Reminds me of a short documentary I saw in which a guy pays to get shot. It's all planned out to affect only soft tissue (right below the armpit, shot from the front, exiting out the back). The documentary captures the shooting. ("Ok, ready? On three. One..." BANG.) Shot with a revolver (S&W I think), .38 (but maybe .357), HP (I think). So you get to see the guy in all his bravado getting ready to get shot and then you get to see where he can't walk himself to the ambulance....which was waiting in advance. Pretty weird stuff.

My daughter had an obsession with putting stickers on her arms, etc. until she was about 3... I asked one of our anthro profs about it, and the history of body marking/decoration/modification, and he say's there just something "in" the human psyche that desires it to some degree.
As to the carving like that, well, there are always folks that go to extremes. Witness the .14 cal wildcats, the 577 t-rex, etc. This is just an example of an extreme, and what most folks would call nasty. But obviously 2 people thought it was ok....0 -
First of all, as a person who has had a load of flesh about the size of a quarter of what is displayed, and who is not much larger than the girl in question, I'm here to tell you, it makes a difference. That's an awful lot of flesh leftover. She's getting up and walking out without benefit of opates, she is not human, or this is not real. 0 -

This cant be legal can it? Incisions being made into the human body pretty much sums up needing an MD I think. Too wild. Infection? Any physician who took that much tissue would have prescribed antibiotics. What did they use to numb other than Papst Blue Ribbon? This is distressing. Someday this young lady will be a mother and grandmother. What the heck is she going to say about that. I'm sure she'll have a tendency to justify this in some way, but you have to know when she matures a little bit and gets a little older mentally and physically, this would have to be on the life regret list. 0 -

My daughter (grown, married, mother) got a tattoo on her back just above the waist. She tried to keep me from knowing about it, but forgot and bent over in front of me. I told her, "Nice piece of artwork on your back, just think, in about 20 years you'll be able to wipe it when you go to the bathroom!"[8D] 0 -

A keloid eventually forms, contracts, and pulls on the surrounding tissue.

Some African tribes practice scarification. In order to make the scar-tissue "stand-up", they rub a mixture of common dirt and pig feces into the slices/gouges.The end effect is a "relief" pattern. With the design of slices/gouges, standing roughly 1/4" above the surrounding skin area.

Scarification was/is mainly used by dark-skinned people who are prone to raised scar tissue called keloids. When Caucasian people do it they must cut much worse incisions because they don't keloid nearly as badly as do Negroid peoples.
All sorts of body modification has been practiced throughout history by many various cultures. Those photos were pretty horrific.0
