Feedback blackmail
I notice some sellers say "Be kind in the feedback you give me, for I give what I get." Somehow that translates to me to say, no matter how quick & good you pay & no matter how bad I perform, if you don't praise me I'll fix you. Some peoples thought processes are indeed something else. And to say it up front, unbelieveable. Personally I don't give those folks any bids. We know buyers think its a crock, but I bet we hear from sellers defending the practice. Some even go into a rage when jumped about it. Pity.

Dear roveman: You are so right. One seller has already threatened me. I also know that generally sellers are a protected species no matter what. Fortunately 98% of them are real good people. But that other 2% are???. Yes, I know some buyers are also less than choir boys. Ain't life wonderful. 0 -
I had the same thing happen to me on both fleabay and the gun auctions. Some of these guys think they can intimidate & coorse you into geting a better deal, by threating you with negative feedback. I wouldn't put up with it! I told them to take a flying f**k at a rolling donut. 0 -
I have paid quick and good for all I got , BUT , It did take the action of GB and 4 months to get one piece I bought and one Item I paid for never did get, But I did get 2 bad feedbacks out of the deal. And I was the one shafted.
But it boils down to the seller and his fees paying that is the winner on all auctions.
Bidders are a nuisance

Reminds me , where does all the parts sellers selling there parts since Epay ran them off?
I dont see them on GB or anywhere else?
Got any clues?
There was a lot of Winchester pieces coming out of Canada for a while.

basically bidders forget, the world doesnt revolve around them at AUCTIONS.
maybe in the customer/retail world, but not on auctions.
basically, you follow seller rules and if something isnt right, you talk to each other, rectify the matter, then use feedback lastly. most bidders today open their shipping box, cry foul, get on the website and screw the seller before he even has a chance to recitify the matter. then, afterwards, they realize its a mistake but sometimes too late. gb is good about giving feedbackers the option to rethink it after a while and upgrade and repost it for 30 days. it comes in handy.
if a seller makes a mistake, you call him and try to fix it. you grade him on how he fixed it. everyone makes mistakes. not everyone fixes them. good people do. bad people dont.
how you respond is what the seller is looking for in his feedback. thus, you be nice , he's nice. youre not, he's not. fair is fair.0 -
Dear troopertyree. You said a mouthful. Some of what bobski says is true, it obviously don't revolve around the non commission paying buyer, & I agree some buyers are skunks, but I think bobski somewhat missed my basic point. Its the old saw I guess, I know what I wrote but I don't know what the reader reads. That too is a given. 0 -
i know what yorue saying,
what i found to work best is....if you dont have something nice to say, dont say anything. that goes for both sides.
but if after you TALKED WITH HIM and TRIED TO FIX THE PROBLEM he still refused to cooperate...you nail him to warn others.
and then..he nails you.
see? its best not to even bother. or what i'd do is mark it as postive A+ and write out the gripe with it. then he cant complain, you gave him an a+![;)]0 -

That's sneaky! I'll have to try it.0 -
Dear bobski: I hear you, thats why in a way feedback is a joke in the first place. When good people deal with each other they always do whats right, and thats most of us. Some sellers are also against the feedback blackmail game and say right up front they won't engage in it. God bless them. Another thing that bugs me is when an item is not truthfully described. Example, "New in the Box", it was in the box alright, with a busted firing pin and half of the chambers loaded. But to give seller benefit of the doubt, he might have got it that way & failed to notice that it wasn't what he thought it to be. Cold hard fact was fixing it was cheaper than, paying a restocking fee, more shipping & well anyway fortunately out of several hundred buys that has only happened twice, inaccurate descriptions that is. 0 -
Now that is why I joined Angie's List, so I could leave feedback on places. I have left negative and good feedback on the list so far. Dealership I bought my car from had a A feedback, I left him an F as he sold me a lemon and did nothing to rectify the situation. 0 -
i was given bad feedback by a seller who lied about description of item and wouldn,t even talk to me after i tried to contact him for 2 weeks, after recieving item. 0 -
Feeback is used incorrectly, and it is used to blackmail the other party into leaving good feedback. We had an example on the forum a while back, gone over in detail, and one of our members did the same thing.
If you are the buyer, your job is to pay for the item timely, and include any necessary documents. If you do that, you deserve good feedback. So, now you paid, and you got the item, and it was not as described, or there is some other problem. You try to work it out with the seller and he is no help, so you beef him on feedback. Now, the seller goes back and changes his positive feedback to negative, when nothing about your part of the transaction has changed. That's just wrong.0 -
Dear Nunn: Right on, you said a mouthful. Now this describes a tricky seller. After blocking me and threatening me with bodily harm for objecting to his feedback attitude he changes his handle (which somehow removed the block). Had a hard time tracking him, but changing his handle didn't change his E-mail address, so I still could home in and ogle his feedbacks; I however have blocked him & haven't changed my handle so he remains blocked. Seems fair. 0 -
i agree Nunn that is what happened to me. 0 -
If you know of a seller who has had his account terminated, and who has re-registered, PLEASE go to the Help link on the home page and report the seller in a support issue. 0 -
This happens on the big auction site all the time. The call it retaliatory feedback. That's why most sellers will set up two accounts. One for buying and one for selling. Using your buyers account, If you have a problem with a seller you can leave neg feedback and when they retaliate it will not effect your sellers account. Which is where the feedback really counts. 0 -
My feeling is that if you sell under 50 items a year, it is just buyer/seller business as usual both parties leave feedback. If you sell over 50 (career sellers), then the seller should not be allowed to leave feedback and only the buyer.
Why? Because as a career seller buyers have a right to know what you are all about. Feedback extortion in almost every case benefits the seller and not the buyer. Other buyers could not care less what other buyers feedback is, but they do want to know what a seller is all about. If you do it for a living, you should have mechanisms in place for the VERY few bad buyers. Essentially the career sellers need to learn to DEAL WITH the infrequent bad buyers!
It is not fair that bad sellers, of which there are many more than bad buyers, get away with shenanigans due to feedback extortion.0 -

