How much ammo for a "rainy day"?
Just out of curiousity, how much ammo do you guys recommend keeping on hand in case of "troubles"?
I used to have a pretty decent supply (7000-8000, of various types), as ammo was cheap and I didn't have much else to spend money on at the time.
Having been poor for the last few years, I've shot out most of my supply, but I still keep a few hundred "just in case" rounds sealed up in an ammo can.......
Hopefully I can afford to stock back up at some point

The irony is that I almost never shoot anymore, and I have so much ammo I pretty much never even reload these days. I do just like having the cool toys though.0 -
I keep 1500 rounds of rifle (3 different calibers 308 win,30/06, 5.56 ),500 rounds of pistol (3 different calibers 45 acp,9mm,357 mag),250rds of slugs and 500rounds of buck shot 12 ga.so the total of 6750 rounds total. Plus all of my reloading supplies. I hope I will never need it!If I do god help the sob because no one else will. 0 -

Why 1k per gun? A man can only use 1 at a time....2 if you count a side arm.
Why not keep, for example, 2 or 3 thousand rounds for guns you actually might depend on?
Buying up 1000 .410 or .25 seems doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me. For that matter, nor does having several ammo cans of 30-30.0 -
I was just at a local consignment auction and picked up 6000 rounds ss 109. I won the bid on choice (1000 rounds per ammo can) I took all 6 cans for---don't be mad 25.00 per can. Most of the people at the sale didn't know what 5.56 was. The label on the cans read"62 grain ss 109 m855". Nobody knew that this ammo was and I think some even thought I was half nuts buying it all. I told on man that was questioning me if I even owned a gun that would shoot this ammo that I wish They had 100 cans because I would have bought all that to.[:D] 0 -
I can hardley come up with a number but in the area that most of my guns are there is probably 2000 rnds of various handgun ammo and maybe 8000 rnds of rifle shells. various cals. 0 -

I understand where you're coming from with that.
I am not looking for a certain number of each type of round. I doubt I will ever need to have 1000 rounds of .44 magnum to feed my lone 629 mountain gun.
I would guess I have at least a few hundred rounds of .44 on hand though, but I'm just a packrat, I'm not waiting on a Dave vs. the end of the world zombie infestation and I am down to my left handed .257 Weatherby Magnum to save myself with.
I also have a .300 Win Mag, I'll go the rest of my life and never put 100 rounds through that gun, so each bullet gets made for it, and usually in small quantities, if and when I shoot the thing (IT HURTS!!)
1000 rounds of a lot of things is just simply very space consuming. I probably have 20 different calibers (just a guess). I have lots of ammo, but I'll never have a certain number of any round because some wizards of gunbroker agree that there is a "right" number or a minimum that you must keep on hand.0 -
HERE IS SOME THING OFF THE WALL WHEN THE "Y2K" BS GOING AROUND I LIVED IN ALABAMA AND MY FAMILY OWNED A GUN SHOP. WITH THE SCARE OF ALL THINGS COMMING TO THE END THE "NATIVE POPULATION" WAS JUST LOOKING FOR A REASON TO RIOT.THAT NIGHT MYSELF AND MY BROTHER-IN-LAW SPENT THE NIGHT AT OUR SHOP. ON THAT NIGHT I HAD A GLOCK 21 WITH 5 HI-CAPS AND A SPRINGFIELD M1A WITH 10 MAGS LOADED UP AND A 12 GA RIOT SHOTGUN LOADED WITH BUCKSHOT. OUR SHOP NEVER DID HAVE A PROBLEM BUT A GUN SHOP ACROSS TOWN WAS HIT AND THE OWNER AND OFF DUTY POLICE OFFICER WAS KILLED WHEN 4 MALES BROKE IN AND GUN FIGHT TOOK PLACE.BASICALLY TRYING TO SAY THE ONLY GUN AND AMMO YOU WILL HAVE IS THE ONE IN YOUR HAND NOTHING ELSE MATTERS! 0 -
For rainy days I try to keep 1k of ammo per rifle and 500 pistol on the main guns. This is as low as my stock gets. I usually keep quit a bit of reloading supplies for other cals I shoot like .243, .30-30, .357, .44 ect. The stock on those will depend how long it has been since I loaded but I have about 500+ brass as I load in "lots" when I get low. .22 I keep crazy amounts on hand as it is cheep and easy to store.
Another reason I "stock" up is price. I am still shooting 7.62x39 that I bought for $65/k. People made fun of me over the amounts I bought now I make fun of them paying $160/k [^]. If I could have afforded it I would have bought 10x as much.

i have 5 guns that are registered and one packet of ammo for each one that is locked in my police approved safe[;)]hoarding ammo is frowned upon here!...law says there is a limit on how much we can have, but doesnt say how much it is[:0]it would not occur to me to hide ammo, that just wouldnt be right[:)] 0 -
about a box and a half of 410 #6 shot, but still have 1&1/2 months of squirrel season left by that time i should be about out. 0 -
500-1000 for your main long gun, ditto your main handguns, a few hundred shotgun shells in various shot sizes (for fowl hunting to home defense to hunting) 200-400 hunting rounds, 2500 .22s.
that should just about cover it. Anything above and beyond that is just extra insurance.0 -

Why would anyone need to keep more on hand they can physically pack with them in these times? If you were to shoot 2500+ rounds from the same location, everyone would know where you are. That being said, I keep several loaded magazines of 5.56, 7.62 x 39, and 9mm in separate carry bags with shoulder straps next to my safe. I have much more ammo stored for target practive but not in case of "troubles". If a couple of mags wont get you out of "trouble", you are screwed anyway (or a really bad shot). With every bullet you fire in "troubled" times, you should acquire at least 20 rounds from the "target" you hit.0 -

This makes the most sence to me .I have a few friends who will gather at a pre-determined "stronghold" and "slug-it-out" with the "ENEMY". If the "troubled-times" ever come.

How rainy is the day?
Worst case- post apocolyptic, pure anarchy. I have to defend myself, family, and freinds from looters, rioters, thugs, etc., plus hunt for food. Not to mention provide for my descendents.
Offhand I'd say 10k each of high power rifle ammo, shotgun ammo, and handgun ammo (or the components to assemble same), 50k of 22 ammo, about 100 pounds of black powder and 1000 pounds of pure lead, and plenty of percussion caps or flints.
At the moment I have nowhere near that- though I do approach 10k of centerfire rifle ammo.0 -

Great question:
Consider the use.
For hunting to keep some food around I would like about 300-400 rounds.
For protection 500-600 rounds for most weapons. If you need more than that you will probably not survive anyway. Katrina-type disorder should not require much ammo. Only the organized groups will survive longer than 30-60 days in severe troubles.

She even pick up old beat up firearm at the gunshop and give them to me to fix. What an woman.
