Defense Gun Suggestions
I am going to purchase a home defense shotgun for my lady friend.
My thought is of course an 18" 12 ga. pump w/ no.4 buck shot 2 3/4".
But I'm wondering if she could fire a 12 ga. affectively or if I need to get her a 20 ga.? I'm wondering too if it would have to have a pistol grip?
She is 118 lbs. and very fit. But she is an inexperienced shooter, and alot of training/practice is not at all feasible. Opinions and suggestions please.

Just to add to what is being said, a .410, 28 gauge or 20 gauge with bird shot at home distances will do the trick. At 5 yards the shot pattern has not opened up at all. In effect, it is a one ounce frangible slug. 0 -
if you opt for a pistol grip only i would go with a knoxx breachers grip. best there is and not too expensive. and a 12 wouldnt be too harsh i weigh 125 and shoot slugs just dandy but a 20 would work just as well 0 -

2. All she needs to do is short shuck one shell in a pump gun and she is out of the fight.

Classic, initially that is exactly what I was thinking. But I think it could prove too complicated for her in an emergency situation.
It's settled then. I'm going to buy her a .38 spcl. or .32 mag snub, and a sxs shorty 20 gauge.(ouch!)

I did some experiments with the 20 gauge shotgun.
I had a double barreled shotgun with number 8 shot.
I got an old ankle high work boot, the ankle leather was still in good shape. Thick leather.
I set it at 15 feet and fired at the ankle. The pattern was about an inch across.
The shot entered the leather and went right out the leather on the other side.
Then, to simulate bone, I put a pine 1x4 in the boot.
I aimed at a fresh section of leather.
The shot entered the boot and tore the board to shreds. Only a few shot exited.
I had the impression that had a person been wearing that boot, they would have had their foot blown off.
I would not hesitate to use a 20 gauge with birdshot for household defense.0 -

That is some of the best, real life, personal information I have read in a long time. I wonder how that would apply to the Glaser Safety Slug with the #8 shot? I have been under the impression that such a round would not even penetrate one piece of plasterboard.0 -

Fox I did that test because guys on this forum were claiming that close range bird shot would not penetrate a leather coat.
My tests proved otherwise.
In my work as a Paramedic I saw 15 patients take close range torso shots with birdshot, I mean, inside the house range, and every one of them died.
One poor teen aged kid, he had just crossed the barbed wire fence. His brother was crossing the fence, had the loaded .410.
It discharged and hit the first brother in the back of the neck from ten feet away. The load was birdshot. DRT.0 -

Well, then I need to spend the big bucks and get some of those Glaser Safety Slugs and do like Allen Griggs and actually run some tests. Another GB.com member gave me some negative info about the Glaser's in that one fired into drywall made a huge crater but did not penetrate. This lead me to believe that if I loaded my daughter's carry revolver (,.38 spl, 5 shot 2") with the Glaser's and had to shoot a perp who had on a heavy leather coat (or was wearing a piece of drywall, hehe, joke there) that her round would not penetrate the coat and would not injure/stop the perp. I need to revisit that becasue I bought daughter a Taurus ultra light and just for fun (and to encourage her to always carry it) I want to get the whole package down as light as possible. Already did that with the gun itself, but also wanted to put the very light 80 gr Glaser safety slugs in her firearm (has 135 grain Federal Hydra-shoks now) and the lighter bullets would mean a lighter carry package. Also, if the Glasers are the man stoppers they are advertised to be, that means she could probabably get one shot stops and this is a good thing when you only have a five shot revolver.0 -
Man that is going to get expensive if you buy a new leather coat to test 'em on. Personally I have some glasers in .357, but usually load hydroshocks or talons. 0 -
Where it pertains to my situation, 5/8" drywall is used on each side of the interior wall + R-11 glass in the wall cavity. I guess I'm thinking no.4 shot. Or maybe some type of defense round. 0 -
These are all opinions, and I love the variety!
Myself, I LIKE a side-by-side for home defense. Exposed hammers if you can get it, so a loaded gun doesn't have to be cocked all the time. Besides, the sound of those hammers coming back has stopped many an intruder. The look of those two barrels also.
I am a huge fan of the 20 gauge in the field, but for home defense believe the 12 is better. Bigger muzzles for the bad guy to look at, more lead thingies to hit him with. I would go with low-base loads, since we are talking home defense rather than geese at 70 yds.
Practice with buckshot and heavy birdshot, and see which is more effective. And which does/does not penetrate walls. Practice reloading, which can get pretty darn quick with a smooth-opening sidey. Make certain the brand of gun ejects with gusto, rather than the old trap-shoot one-inch liftout. You don't want to have to pick them out as part of the drill.
I say no to the pistol grip, for home defense. And no folding stocks or stockless. They look great in the movies, but are bad for control.0 -
Sorry, but one more thing. If the lady isn't happy with the gun you choose, don't buy it. You want her to LOVE it. It will be her friend, so make certain she is excited about the choice even if you are not. Assuming of course that all choices are adequate to get the job done. When the chips are down, and she has it in her hand, you want her to be absolutely comfortable with what she can do with it. 0 -

Several years ago,I bought five packages of Glasers in different calibers from 38 sp to 308 Win. I shot the pistol calibers at 1x6 pine boards from 20 feet. ALL of them passed throught the first board and imbedded in the second. The 308 was shot into a milk jug full of water. Total destruction! I never did find the lid of the jug and the rest of it was shredded.
My wife's 2" Chief's Special is loaded with Glasers. I keep a 20 ga. pump with 18 1/4" cut off barrel and pistol grip loaded with 5 heavy #6 shot handloads standing between the bed and nightstand.0 -

the problem with a new shooter is they dont know what to expect when the gun goes off. and there going to miss bigger than poop if they get get a gun with a single projectile they will probably have it taken away and used on them, she is far better off with a 410 shot gun. a 12, 20,or 16 gauge will enetrate walls as will a 22 or bigger singal projectile gun, you dont want her shooting someone in the house or the neighbors house. the juge which is a shorgun held like a pistol if she fires one shot in the vicinity of an intruder there going to split if not then the second shot could kill them if I knew how to download a picture I'd show you the judge, I'm sure you can find one give it a try it shouldn't scare her to much. 0
