Whats your normal shooting range?
In Tazzer's hog post he mentioned that it was shot at 200 yards and mentions how long of a shot that is.
Now here in nebraska 200 yards is considered relitively close with a lot of deer being shot at the 300 yard mark and if your skilled at shooting, the 400 yard mark.
And if we are hunting prarrie dogs, 700-800 yard shots are not uncommon if hunting in the right places.
So this got me thinking, What do you guys consider Normal when it comes to shooting distances and whats the farthest you've shot[?]

Shots on deer around here are usually within 100yds. Course a lot of these new Muzzleloaders make it easier to take longer shots. Some guys swear they've taken deer at 250-300yds with theirs. They may have, but they obviously haven't studied the ballistics behind the shot they're making.
Shots on Varmints can run from 25-500+. There are very few "Pastures" and open fields around here. Any acre that is tillable, is planted. Corn fields stretch out for miles and shots in those fields are unlimited sometimes.
I personally won't take a shot beyond 400-450 as I don't know the ballistics beyond that distance.
Most of the shooting ranges around here are limited. 225-250 is the longest distance at my range.0 -
25 yard indoor, with simulated distance 100-300 yard targets. 0 -
300yds is a general "no brainer" for me personally as I sight in high at 100yds and to 300 my point blank trajectory will be only a few inches high or low (of no consequence). I'll take a 400yd shot quick, and have a fair probability of making a DRT shot. At 500+ yds,..I am relying on the laser to get me an accurate range (verified several times) and I consult the drop chart. I prefer to "click zero" rather than hold over,..but with a MOA calibrated reticle, I'll take most any shot I can get a verifiable distance on.
clicked in at 619yds last summer, guys told me I couldn't make the shot, (they should know better), they payed my bar tab[^]
With a verified range and possibly an earlier sighter round at 1000yds, I'll shoot at a deer or even a groundhog.0 -
Most of the public hunting areas here in N Fl. a 100 yard shot would be long range... on the other hand, lots of private hunting areas have much longer shots available/possible, all due to terrain and trees, etc.
Ranges around here are usually 100 yards, although there is one 200 yard range (going there later today) and a 600 yard range (never been, want to badly)0 -

I'd say that I am not too confident of my bullet in the pie plate much farther than 100 yards. But since I basically hunt in the woods, it is not a problem! And over at the club we have a 50 yard and a 100 yard range ... I'm all set! 0 -

yep, same here, my gun club's range only goes up to 100yds anyway. grew up in ohio where you can't hunt deer with a rifle anyway, so i stick with my rifled shotgun.0 -
the range closest to me has a 10,25,50,100,200 yard range, if i want to drive 35 miles i can go out to 800 it is a friends personal range, but he does host a 50bmg club there since that it the longest range in the area 0 -
I live in northern Minnesota most typical hunting for deer most are shot within 75yds. our local range only goes to 100 yds. Another range close to me goes out to 450 yds. longest shot made at a deer by me was at 350 yds took 2 rounds to hit.and the weather that day was snowing and -3 degrees. 0 -
I just go about 1.5 mile outside city limits - and it's "The range"...

I like to shoot up to 500 yards. My shooting club in Vermont has a range that has 100, 200, 300, 400 & 500 yard targets. My home range in Ohio only has 100 yard range where I do most of my shooting. I would like shoot further but that is the limit on the ranges I use. 400 & 500 is plenty challenging for me though. I would not try to kill game beyond 300 as I always want a one shot kill shot and no chance of wounding. Humane shots are absolutely necessary in my book. I shoot squirrels in the head only often at 80 to 100 yards with my special 22 rimfire. I practice on golf balls at 100 yards to do this. stevenrayspeck the 200 yard shot was a long shot for my dad hes used to hunting with a 30-30 100yds or closer. all my rifles are sited in at 200 and that I can take shots at 300 with out a second guess no problem. I dont shoot enough past 300 to feel good enough to take a shot at a live animal past that [;)][:D]
I have been wanting to start doing some long rang shooting at 500yds but I think I will still keep my shots 300 and closer [:D]0 -

Around here, if you have to poke out past 450 yards, the town's been hunted too much.0 -
In this state there isn't any hunting with rifles with rifle cartridges(some pistol cartridge rifles are ok, along with the pistol in a rifle cartridge), so most people don't shoot too far. Most ranges are a hundred yards, so most of the people I know shoot for group size. I like to shoot pistol at a hundred yards, keeps you in practice for the closer shots.
Farthest shot with a pistol was 125 yards, hit a groundhog. The pistol was a Dan Wesson 44 mag, 8 inch barrel with open sights. The longest rifle shot is about 550 yards on a jack rabbit in New Mexico. The rifle was a Weatherby Mk V, 300 weatherby magnum.0 -
For close range, claymores are great. You can run command wire about as far as you need to. For really long range though, I prefer AP mines. I don't even have to be on the same continent. Yes, I am a combat engineer. 0 -
I practice out to 400 yards. But I've never had to shoot that far. Average range on elk has been less than 150 yards. 0
