Sometimes, we gun owners hurt our own cause by adopting the language of the liberals, gun grabbers, and the liberal media.

An "assault rifle" is a carbine-length long arm, chambered for an intermediate power round, having a select-fire switch so that it can fire full-auto.

The M-16, M-4, and the real AK-47 are assault rifles. Any sort of semi-auto AR-15 or clone, or any sort of semi-auto AK are not.

The terms "assault shotgun" and "assault pistol" are even more ridiculous.

There is no such thing as a "high-capacity magazine." There are standard-capacity magazines, reduced-capacity magazines, and extended-capacity magazines. Even the language of the infamous 1994 Crime Bill did not use the term "high-capacity magazine." It called them "large-capacity ammunition feeding devices."

For example, the Glock 17, with a standard magazine, the one for which it was originally designed, holds 17 rounds. Also available, for the Commie states, are reduced-capacity 10 round magazines, as well as extended magazines holding 19 and 33 rounds.

If it is the magazine originally designed to go with that weapon, it is a standard capacity magazine. If it hangs out the butt in order to hold more, it is an extended or extra capacity magazine. And, if it has a block in it to reduce the capacity to satisfy some politician's agenda, it is a reduced capacity magazine.

Let's get it straight, people. Rant over.

DWS might take issue with this...[:D]

And while we are ranting---Let's stop calling sporting firearms "weapons". Sure, they can be used as weapons, but so can a stick or a car. I have an assault baseball bat in the garage.[:)]

Assault is an action. You can assualt a victim, not the weapon assaulting anything. It is the operator that takes an action, not the weapon. Weapons are tools, like a hammer or wrench.

I've always favored the phrase " Semi Automatic" Insert Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, name here.

And in my state if the phrase "Machine Gun" is used, the reply: "Nope, Them's illegal here unless your a FFL dealer" is appropriate.

Nunn should we re-explain "Clips vs. Magazines" while we're at it?

sorry guys, but there are weapons designed specifically to assault. just like there are weapons designed to defend.
thus, there are assault weapons out there.
case in point...you dont put a battering ram in the back of a truck....it goes up front. its designed to assault.
guns designed to assault are usually light, nimble, short bbl'ed, can be reloaded quickly, and have an overwelming rate of fire. they are designed to go forward to take an objective.

They are semi auto, or full auto loading rifles, nothing more nothing less!!!! The term assault rifle is a liberal term, and any self respected gun owner should take that terminology as an insult!!!

I HATE when people that claim to know a "thing or two" about firearms refer to these items as a "CLIP".
As far as i know a "CLIP" is used either to fill a "MAGAZINE" or jammed into the top of an "M1".

A Clip is not a Magazine!

One of the most misused terms in firearms is "Clip".
Depending on how you look at it, it is either amusing or pitiful that writers who consider themselves experts or authorities don't know the difference between a magazine and a Clip.

A Clip is a very different thing to a magazine and the terms are not interchangeable.
Saying "Clip" when you mean "magazine" is rather like talking about socks when you mean boots.

A magazine can be defined as a container of ammo. A room full of shells on a battleship is a magazine, and so was the Parthenon when it was used as a powder store.
In small arms terms magazine usually refers to a box, drum or tube with a spring inside to help feed the rounds. Magazines can be a fixed part of the weapon, or detachable. Most detachable magazines can be removed and replaced with a full one to reload the weapon, but there are guns such as the Lee Enfield where the magazine is only removed for cleaning, and is refilled by a different mechanism. (more of this in a moment).

The ammo Clip was invented in 1885 by Mannlicher and provided a way to place a full load of rounds into a magazine in one action. What many people do not appreciate is that the Clip also forms an integral part of the gun's mechanism. If the rounds are not held in a Clip the gun cannot go through the full cycle of chamber, fire and eject.

If a weapon is clip-loading you can't load it with loose ammo.