Why is it, that you would leave feedback HALF WAY THROUGH a transaction? There are a myriad of problems that can develop AFTER payment is made. Not all these problem are the sellers fault.
Feedback should be given at the CONCLUSION of a transaction. When the seller has received payment, sent the item, AND the buyer has received the item, and is happy with it. If the buyer has a problem with the item, once he receives it, it is still an ONGOING TRANSACTION. Is it not???
I agree, not so sure being able to change feedback is a good thing. Some use this in a negative manner.0 -
If a seller states that he will give good feedback, if he gets good fedback... I see that as blackmail too.
You can't trust feedback from a person like that, as no matter how praised he is - it's likely just so, because the buyers don't want bad feedback themselves.
A person like that ein't getting ANY feedback from me.. if he then posts bad feedback on me... I'll teach him and mention my points of view on how he runs his things.0 -
Dear Nunn & others: I thank you for all your participation on the subject and will now leave my final comment on the matter. Regarding the seller that sparked all this & changed his handle; I've reviewed his feedbacks, they are all positive & don't appear to have been coerced at all. Maybe his policy is relatively recent?? In any case for some unknown reason he has 14 items currently for sale with experation times of 1 to 5 days. He has not a single bid on any of them. Maybe a coincedence or there may be a correlation relating to his published feedback policy. Puzzling to say the least, or maybe not? Anyway, again, thanks to all of you for your comments. 0 -
It goes without saying. The natural law or golden rule of things. To actually say it is in poor taste however.

I like the option of being able to change feedback.
I bought a part, couldn't make it fit, but decided to keep it for another project. But shipping had been quick, so I posted a B and wrote a note about the part being poorly described. Later I tried the part again, and it worked perfectly; the problem was the buyer's (my) ignorance, not the seller's. So I went back and changed the B to an A+ and edited the comment.0 -
Lets look at this different too.
I need input here.
Say I sell something on GB, a part. say its a mauser part.
I dont tell in the auction wheather it is for a large mauser or small. short or long just a mauser part.
The auction has plenty of pictures to see and also in the auction it states " SOld as is Only".
BUT I do answer all emails asking which is it for, and tell it honestly and say its for a small ring.
So the bidding and questions go on and it finally ends ,
and is paid with a Pay pal.
and is shipped to buyer which has never asked any questions yet.
After 3 or 4 days I get and email and it states that the buyer is sending the part backe because " it does not fit his mauser" and I can issue him a redit or he will stop payment on the CC.
So who is in the wrong here and waht would you do if you were the seller unders these conditions.
Would love to here from you.
Thank you

That is a good way to get them mad too. Some buyers or seller will have a hissy fit if you don't leave ANY feedback.0 -
I think that feedback should be kept hidden until both sides enter their comments. If only one side has entered a comment the neither gets one except if it's a negative. Then I think that in 30 days a one sided neg comment should display. 0 -
Pickenup: givette here. It's because the buyer has completed his obligation halfway through the transaction.
It is not the buyer's responsibility to make sure a product is shipped in a satisfactory manner, or that the product is as advertised. No way for the buyer to know ahead of time.
It's the buyers responsibility to pay in full in a timely manner, and to make sure he [the buyer] is legal to receive the item.
Buyer's responsibility is done after payment is made satisfactorily. That's when buyer should receive feedback from seller.
Sellers responsibility is done after he makes a reasonable effort to ship the product in a timely fashion after receipt of funds, and that the product is as advertised. The seller should receive feedback after the goods arrive at the destination. Long after the buyer held up his end of the transaction, and received feedback.
If damage/loss incurs, and the seller took pains to package/address correctly, then it has to be resolved through the shipper. Buyer should still get an A+ regardless because the buyer did everything he was supposed to do (and seller be given time to make good on the deal). Best, Joe0 -
I think I know what the answer to this will be....but here goes anyway....
What do you guys think about a seller giving bad feedback to a buyer who leaves bad feedback?
If the transaction goes as planned and all is paid for on time...the buyer is covered. He (or she) is due some good feedback.
THEN.....the buyer decides they aren't happy. Lets just say the item is sold for A PENNY WITH NO RESERVE and the item is listed with detailed pics. The buyer is completely responsible for bidding on an item that everything is upfront about.....
Why should a seller feel they have to play "high school" games when it comes to feedback. People think the sellers are untouchable...but Gun Broker does not remove these feedbacks from the seller's name (even though there is plenty of evidence that the feedback is undeserved.)
I'm not complaining....it just appears that the scales are tipped toward the buyer getting shafted...when it goes both ways at times.0
