That is the nicest thing I can say about this statement.
Often used by CEO lovers and supporters.

Balance and justification are interesting words when greed is the deciding factor.

Does anyone find it interesting that this site is sponsored by the AFL-CIO? Unions still exist by making people believe everything boils down to the working stiff against "the man".

Get an education, work hard, invest in yourself and you can land that promotion and maybe even the CEO position.

Did any of the union members out there check their salary against their union president's?

My Dad used to talk about guys at the shop saying things like this. He used to say that what another man earns is his own business and nobody else's. Myself, I always thought they were just envious.

I am one of three partners at my firm and I can assure you that I (we) make more money- A LOT MORE- than any of our slaves...Er, I mean employees. Why is this? Because it was our money that started the firm and since we took all the risks we are going to get more money, it is that simple. We currently have 40 full time empoyees and ten part time; contract engineers for special projects, engineers working on graduate degrees who need time to attend school, and one guy who just wants to work whenever the hell he wants to work! At last count these fifty folks are using their wages to provide for something like 135 family members or significant others; wives, ex-wives [:(!], kids, aging parents, bar owners [:0], mortgage companies, ect. When we hand the slaves their checks twice a month that is my (our) money we are giving out, the employees earned it but the money belongs to the owners of the firm. How much do I make? When I was an engineer working for Union Oil decades ago I once dreamed of making $1000 per day. When I reached that level many years ago I realized I'd set my sights too low and that there was MUCH more money than that out their if you owned your own business and worked hard.

If you ment that the way you said it, YOU sir, are an idiot. That money does NOT belong to the firm, it is their EARNED wage. No different than a car payment. You paid for a service. THAT statement highlights what greed IS. Your business savvy might share a part of the inflow of income, but THEIR work and dedication is what keeps YOU in the finer things. I take issue with a half baked notion that thier wages somehow BELONG to you.

With the exception of a very few truely high paid exectives for large companies the way to make BIG money in this country is to own your own business. No employeer in his right mind is ever going to pay you the kind of money that you should be worth, why the hell should he? When I started with Union oil back in 1979 I think I was earning about $40,000 per year, good money back then. After I was laid off I became a contract engineer for various oil companies and was averaging about $60K per year. When I married Mrs K it was time to settle down and I took a position with a large firm as a senior engineer making about $100,000 per year. The problem was that I knew that I was worth more money and that my hard work was earning that company WAY more money than the hundred grand that they were paying me. Solution? Risk it all along with two other like minded fellows (another engineer and a CPA) and start up our own firm. The results? I reached that $1000 per day level, motored right on through it and never looked back.

I only have problems with Todays VP's. and presidents. Everyone has one with a golden parachute. "I will try my best but if it don't work out in 5 years you pay me X-million for my effort if I get cut"

    Company/Corporation killers.

    Kristov;
Using your personal example as an argument for the hogs feeding off the bodies of workers does not do you credit.

Nobody has a problem with a man bettering himself.

First of all, 70% of workers in this country are employed by what is considered "small business" owners. Small business owners are the people who invested all of their own money at COMPLETE risk to themsevles and their families. When things dont work out THEY GET NOTHING. Small business owners are also the ones who work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Everything is their responsibility. Most people can quit their job or get fired and go find another job next week doing the same thing and making the same amount of money.
Despite what the media tells you and what most people thing, the American business man is compassionate and goes to bed many nights worrying about laying off workers. 99% of employess have NO IDEA the dedication, hard work, stress and risk it takes to own and run a business.
Capitolism means the market determines what people earn. If you think its so easy to go start and run a company to make millions of dollars then go do it.
If you think your life would be better if CEO's made less money than you are simply a class warrior. The majority of money that a company earns goes back into the company to ensure that during lean years the employess can continued to be paid even when the company isnt making money.
The media only talks about the .001 % of big business CEO's who make alot of money and their compensation packages. This is utter liberal distrortion of context and reality.

If ONE CEO in America makes 240 times what a wage earner makes..its one too many.
Your defense of such changes nothing.

Perhaps if big business and big government wern't in bed together, I MIGHT see your position..in other words, Free Enterprise...but
Capitalism will someday go into the history books as being far more evil then Communism.

