4x4 rocks
The snow has started falling here. All the roads are covered and I got picked to take some relatives home because I have the 4x4. Driving down a 4 lane road with one lane partially plowed in each direction I was able to pass everyone driving on the unplowed lane. Even where the plows have been the lanes are covered with snow. The cars in front of me were doing about 15mph in the snow. I passed them all at about 25-30. (Speed limit is 35, slowed down for weather conditions).
And yes I know stopping is the same with a 4x4 as it is in a car and ice is bad.

I will always pay the extra $ for the 4X4. It's nice to know you can go to town whenever you want and not have to worry if the plows have gone...... 4X4's are very American! they give you freedom and Independance. [:D][:p][:D]0 -

Right after I got married back in '92 I had a 1978 Jeep Cherokee 4X4 (the big old Cherokees)and traded it in on a 2wd Ford Ranger. 2 months later we had the worst storm storm on record and I was stuck in the driveway for a week. Never again. Sold the Ranger and bought a Silverado 4X4. 0 -
4 wheel drive just gets you stuck in places you wouldn't be able to get to in 2WD.

I've had 4WD since 2003 and won't do without it again. It's only a necessity here if you want to get out when it snowed. We've gotten abou a foot in the last day, and it's supposed to snow through the night tonight, another 4-8 inches. They don't know how to clear the roads here.0 -
Last year during the Valentines day snowstorm I wound up at work when they closed the offices down. I was the only one there (at the time I was driving a 2 wheel drive cavalier, took me 1.5 hours for a 20 minute drive). My boss with her van could not get out of her drive. The legal department said we had to have the building stay open for the tenants (who also never showed). Longest 12 hour shift I ever had, sitting at a desk with just a phone and radio.
Working security and volunteering with police as an auxiliary I have to be able to go to work in spite of the weather.0 -

My Dodge 4wd dually sucks. I've been stuck in wet lawns.
I have an old Chevy 4wd with 35's on a 6inch lift that I've been using to cut woods. It goes everywhere. It's even surprise me a few times.0 -

always had a 4x4 but bought a 2 wheel drive ranfer that thing was like a hog on ice got rid of it and will not make that mistake again[;)] 0 -
On my last trip to Washington I stopped at a rest stop to use the facilities. Another pickup (2WD) pulled in right behind me.
We both started to pull out at the same time, but there was a lot of ice and I just pressed the button for 4 WD and left the rest stop. As I got close to the freeway I pressed the button back to 2 WD and looked back at the other pickup. He was still in the parking lot trying to get off the ice.
Around here I wouldn't go anywhere out of town without it.0 -
Have had 4wd for the past 9 yrs or so...never be without it. Had a 92 Bronco, 03 Explorer and now have an 04 F250. Love passing people out in the snow (and lending a hand to the those stuck in their Chevys on the side of the road)[}:)]. 0 -

I do have 4wd but seldom use it (expecially in snow). If you drive with common sence you can get around in snow without it.
I am the type that loves driving in the snow. When I was still driving truck I loved going to places like Montana and such in the winter and my company sent me quite often because of this.
When I lived in California I would take road trips up over donner summit durring storms just for fun.0 -

Does that Dodge have a locking rear differential? I am a dyed in the wool GM man. My current 2500HD crew cab does not have it, like my last truck did. I could go places with the last pick-up in2WD that I can't with this one. I have a locking diff in route to put in.0 -

There are times you can't get out of my driveway without 4 wheel drive. When the snow is 18 inches deep 2wd is just to laugh at. The snow plows don't get around to the county oil roads until a week after a snowstorm. You probably would get very far around here.0 -

1. That Cummins puts most of the weight on the front end of your truck. 2X4's with that heavy an engine shouldn't ever be considered in my opinion. Go to a boat ramp sometime and watch the fun.
2. Dually tracking is a problem, as is traction. (Same weight spread over four tires instead of two.) In snow or mud this can be a huge problem as your rear track is wider than the front.
3. Limited slip is something you'll never know you need... Until you do! Tire chains are about the only alternative if your vehicle doesn't have this feature.
Drive your 4X4 like you would a 2X4 and you'll never have a problem. Don't hesitate to drop her into 4X4. You paid for it. Use it! Don't wait until after you get stuck. And remember... The dually was purchased for stability while hauling trailer. It's great for that purpose, but a poor choice for a woods truck.
Oh... That Cummins will idle you out of situations that your gasser just can't handle. Using a diesel in rough going is totally different than using a gas engine. Often you'll need to shift up instead of down due to torque. It's a different mindset altogether.

I only have 5 4x4 now the f-350 stroker is good on snow and ice but worthless in mud off road, kinda like Nord said the weight on the front of the vehicle with none on the rear makes it like a skinny dude with an overloaded wheelbarrow. the front tends to sink in. I use this truck for pulling or hauling heavy loads. The rest of the time I primarily use a 93 Nissan 4x4 with 151,000 miles on it. it will nearly climb a cliff. The Wife drives the Expidition 4x4, great on bad roads. 1500 4x4 chevy 221,000 my son's off road truck and 2007 F-150 4x4 his highway ride. Can't have 2 many 4X4. 0 -

I will lock 4wd in if I need it. All I was getting at is really it is seldom that it is needed on the roads if a person knows how to drive in it.0 -
I use my 4x4 button on the dash to get me out of bad situations, not to get myself into them. 0 -
