SOrry for not listening to you guys. I know I should learn from you.
Yesterday, my 2 year old was diagnosed with a really bad ear infection. No biggie. Dr. prescribed Omnicef, an antibiotic. Wifey took prescription to have it filled at Walmart Pharmacy. brought it home. Bottle says take 2 tsp, 2x per day for 10 days. Well, we gave it to him yesterday, 2x 2 tsps. I gave him 2 more this morning, and looked at the bottle. it was half gone already. I told Mrs. CCE that she needed to call and get a refill because it would only last another day. Bottle says no refills...strange.
So wifey calls and talks to pharmacist. "Oh, that's supposed to be 1/2 tsp 2x/day. My underlings messed it up."

You've gotta be @!$#@#$^#$%^#@ outta your mind! Isn't that the pharmacist's job? to make sure her underlings get my kids' prescriptions right???
So we talked to Dr. again. Dr. says son may have some diarrhea and fever. Yup you got that right. Dr. also says report Walmart to Poison Control. Yup you got that right.

Now I have to go pick up another bottle of the stuff so it will last the full 10 days. And I'm not going to pay for their mistake.

Why didnt you ask the dr how much to give him when you got the prescription?...
Any dr will usually tell you what he is prescribing and the dosage...Cant blame just walmart...A bit of the blame lies on whoever was given the prescrip for not asking how much...It could have even been the drs writing....0 -

hey now, no reason for name calling. i wasnt aware that being a parent made you a medical expert. however, i do see that being a parent gives you the right to label others as a "little coward". so to answer your question, yes, i believe the giants will beat the patriots

For the record, when my wife and I were told by our Doctor that our daughter had (And I quote) "A really bad ear infection" I took that to be expert advice, if not a medical term. And she was perscribed antibiotics. So despite what your homeroom teacher may tell you, there are times when antibiotics are perscribed for children younger than two.0 -

Forgive me if I dont want to answer irrelevant personal questions from you. Whether I have kids or not does not change the fact that new medical studies have shown that OLD medical practices of giving traditional medications to children under 4 yrs old for routine infections is in fact more dangerous than the infections themselves.
For some reason you seem to be very sensitive to this issue and it has caused you to lash out at me in a personal manner which might indicate a deeper and more serious inner turmoil that maybe you should address. Luckily doctors are still freely perscribing anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medications for adults0 -

yes, i will acknowledge that not all infections are the same and some are more serious than others.
i am someone who generally believes that the human body heals itself better than moderan modications do.
humans lived for thousands of years without modern medications and it helped to build immunity and grow stronger more resilant humans.
in recent times, modern medications have helped to allow innocuous strains of bacteria and virus to grow into deadly and resistant forms. this makes people more at risk.
it is estimated that over 7,000 children under the age of 4 die in america every year from usage of common cold medications and anti-biotics while less than 500 die from the infections themselves when untreated. THUS...the new recomendations against usage for routine infections.
"routine" infection generally doesnt mean "serious" or "non serious" but rather a designation of a common strain of bacteria or virus. the vast majority of infections are from common strains. therefore, in the case of the OP, unless blood work was done to isolate a rare and potentially lethal strain, then no matter how bad the local infection got it would still be classified as "routine".
if the infection had gone beyond "routine" then most likely the doctor wouldnt be treating for just an ear infection but rather more involved treatments that wouldnt be done through walmart.
this is why i dared to assume the infection was "routine"

By the way, human children are growing faster than their ear canals can descend. Did you know that when you grow, your ear canal changes position? It's true. You find these things out when you have children. So they have more ear infections than even a hundred years ago. So, even though, children are healthier and stronger than ever in the history of minkind, there are trade-offs. And those trade-offs can sometimes require antibiotics, even in very small children.0 -

Please excuse my ignorance for not using the proper medical terminology. I'm not a doctor. The doctor said "It's the worst ear infection I've seen in a long time." As to whether it's better to let an ear infection run its course, or to give antibiotics, I trust my doctor, not some guy on a gun forum who thinks he knows what's best for my children. That's why I pay the doctor, not you. If I wanted your advice on how to deal with acute otitis media, I would have made that post yesterday morning. Instead, I took my son to the doctor. Now if you want to defend the pharmacist, that's fine. Go ahead. Tell me the pharmacist was right by allowing the wrong prescription to go on the bottle of meds.
BR: Thanks for the term. I couldn't remember "Acute Otitis Media" off the top of my head. [:)] I don't know about asking the doctor to confirm what the pharmacist says every time. Might be a good idea.

ANYWAY I just got back. The pharmacist said he was sorry. I'll be going to walgreens or CVS or some other pharmacy from now on.

It's hell when your children are in pain.
Our daughter suffered terribly from ear infections. I didn't want to have "tubes" put in, but once the doctor explained about the ear canal descending, we made the appointment immediately. Because I'm a better father than I am a doctor, it was a really easy choice.

I always check when handed the script as well, if its different than what was said 2 minutes earlier, I question it....then check again at the pharmacists....
I dont mean to sound like I was defending anyone or blaming just one person...there is fault all the way round....Its a lesson for everyone to learn...ASK and CHECK

that was pointed at civil rights, not you. The pharmacist admitted that he had entered it correctly into the system, but someone had changed it to a 2 tsp dose. Then when the medicine was prepared, the pharmacist checked it and allowed it to go out with the incorrect dosage.
Normally, a pharmacist knows as much as a doctor, or more, about different medicines. The pharmacist is the one I check with to find out if 2 medicines are ok to be taken at the same time. Or "can I give my son xyz medicine?" That was the pharmacist at Doctors' Pharmacy on Western Blvd, Jacksonville, NC. (If you ever need medicine down there, that's the best pharmacy around.) Apparently Walmart is as discerning in their choice of pharmacists as they are in the other choices they make.
I see your point "verify your prescription" but I should be able to trust my pharmacist. A pharmacist should know that a 2 tsp dose of that antibiotic is too much for a 30 lb kid.

From working in different hospitals and being in the court setting with drs and pharmacists, one things comes crystal clear...
When it comes to your health, your familys' health, TRUST NO ONE!!!
NO ONE....CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK..THEN CHECK AGAIN...
And yes, it was learned the hard way...0
