Liquor legality question.
Later this month I will be going to North Carolina with a friend to pick up an outdoor wood boiler. I am only going to cover some of the driving so that we don't have to stop.
My question is how much alcohol can I purchase out of state and return with.
I would like to buy some Everclear which is not available near me. My friend claims that it is illegal to cross state lines with it.

I dont know about the Legality, but when you get home with it, get a glas Mason Jar, and a bunch of cherries, and fill the glass mason jar up with them, then cover them with the ever clear to the top of the cherries, lid the jar, and let them sit for a few days, then you can eat the cherries, somewhat enjoy the taste, and get a buzz! There was a bar in delaware that served them. 0 -
I doubt if anyone pays much attention to those blue laws. Designed to keep the tax revenue within the home state of residence.
When I go to CA I always try to pick up some booze since Oregon is a controlled state and our booze is about 25-35% higher than the Costco pricing in CA.
If you took it across state lines to sell you are asking for big trouble. For your own consumption its small potatoes and I doubt that anyone will give a crap.0 -
Same as SIG232, I live in a Liquor Control Board State (WA) - & whenever I travel down to California, I buy from Liquor Barn. Suffice it to say, if I wreck on the way back, only the glass will remain from my car - the rest will be consumed in a curiously strong fire!! 0 -
Wow. I travel with liquor all the time... not to consume, but to give as gifts. I simply pack it in my luggage and go to where I'm going.
It isn't a matter of not wanting to purchase it at my destination, rather, it is a matter of not being able to purchase it at my destination. Most of what I give is Colorado wines. They CAN be found out of state, but you'd have a tough time finding it.0 -

I was going to buy in NH on the the way back. He feels uncomfortable about it, so I won't push the issue.
I had planned to buy about a case of Everclear. (Depends how big a case is.) And if I could find it, a case of Cisco.

Everclear is the only liquor that I have seen a label on that reads: WARNING: OVER-CONSUMING WILL SERIOUSLY EFFECT YOUR HEALTH POSSIBLY DEATH..[xx(] That is some POTENT stuff. It's available here in Michigan. Just bought a bottle for Christmas. 0 -

PA frowns on such activities, since the State has a monopoly on liquor sales....
If you get caught with a big load of out-of-state booze, you will pay a hefty fine..I don't think they'll bother you for a bottle or two0 -

Your profile indicates you are from Maine and your state has a four quart limit on the importation wine and spirts for personal consumption. Everclear above 151 proof is not legal in all states and may not be legal in Maine.0 -

like stated above it is more about revenue, not just the taxes directly paid but for resale in bars etc. , a bar owner will buy several cases resale it by the shot, keep 100% and pay no taxes on it, allot of people are unaware that in most places you can buy alcohol cheaper than a bar can buy it from a wholesaler, i wouldn't worry about it myself since i no longer have a liquor license {same with tobacco}
mixing ever clear with cherries is called cherry bombs here, i used to sale them three for a buck, great profit margin
try it in a hot tub, you can absorb it through your pours, work great, and is addicting0 -
As long as the bottles aren't open you should be fine. Even in the trunk it's considered open container and you'll get popped (you might get luck by them just dumping it out). Now if it were me I'd stuff that wood boiler full and pad it with some cheap foam matress topper for the long bumpy road home. I mean at least make the drive worth while.
Here in California I saw a bottle of Everclear (151*) no big whoop since Baccardi's been out with 151 for decades. But I did get a bottle of Absinthe now that is fun. Watching it louche with water and I still got both ears[:D].0 -

yoshmyster, I thought that you could not buy actual Absinthe in the US now. They do have Absinthe but I thought that it lacked the wormwood.
That is one of my plans for one of the bottles of Everclear. I found a kit to make Absinthe with all the wormwood etc.

RugerGunz - There is a Joint in SF making it St. George http://www.stgeorgespirits.com/ and Lucidhttp://www.drinklucid.com/ is supposed to be available but I haven't been able to locate that. I know on the East Coast you can find Lucid at least in bigger cities (as well as on the West Coast). St. George had their first run late last year and at the liquore store price was a $100 (my christmas gift to myself). I have to go to San Franscico soon so I'll go to one of those big liquore houses and do some shopping[:D].
Persoanlly I'd pass on them backyard chem lab Absinthe kit. The steeping method really isn't Absinthe. One really has to run it through a still but that's a whole differenet can of issues (the kaboom factor and the ABC or is it ATF?). It's funny everytime someone runs for Everclear I know it's not to just drink the thing for what it is[:D].0 -

I think they are making a 151 version now. I am looking for the 190 though.
Also with the Cisco (a bum wime) it was always 19%, now it is in 19% or 14%. Cisco is known as liquid crack as it is not a normal buzz. I have only had it once and would like to try it again.
Cisco was made by the goverment to put on the label, "NOT A WINE COOLER" and was made to remove "Takes you by surprise". They were both 100% true.0 -

I don't think I will even be getting anything. My friend is the anxious type and does not want me to be buying any alcohol out of state. As it is his trip for his boiler, I will abide by his rules.
I may make a special trip sometime just as a booze run. I drink far too much, but it does not bother me. [:D]
I am looking for a rock concert sometime in the next year and if out of state, will pick up several cases of booze on the way home.0 -

There is a limit to how much you can purchase / transport at one time in NC.

As for Cisco I haven't had that in years. It has to be like early-90's when I had that. I can recall on the label on the small bottle which indicated "it serves 4" and the larger bottle "8" I think. That was some cheap quick drunk. One reason it was quick was you had to slam it (nasty[xx(]) then about half the bottle it became pretty good[:D]. Also none of the so called flavors tasted like the flavor indicated.
Anyone else recall 40 ounces of "Crazy Horse" malt liquor that was out about the same time? And who can forget St. Ides Malt Liquor? 40 ounces for $1.00 (ah youth[:D]).0 -
I'm not sure about traveling from state to state and all that. I will say I have crossed the state line once or twice with a few bottles of good stuff that you couldn't purchase anywhere else[:D]
I do know that you can bring up to one gallon through customs when entering back into the US without claiming it. So I would say you might be safe as long as you are not transporting more than a gallon. Bury it in your suitcase under worn underwear man. They won't touch it.0 -
Perfectly legal to buy booze in NH and bring to Me. That's why both states have liquor stores near the border. And why a few years ago before the state of Me got out of the liquor business they lowered the prices at the stores near the border. Everyone was going to NH and legally buying liquor to bring back home. I stop every time thru NH. 0 -

I was told that one gallon was the limit for transporting across state lines. Not sure if that is a federal law and not sure if states have their own. 0 -

Everything initially comes out of the still at about 190 proof. Everything.
When your proof goes down, it's because you have stilled almost all of the alcohol from your wine, and then it starts pulling through all kinds of nasty tastes, and smells with the water.
Moonshine can be any proof 200, or below. Getting a perfect 200 would be hard, and would require that you double or triple distill your spirits.
Water bonds perfectly with alcohol. So, you add distilled water to your spirits, until you get the proof that you desire. Adding Cherries is the same as adding water. If you fill a jar half up with cherries, and add 200 proof alcohol, you will end up with 100 proof alcohol. The cherries will turn white from pulling out 1/2 of the water, and replacing it with alcohol, and the cherries will be 100 proof also. I've always heard that called "cherry bounce".