This is why the two terms should not be confused.
Firstly because the Clip actually fits inside a magazine. Some Clip-loading automatic cannon don't appear to have any magazine, the Clip slotting onto the top of the weapon and the rounds feeding down. For simplicity we'll restrict our discussion to small arms.
Secondly, when you say an arm is clip-loading you are describing a specific type of mechanism. When I say the Home defence shotgun should be a clip-loader, I'm specifying that it SHOUDN'T be capable of being loaded with loose rounds.
One of the most famous and widely used clip-fed weapons is the M1 Garand rifle. It may be the wide use of this weapon that has caused so many Americans to confuse reloads with Clips. You might argue that you can hand-load a single round into the chamber of a Garand and fire it, but you are performing the loading part of the firing cycle instead of the Clip, so the above definition still holds.

This one always rips me. "Gun Lobby". There is no damn "gun lobby". There is the anti-gun rights lobby, who are anti-Constitutional. We who are fighting for out rights under the Constitution do not need to "lobby" for our rights. Some traitors are trying to take them away, and we are fighting them. It's a negative term used by them and all their co-conspirators, news media, etc., and has taken on an aura of sinisterness to many. As the commies said, "tell a lie long enough and it becomes the truth." Just like "assault rifle", it has been meanieized to suit their evil intentions.

Re: use of the term "weapon". Some of us old retreaded military poops do NOT refer to "guns" other than machine guns, cannon, or shotguns (for those of you that missed the experience, watch Full Metal Jacket for an explanation- "this is my rifle and this is my gun!") We call it a rifle, a piece or a weapon. In any event, the hoplaphobes (unreasoning fear of an inaminate object) will continue to attempt to create emotionally loaded terms- such as Saturday Night Special, Plastic Gun, Assualt Pistol, Cop Killer Bullets, ad infinitum. While in the interest of preserving purity of language, I will readily agree that no selector= no assualt rifle, do not expect them to be swayed by accuracy of terminology. If it is black, it must be an evil assualt whatsis. Now if you will excuse me, did a round of sporting clays earlier today- I need to go clean my double barrel fully auto assualt streetsweeper shotgun. The Baker that was made in the early 1900s. [:p]

Well, actually 11b6r, guns and rifles are mounted on ships, but I don't try to push the point very often. The first time I ever saw the term "assault rifle" used was by a professional writer in one of those magazines like Soldier of Fortune. He was doing a report on a new H&K.

We ain't never going to stop the corruption of the English Language. The best we can do is watch our own usage to try to avoid being plutoed * by people who are familiar with the language.

*plutoed: (verb) to demote or devalue someone or something. (The American Dialect Society (ADS) 2006 word of the year)

Can I still use the term "Spray and Pray"?

Or "Once you go black, you never go back" when referring to the "black rifles"

and while we are at it, it grates my a$$ when a hunter says they harvested an animal - it ain't a friggn tomato to be picked - you shot and killed it so say "I killed 2 deer this weekend" for petes sake.

now if you are in a stand and a potato runs by, by all means harvest that bad boy to go with the grilled deer stakes from the dear you picked from the vine growing behind the house.

Choppa, is either an AK or a shotgun down here. Check Young Jeezy lyrics. There is a Young Jeezy song where he states, "i got a carbon 15 with a infrared scope on my K". HAHAHAHAH!

But i do refer to ak's as K's.

Actual conversation over a gun show table:

Boneheaded vato, pointing at a folding Kel-Tec carbine: "How many times will it shoot?

My reply: "Oh, probably 6 to 8 thousand before you wear it out."

The vatos and homeys seem to mostly be interested in magazine capacity, and nearly always ask. You can LOOK at a tubular magazine on a shotgun and have a pretty good idea of how many shells can be stuffed into it.

I had another conversation with another vato about the capacity of this same carbine. The carbine takes Glock 9mm magazines, so the capacity is determined by which magazine you put in. It can be 10, 17, or as many as 33. I couldn't get it across to him.
