    Sure.

I can be civil and courteous to someone while explaining there's not a snowball's chance in hell I'll be feeding their addiction, metaphorical or not.

I don't know your situation, perhaps there is something serious in the past. However, I think I would have taken the call; maybe she was trying to reach out. I think we need to rise above our hurts and personal feelings if someone is attempting to make amends.

It wouldn't have hurt your realtionship if you took the call, but avoiding the call didn't make anything better

Your wifes daughter? That would make her your stepdaughter. Do like my stepfather did, answer the call and talk in a condescending manner until she gives up and leaves you alone. Or be a gent. and grant a "do-over"

    If it were me...

...if there any way I could take that call and be civil I would take it, because I think it's always best to make good if possible.

That said, maybe there's a situation where a person can't be civil even on the phone for a happy b-day. If that were my situation, I wouldn't take the call. It's gotta be pretty bad if it gets to that.

I would have taken the call...

quote:About the only times she's been descent to me in the 14yrs I've known her, was when she wanted something. So my question to you is

Doesnt sound overly serious unless you are not saying it all, she could be reaching out to you.....

Might be a good time to review the past 14 years, check your own behavior to see if there was anything on your part that maybe helped make her the way you think she is?...Talk it over with your wife, how does she feel about the situation?

...Yes I'd have taken the call, if I'd been in a good mood...which is not often...the getting "old" and given more lee-way to be a grouch has a lot to say for it [:D]

...Serious, yes, take the call! You can open up the lines of com and tell her A.what you think of her cheesy ways. B.work things out. C. verbally beat her to death as your older and should be quicker of witt. D. bury the hatchet and move on to become the Beaver Cleaver family. E. just bury the hatchet literally. You MISSED a golden opportunity to talk with her...[;)]

NO....not no but HELL NO....hasn't give a snit for 14 years & doesn't know correct date is confirmation of that fact....my (ex) daughter is the greediest person in the world (oil income is around $1mil)& has worked tirelessly backstabbing me for many years to gain control of farms so now after a lifetime of building these up to top level (i am only one that ever farmed) i am living on social security because rest of family, also as greedy, believed all her crap & wanted to be sure to cash in so now they can all try to figure out how she will screw them & my wife & I are FREE...(my honesty, ethics & integrity are NOT negotiable) never to acknowledge them for the rest of our lives...my 2+++cts .....

My sister and middle daughter are both the same way ... either they want something or they are giving me a signal that they "might" need something in the near future

Both are very manipulative and 90+% of the time tell me how rough they have it. I consider them sharing their woes trying to get me to feel guilty ... they are both a huge disappointment and are capable of so much if they would only put as much effort into making a life as they do trying to do things the "easy way"

Depending on my mood, sometimes I take the call and I don't.

Short, concise, and to the point. Love it.

Screw her! Everyone is all namby-pamby about "making amends" etc. Sometimes it is BETTER to not talk to certain people. Some people are just idiots, and don't deserve your time or energy!

Of course I would have taken the call. What could it have hurt?
Your wifes daughter does something seemingly nice, why not receive it?

You should have taken the call. Regardless of the past, she was reaching out to you in a civil gesture to wish you a happy birthday. My recommendation is to call her, mention you understand she called, and tell her thanks for the thought. This is obviously an attempt on her part to heal the rift between you two.

Maybe she just won the lottery and wants to share a cool million or two with you for your special day?

I call back once in a while ... but as I mentioned above, I don't always take the call. After all, why should I "receive her" at her convenience!

I will not refuse to talk to any of my kids no matter what has transpired. If they wish to hate me, they do it on their time. Don
