how many languages?
How many different languages do you speak and what are they. i just signed up to start taking german as an online course through the community college here in town. i also speak ebonics and jive, since i live in the hood.

I have studied German and Spanish and I have sort of learned some Ancient Greek and Latin on my own. But I am not capable in any due to lack of practice and usage.
My wife is much better at languages and I think she can get by in German, Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek, French and Italian.
She's very handy to have along when traveling. [:D]0 -
Two: English and Polish, plus a little Serbo-Croatian. My wife speaks five languages (English, Italian, Spanish, Franch and Latin), my oldest daughter speaks six (her mom's five plus Polish) and my youngest girl two (English and nearly perfect Spanish).
It should only be a matter of time (perhaps minutes) before the usual gang pops in with "I live in America where one langauge: ENGLISH, should be all I'll ever need to speak".0 -
Took German and Spanish in H.S. but don't remember any of it. My Grandpa (Mom's dad) spoke Polish, Russian, German, French, and English fluently. He didn't learn English until he was 9 and he was a natural born U.S. citizen. 0 -

I survived a year of German in my sophomore year of high school -- I could still count to ten or order a beer if my life depended on it.
Finally took a Spanish class a few years back -- problem was, many more years ago I took a "full immersion" course working in a liquor store across the street from a bar that catered to, ah, "undocumented" aliens of Hispanic persuasion. Seems the Spanish I learned in those days doesn't conform to classroom as-spoken-in-Spain Spanish. Doesn't matter, after almost twenty years of no longer being in that environment and not keeping in practice, I can't really speak any version of the language.
I never looked at it as trying to cater to someone who hadn't learned English. It was a chance to learn something I didn't know, and its coming in handy (good to know what a drunk's mumbling after you've refused to sell him more cerveza [;)]) was a fringe benefit. It's one thing to not have the opportunity to learn, or even to not care to learn, but something else entirely to be actually proud of what one doesn't know.0 -

in college, in speech class, we were talking on the same subject, and there was this guy from Turkey who could more or less speak 10 languages.0 -
I can of course speak english and a little German. I can also ask for up to 2 beers in French. However, most folks would say I do poorly at all. 0 -