The work force is made up of two kinds of people: Those willing to work for someone else and those willing to let others work for them. This crosses all class and eduational bounderies. The crazy old guy who lives next door to me owns a couple of popular surf shops, rakes in piles of money and he never graduated from high school. I take my cars to an independent Mercedes repair shop for service and the shop's owner is a former MB master mechanic who once worked for the dealer where I have purchased my MBs. Why spin wrenches for the dealership, with the dealer taking in a big cut of the hourly service rate, when he can do the same service/repairs at his own shop and keep the money for himself? Was he a sucess? He drives the same S-Class Mercedes that I do so I guess so! My old man started out as a plumbers helper for about fifty cents an hour and eventually ran his own plumbing business. He kept his business small
because that is what he wanted, but it gave us a comfortable income after many years of just managing to get by on the wages he was paid as an employee. CEOs answer to the stockholders and not the rank and file. I answer to my two partners, not the fifty people we keep chained to their desks (that is a joke) under constant threat of the whip (another joke). I will say that at Christmas time when I handed each of my serfs (joke) their bonus along with the $100 VISA gift card, a suggestion from GB members which proved VERY popular, purchased with money which came from my own pocket (no joke), not one of them spit on it and shoved it back at me.

Once again, Kristov..allow me to reiterate my position.
I have little heartburn with someone such as yourself.

When I speak of barbarians, and corrupt CEO's..that does not include men that entered legally, learned the language, and made raving successes of THEMSELVES... I don't give a damn how much money you make..as long as you understand that BY YOURSELF...you are limited in just how much money you can make.
Those slaves, chained to your desks..help you right along to increase your pile.

Many of those on top regard the wage earner with utter contempt..guard yourself well to not fall into that trap. Were we ALL to start a company..where do you suppose you would get the workers to make you the tons of money you intend making off their sweat ?

Leave the hordes of barbarians out of the mix...

In the Army, I was always taught that if you took care of the soldier, they'll take care of you and make you shine. This worked real well for me.

When I got out of the military, I went to work for a large grocery company here in Iowa. The founder was a smart man and his philosophy towards work was pretty much like mine was in the military. He treated his employees very well and in turn the employees would bust their ass for him, and this made him very successful and very wealthy.

I started working for the company when this gentleman was retiring, and a new president and CEO was put in place. As soon as this guy took over, he and his new board members made sure that the founder lost enough interest in the company that he could no longer sit on the board and could vote on company matters. That is when things started to go down hill for the employees. The company always prided itself as being employee owned, and a family type atmosphere.

A few years down the road the founder and his wife passed away. Immediately, big changes began to occur. The employees lost their trust fund, that alot of employees worked so hard for. Bonuses and incentives were readjusted to make it impossible for an employee to make anything. Basically the employees lost about everything that made the company so great and a great place to work at. Today you'll see store managers leaving the company left and right because there is no reason for them to work their butts off, as the money they would use to make now goes to fill the pockets of the CEO, Co. President, and board of directors. The company has a hard time hiring good quality employees, because of the working conditions. Employees are promised one thing and when it's time to pay up, they are lied to and denied what they were promised. Daily the employees were losing money as the companies top dogs are getting richer. It sucked as it seem like the place went from a excellent place to work, to a place that is being driven with a whip.

What ever happened to sharing the wealth with your employees? Greed! The CEO's have forgotten that the employees are his investment, and that they are the ones who make him wealthy. This is why I alway despised corporate CEO's and their cronies.

Highball - I believe the issue you have is in your context. You believe that the "employee makes money for the boss". I think of it another way. I say "the owner creates a job where the employee can earn a living for himself and his family".

Just so you know, the salaries of CEO's in America are traditionally pretty low. For instance, the CEO of American Airlines makes about $650,000 in salary. Many mechanics at the airlines make between $85,000 - $140,000 a year.

Much of the high compensation that you hear about on the news is from severance packages or stock. I am not a fan of high paid severance packages for CEO's who do poorly but remember that they are always approved by the board of directors which are voted in and on by the stock holders.
Also, most employess of major companies own stock in the company and are compensated with that as well.

MY CEO is just the Governor; in 5 years, I can better what he's making just doing part-time consulting after I retire!
If a man starts his own business, grows it to a multi-million dollar enterprise, sells it for half-a-billion and starts another one: is he HBs nightmare CEO or just a hard-working individual with more energy, ambition and drive than the slugs he employs?
Personally, I am reminded of a simple line; Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors' ass, nor anything that is thy neighbors'. Words to live by.
