No air machines in town to fill a tire!
Went to five different gas stations trying to find an airpump that was working, no luck. Can a car tire be inflated by using a hand pump like you would use on a bicycle? Figured I'd ask first before I go out there and give myself a heart attack pumping away!

A good tire pump will do it in about 15 min.
Don't think one of the compact bicycle tire pumps will work that fast though.

I think you probably could. I've pumped bicycle tires up to 120 psi with floor pumps. Make sure it's a floor pump, and i'd expect it to take a lot of time. 0 -
Go to the store and buy the 12 volt air pump takes awhile but they do work and can really come in handy when in the middle of nowhere 0 -
chris my man buy your self a set of tire sealers and get a 12 volt mini compressor for you auto, I can't imagine not being able to find air wow. a tire pump $30.00 new tire repair kit $10.00.. by the time you get done pumping on that bycicle pump your going to wish you had something, what kind of pump do you have hand pump or foot pump and how long is the stroke?

You need to get one of those little electric pumps that plugs into cigarette lighter so you can always have it when you need it, expecially on the road. Walmart or Kmart, cheap throw away when breaks, but usually lasts a long time. My old Dad said that someday we would be paying for air and Canada's most valuable resource would be their supply of fresh water. He almost flipped out when gas went to .36 cents a gallon and I wonder what he would say today about a little bottle of water for .89 cents. 0 -
Depending on the size and location of the hole a air supply of any kind my be useless...........
That fix a flat in a can is garbage and rarely works, it ruins your tire and no legit shop will plug your tire if it is able to be plugged, also can cause blindness if is got in the eye. If you use please notify the people fixing or replacing you tire.
Michelin has a system called PAX, also runflat tires are available.0 -

The shame of it is nearly all of these gas stations and convenience stores had free air. But due to people cutting hose and stealing things they just cant do it anymore.0 -

If not. let the air out of it. Ether in it, quickly throw a match at it.
either itll blow up, or itll air the tire up and re-seal it.

Put a can of PET Condensed milk into your leaking tire (good use for the hand pump [:D] ) than inflate with air.
It won't injure a repairman, but it sure will clear out the tire shop after you run a thousand miles in the summertime with it in your tires [}:)]0 -

If the seal is broken with the rim, some lighter fluid/carb cleaner/etc and a match will get you rolling in no time. 0 -
If you need to re-seat the tire to the rim, get a ratchet strap and run it around the circumference of the tire and tighten it up. You can pull the tire to rim and it will seat. I have done this. It's a little less dangerous than setting it and possibly yourself on fire. Come on down to the house, I've got three air compressors. 0 -
floor pump works fine...but takes a while
a wall-plug or battery powered compressor is not all that expensive (the battery powered one costs more) and is available in any Sears or even Wal Mart0 -

Tires do not ignite that quickly...it actually takes quite a bit to get a tire burning.0 -
I know how you feel. We've got 3 locations around town and in the winter, none of them work. All out of order. I think severe cold screws them up somehow. The needle gets screwed up. 0 -

worked in a shop that fixed tires right after i got out of school.... starting fluid tires and matches...if you didnt get yourself killed very good chance it would have gotten you fired...
9 times out of ten. if you take the core out of the valve stem you can get them to air up......best then alternative is to have portable air tank and build an air blaster out of it.....cut hole in tanks big enough for an 1 1/2 close pipe nipple weld it to tank add a valve then longer pipe nipple with the one end flattened out....blast air into tire bead with air hose hooked up and wallaaa tire is beaded up0 -
Yes, I have one of those portable air pumps you plug in your lighter. carry it in my Rover all the time, along with a can of seal a flat. this fall my trqctor front tire would go flat every night. I got tired of airing it up with the tiny compressor,takes about 15 minutes, and just put a can of seal a flat in it. stayed up all fall until the other day when it was -20 in the barn. I jacked up the tractor, pulled the tire and took it to the tire shop. Rolling it, I noticed a sound like rocks inside. The tire guy dis-mounted the tire, and dumped all the frozen seal-a- flat out. guess whenit freezes, so doews the sealer stuff!!! 0 -
My recomendation is to buy one of those Battery Jumper/Air Compressor combos.....
If your battery dies in the middle of nowhere, you'll be glad you had one0 -
Yes you can inflate an auto tire with a bike pump. It takes 2 days.
Short term fix - by cheap 12 volt inflator 5 to 10 bucks
Long term - get a battery jump start thing with a compressor and light 40 to 60 bucks. You won't regret it.0 -

My car always has a hand pump in it, the same one I use for my bike tires, and a pressure gauge.
I check the PSI, give the tire 10-20 pumps if its a little low, check it again, until its at the desired pressure (if you have to pump 10+ times, and check more than 3 times, you let your tire get way too low).0 -

He had a can of starting fluid, spray starting fluid
inside tire, lite the spray, the starting fluid
inside tire causes the pressure to change so fast,
tire is expanded, bead is set.0 -
A friend of mine was in th air machine business. They were making some serious money from these little things. They employeed themselves, son, daughter, their spouses, his sister.
Then they got the offer to buy them out. It was the "buy out or we're going to run you out" offer. They say it was "the mob" that bought them out, but in any case they knew they meant business.
Supposedly this outfit had do it in the past. The machines could be vandalized fast than they could keep them in operation. They took the offer.0 -
you can always make an adapter. remove spark plug screw in adapter with plenty of hose and start your engine. many a farm tractor tire have i aired up that way 0 -
Before the advent of the 12 volt air pump, they used to make a spark plug pump (fit into the hole where there would ordinarily be a spark plug) - we used them all the time when we used to do a lot of desert racing and sand dune runs. I've got one somewhere - I keep seeing it every ten or fifteen years!

I was at Silver Lake sand dunes and saw this Jeep that the owner converted his A/C compressor and a tubular bumper into a full blown Air Compressor. He installed quick release air hose fittings on the bumper. All he had to do was hook up the hose and inflate. http://www.visi.com/~bsimon/jeep/my_air.html 0
