20
at the bank's ATM. Called customer service and told them my problem.
In a week I had $20 credited to my account. It happens.0 -
Want to totally screw them up, if your purchase was 11.50, and you want to avoid a bunch of $1 bills, give them $21.50 and watch their head start to spin like a top. I have to keep too much "stuff" in my wallet and don't like it getting fat so I try to tender the currency that will result in less volume whenever possible and sometimes the clerk really gets an attitude, even though they can just put in what I give and the register will tell them what to give me back.
Plus, I agree with Spanielsells, I use credit cards whenever possible, just to avoid having to deal with too much currency. It does require some self discipline to pay it off each month so you don't pay interest but truly is a great tool if used properly.0 -
Cash???? You guys pay with cash??? I never have more than $10 on me at any time, I use a card for everything anymore. 0 -
I do not use credit cards at gas stations...I use cash....and if you watch the news programs or any consumer advocate programs you will only use cash as well...

and that is BULL!!!
I know ppl here that make less than 7 bucks an hour and are more honest than someone makeing 20....This doesnt just happen at Gas Stations, it happens in any store, high end or otherwise...0 -
I too shun cash and checks. I got a free trip to europe last year (well the airfare) from my credit card for using it so much. I probably put close to $1k on it a month, and pay it off every month, unless there is some unexpected expense. I also have gotten a free plasma TV and several free gas/restaurant cards by cashing in my Citibank rewards ($1 for each dollar spent, but bonus bucks too- like at the grocery store you get $3 in rewards for every dollar spent).
Agreed though- when I worked on a primitive register, say the bill was $26.17 and someone gave me $30- it would go like such:
"That's $26.17, (add 3 pennies), $26.20, (add a nickle) $26.25, (add 3 quarters) $27.00, one two and three is $30." Count up.
It did get harder when someone would give, say, $30.02 to avoid the pennies. $30.17 I could handle but smaller calculations were harder.0 -
Both my wife and I do not use credit cards. I am trying to teach my kids to do the same. I only carry what cash I need. I do have a debit card I'll use when in need for cash, but it is like writting a check most of the time, and I try not to use it as a credit card. Most of the time I write checks. If the place will not accept written checks I will not shop there.

Geez, How do you rent a car? I use credit and debit card all the time, write checks only to pay for dinosaurs, and pay the balance in full each month. Like Jonk, I use cards that rebate and just got two Surefire flash lights (sure not paying cash for those overpriced puppies!) and other stuff, including plane tickets. 0 -
He Dog,
For the most part I never rent a car. I usually use my own transportation. I work for the Federal Government, so if I am on a business trip I do use my Government Impact Credit card. However, it gets paid off as soon as the bill comes in. For personal purchases I seldom use plastic, and I don't even have a card other than a debit card. Like the commercial says, Using plastic is just feeding the PIG!

I can remember we spent weeks learning how to do that in grade school 0 -

Maybe this was already mentioned but, when they stared lowering the requirement to get a passing grade in school to "level the playing field" for certain people who felt it was politically incorrect to expect a high standard?? Simply, you don't have to know 1+1=2 to get the diploma. You just have to be within our borders.0 -
