Atheism is Now A Religion in California !!!
As we all know religion is being banned in public schools in America. Atheists call for "seperation of church and state" everyday in America. Atheists and Christian haters say "NO RELIGION" in Americas schools. Well guess what...I did some research on the new law, SB 777, signed in California by Arnold Schwasblack person which has redefined gender and allows for male students to use the girls lockers rooms. Well there is something in this bill that caught my eye. Look at this.....
SEC. 8. Section 212.3 is added to the Education Code, to read:
212.3. "Religion" includes all aspects of religious belief,
observance, and practice and includes agnosticism and atheism.
Since agnosticism and atheism are now a "religion", wouldnt that mean they cant be taught, preached, promoted or endorsed by any teacher or student ?

Reminds me of a wisecrack I read the other day on another forum: "Atheism is a religion like bald is a hair color."
Civilized people don't need this kind of law. The problem is better dealt with using ordinary courtesy and human decency than the legal system. I was a college teacher for 37 years, and religious themes often came up in the literature we read. When students asked, I could expound on medieval Catholic or fundamentalist Christian or Orthodox Jewish theology at some length. Sometimes it would sound as if I was not just explaining those views, but advocating them. When what I said began to sound that way, I would just stop and admit, "I am not religious myself, so don't think I'm trying to convert you."
If we studied something with an atheist or agnostic viewpoint, I could talk about those too, and I would give a similar disclaimer: "I have to admit here I am an agnostic, but I'm not trying to persuade you to be one. We all have to struggle with such questions for ourselves."
Another thing. My son-in-law is an Orthodox Jew, and he teaches philosophy in a Catholic university. He is highly respected by both his colleagues and his students; none of them avoid talking about religion, but nobody tries to convert anybody else. And nobody ever ridicules anybody else's theology or religious practices.0 -

I sure wish the Muslims would adopt the above attitude.0 -
I believe atheism is a religion.
Religion is just a doctrine of beliefs.
I have talked to athiests who have more doctrine for what they believe than some Christians I talk to.0 -

That's nonsensical.
I'm not one to get involved in religous discussions here, but this is a matter of correct usage of the English language.
Atheism isn't a form of religion, it's the inverse. Basically, religion requires the worship of something and Atheism is a disbelief in this entire concept.
Straight from Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Religion
1: the service and worship of God or the supernatural 2: commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance.
Atheism
a: disbelief in the existence of deity b: the doctrine that there is no deity.
You can't worship a disbelief.0 -
They have a good arguement. They worship the same God as us cept'n we don't know it!!! 0 -
This discussion could go a long way. Is Atheism a religion? I would have to say yes and follow me for a moment.
To deny a belief system requires that you have different beliefs. It doesn't matter that your beliefs are logical and the others fantasy, they are still beliefs.
Time has shown us that the old gods all died out as human understanding of natural forces became greater. Once there were sun gods, wind gods, and a host of others. Mankind detected a force and needed to personalize it hence the meeting of a low pressure area and a high pressure area became Zeus, Jupiter, Thor, and others. The sun was called Ra as he spread his warmth and light across the land.
As human curiosity kept breaking down the old gods with scientific knowledge, they fell by the wayside. It was the disbelievers that searched for the true nature of the powerful forces of the day. The religious had no need to look as they had their dogma and status quo with no burning desire to change that.
The current gods had to leave the Earth as Mount Olympus was no longer unreachable to man. While vast stretches of the ocean have yet to be charted, it is safe to assume today that Neptune (or Posiden [sp]) cannot be found. The current crop of gods reside in the neither reigons that man cannot explore as of yet.
It is my belief that one day we will be able to explore the reigons of high frequency, matter to energy and back again, and other electromagnetic resonnance that binds the universe together. There are still many forces in nature that we can only imagine right now. Work in these areas is being done all over the planet by non-believers, which like me, are actually believers.
Sounds like a religion to me! [}:)][:D][;)]0 -
dont believe in God?
ok, just remember, God doesnt believe in atheists.[:0][:I]0 -

I t isn't a disbelief because that would mean that the athiest believs there is a God to disbelieve in.
A true athiest has a strong BELIEF that there is no God.
That is a belief and a Doctrine.
Hence atheism is of itself a set of beliefs.0 -

Jeeeeez.. Lack of Belief means that; No belief.. If you have no belief system then it cant be a religion.. It is the same old con game that religions have been trying to pin on Atheists for years.. If you want to call believing in the human Beings, and ones self as a religion then so be it, but it still isnt a religion no matter how much you want to make it one..Atheists bow down to no diety , God, Gods, or Idols and Icons.. A-Theism means not dieties, gods, god, Icons, or Idols.. or the supernatural.. Call it religion if you want but it is not.. The definition of religion itself says it all, there must be a diety envolved, as Atheism is not a systems of beliefs, it is NON BELIEF>> Key word NON..
Besides all that, if I had to behave as some "Christians" then I would rather stay an Atheist.. At least my morals are where they belong and I am no hypocrite in the aspect of do as I say not as I do..0 -

