Defense Gun Suggestions
I am going to purchase a home defense shotgun for my lady friend.
My thought is of course an 18" 12 ga. pump w/ no.4 buck shot 2 3/4".
But I'm wondering if she could fire a 12 ga. affectively or if I need to get her a 20 ga.? I'm wondering too if it would have to have a pistol grip?
She is 118 lbs. and very fit. But she is an inexperienced shooter, and alot of training/practice is not at all feasible. Opinions and suggestions please.

I picked up an old winchester model 1300 defender police pump for just such a purpose. 18 inch barrel, minimal recoil, vary reliable and also inexpensive comparably. I opted for pistol grips front and rear so that it would reduce recoil further and could be shot in a point and fire situation. As an added bonus I equiped it with a pressure grip flashlight on the front grip. If it would ever need to be used I wouldn't recommend the light as it may more easily make you the target, however, in a low light situation it should certainly look good that you have a "white" light source to police, etc. Did all the modifications myself (they are easy I'm not that good). The only draw back is you are now limited to possible uses so this stays primarily in night stand. 0 -

Well, then I need to spend the big bucks and get some of those Glaser Safety Slugs and do like Allen Griggs and actually run some tests. Sorry that I misled you. The blue tip Glasers hit the drywall at an oblique angle, and did not penetrate it. Which was exactly what I desired.

12 or 20 either one will work my youngest daughter shoots a 12 with no problem 0 -
Whatever you do - find something that fits HER !!!!
Sizewise and such... if inexperienced and not having practised a lot - a gun that fits her, is important.
That way it's easier to sight or point/spray-n-pray.... with a bigger chance of hitting what she intend to.
Have the stock worked on, and perhaps a Limbsaver recoil-thingy put on it so she won't be afraid of using it.0 -

Does your lady friend understand completely that a defense gun in the house actually means "offense"? She has to be prepared to kill someone!
Just a thought. Perhaps you have already discussed it with her. Most people in her situation don't think about actually killing until you bring it to their attention.[;)]0 -

Talking to her right now. Yes she understands and would meet a threat with force. And much like myself, she is prepared to use lethal force to defend herself, but sincerely hopes that day never comes. Thanks Stub.0 -

I didn't read all the post. But after reading a few I'm reminded of my grandpa's old saying. K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. Just get her a simple shotgun. No pistol grip, she's a just a little smaller than me and I couldn't shoot a 12g from the hip.
Get a shotgun. Dry fire it once, leave the safety off, then load it and don't chamber the rounds. Then all she has to do is rack the slide and point and shoot. If someone breaks in the house tell her to grab the shotgun and phone hide and call 911 and wait.0