Hence atheism is of itself a set of beliefs.Belief that something doesn't exist is simply that, a belief. It actually doesn't even fit the definition of a doctrine.
There must be a belief that a God or diety of some sort DOES exist in order to be defined as a religion. In other words, worship of something must take place to be correctly described as a religion. Anti-religion isn't a religion.0 -
This is how I see it; atheism is not an organized religion. It is an opinion and it is lack of a belief. But not a religion by definition. 0 -
Atheism Portal ? v d e
Atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods[1] or rejects theism. When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities, alternatively called nontheism. Although atheism is often equated with irreligion, some religious philosophies, such as secular theology and some varieties of Buddhism such as Theravada, either do not include belief in a personal god as a tenet of the religion, or actively teach nontheism.
Many self-described atheists are skeptical of all supernatural beings and cite a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Others argue for atheism on philosophical, social or historical grounds. Although many self-described atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.
The term atheism originated as a pejorative epithet applied to any person or belief in conflict with established religion. With the spread of free thought, scientific skepticism, and criticism of religion, the term began to gather a more specific meaning and has been increasingly used as a self-description by atheists.0 -
Regardless if anyone understood my post or not.
Regardless if anyone can understand philosophical reasoning.
SEC. 8. Section 212.3 is added to the Education Code, to read:

I don't understand how people can take something so simple and make it so complicated.
Some people believe there is a God.
Some people believe there is no God.
I hope that isn't to complicated.0 -

Here's a Rev. that has it pretty well down.
Those of you who profess Atheism is not a religion are hurting your own cause.
The Religion Of Atheism
By Rev. Bill McGinnis, Editor
A person's religion is the sum total of his beliefs about God and the supernatural. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are the three largest "monotheistic" religions, with belief one God, Creator Of The Universe.
Some religions are "polytheistic," with belief in many gods, each with different functions.
Atheism is the religion whose belief about God is that there is no God.
Some Atheists, for their own political reasons, assert that Atheism is not a religion but instead is the total absence of religion. This allows them to spread their Atheistic beliefs freely in societies which insist on "separation of church and state."
But this is like saying that "black," (which physicists define as the total absence of color) is not a color. The car I drive is a big, old Chevrolet, whose color is black. In common practice throughout the world, "black" is understood to be a color, despite the technical definition of the physicists. Likewise, "Atheism" is a religion, despite any technical definitions to the contrary.
If black is a color, then Atheism is a religion.
If Atheism is a religion, then it must be subject to the same legal restrictions imposed by governments on all other religions. In particular, in the United States, the teaching of Atheism must be prohibited wherever the teaching of Christianity is prohibited.
But where is Atheism being taught? Atheism is being taught, by default, in all places where other religions cannot be taught, particularly in the public schools.
When the State mandates that the Theory of Evolution be taught as fact, that is establishing the religion of Atheism, because the Theory of Evolution asserts that all life forms are created not by God, but by pre-existing natural processes. This is pure Atheism! If we are not created by God, then there might as well be no God, for all the difference He makes.
The mere fact that many scientists are Atheists does not entitle them to establish Atheism as our State Religion!
When the State prohibits free discussion of God in the classroom, that is establishing the religion of Atheism. Wherever the State permits Atheistic ideas to be spread but prohibits Theistic ideas, that is establishing the religion of Atheism.
Therefore I urge you to understand clearly in your mind that Atheism is a religion, just as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are religions. And any restrictions placed on Christianity, Judaism, or Islam must also be placed on Atheism. Atheism must not be allowed to slip through its little loophole any longer, by pretending it is not a religion.
Blessings to you in the name of the One God, Creator of the Universe.

Black is not a color. Black is the absence of Light...[:0][:o)]
Again anyone can claim Atheism is a religion, just goes to show how much they know..
1. Atheists dont have expensive palaces to go to to preach of myth and superstition and fairy tales.
2. Atheists dont have to tithe because of their non belief.
3. Atheists dont go around knocking on doors telling people that they are going to go to hell for what they believe.
4. Atheists are pretty much quiet on the subjects of belief until they get tired of number 3
5. Atheists do not have a diety in place to tell them right from wrong
6. Most athiests can face the realities of life without the crutch of a mysterious invisable playmate.
7. Atheists accept the fact that man is mortal and death is a reality and the end of human existance.
8. Atheists commit less crime than Religious people..(You look up the Stats) I aint doin it for you, I already did before I made this statement..0 -
This is getting tiresome.
As was stated in the first part of this thread, this isn't a matter of beliefs or philosophy, only correct usage of the English language.
Someone who professes that a total disbelief in Gods, dieties or spirits is their religion is more correctly described by several well known slang terms. Religious isn't one of them.0 -
Organized Atheism is a religion. Just go to atheist.org and look for their upcoming vernal equinox celebrations, or whatever else may be on the schedule. Most atheists I know, including myself, find the religion apparent at that website no different than any other. Therefore, although some atheists have turned their belief system into a religion, not all atheists have joined up.
To those that suggest a lack of belief is a belief, please know that that is also just a belief. It is your belief. It is not my belief. I don't have one.0 -
quote:Classic095:
Black is not a color. Black is the absence of Light..
Interesting take on black.
IF black is the absence of light - then how come we can see the 'color black' in print - or in a lighted room/in daylight?
... just curious ... I must have missed that day in kindergarden.
