Driving rant
Why dont people accelerate at a green light?(we sometimes get five cars through a light that should have gotten 10), why do people pull out in front of you only to put on the blinker (maybe) and turn 100 feet in front of you. Why do people drive 55 in the left lane? Are they hired as blockers by the state troopers?
Why do people always avoid the line knowing they can get in down the road when they clearly know the line is for the turn they need?

Running North out of Tulsa, 169.
Signs for a mile directed traffic to merge left..right lane closed.
Traffic not too heavy..but in the distance, you could see the taillights of the near-parking lot ahead...
Moved into the left lane...no problem, 3/4 of a mile before roadwork...
Only to watch the idiots in the right lane blast ahead..then squeeze into the line, 50 feet from blocked lane...
The REST of the idiots allowing them to do it...
I promptly closed to within ten feet of the rear bumper of the guy ahead...by this time, traffic was 5 mph...
There sat a big SUV, right lane...he was slowly rolling into the left lane....I just locked my elbows and 'held 'er steady'...not sure but he deposited a layer of paint on my right fender...and I surely enjoyed watching him..red faced and shaking his fist at me...[:D]
The guy behind me had the same idea...and closed the gap, also...0 -

I do hate it when they have plenty of warning and try to get ahead of everyone. I used to drive a full sized van and would block the lane if I could get the person behind me to keep my place. Usually not a problem.
But, I am trying to get rid of the Road Rage and just hold my own spot. No more, no less.

I hear ya on that one. We were on the interstate in Illinois one time and the left lane was closed. We were cruising along in the right lane and all of a sudden cars start flying by us on the right. Yep, on the shoulder of the road. I was pretty young at the time, but I remember that the semi in front of us pulled over to the shoulder of the rode and blocked the rest of the jerks. We then pulled alongside of the semi and drove the same speed as him until the left lane opened back up. Was pretty cool and we even got a "well done" nod from a police officer when we drove by him.[:D]

In civilized parts of the country folks alternate going next into the single lane. The guys that want to crowd in front of you to save 4 seconds before they crawl six miles at six miles an hour are jerks. You are an example of mild road rage and no more to be admired or emulated than the idiot in the RV, and you have the paint on your fender to prove you are controled by your emotions and not your intellect. Is 10 seconds or 2 minutes one way or the other really worth getting your bowels in an uproar over, or paint on your fender? 0 -
I've seen truckers move partially into the blocked lane to prevent those trying to get ahead. A procecure I approve of. It makes the ultimate passage through the construction zone quicker, because the truck blocked further merge-delays ahead of me. Joe 0 -

Hoo-boy, did I ever have to take a few deep breaths before replying to this one. Imagine what I first felt like saying.
You, sir, are exactly wrong.
You have no concept of traffic flow, driving rules, or basic manners. You, and others like you who crowd into the left lane early, effectively turn a two lane road into a one lane road, causing and/or exacerbating the back-up. If we could ever get motorists to keep both lanes full, it would greatly reduce the wait for everybody. If, when the lanes come together, everybody sets a one-vehicle gap in front of them, the two lanes merge beautifully like an NP3-plated zipper with almost no delay.
People like you cause this not to happen. People like you are responsible for a large part of the delay on the roads, with rubber-neckers a distant second place.
I work the freeways professionally on a split shift for the morning and evening commutes, and see this sort of problem more or less constantly, including multiple T/Cs this morning, which may help explain my mood.0 -
I watched that happen not long ago. Black Chevy Big blazer goes flying by us on the right on the asphalt. Goes to get off at exit. Highway Patrol was ticketing one moron for doing it when the blazer starts to get off. Patrolman motioned for him to stop also. I tooted the horn and waved when we passed... 0 -

Funny because I drive a 'one lane road' daily...at 65 miles an hour..in heavy traffic.
That is called a 'two-laned road'..normal country road.
One has to rather...ehh.. DENSE..to suggest that "A one vehicle gap" will allow smoothly blending...when the idiots cannot blend smoothly a FULL 3/4 back from the obstruction.
Plus..for all your 'expertise'..the road signs say.."RIGHT LANE CLOSED"...Not.."run down to the end and cut somebody off".0 -

They tried the two lane right up to the work zone thing here last summer. It was such a mess and so many accidents, I don't see how it could be a good thing.
I understand how it could work from your description, but it did not work here in practice.

Wrong, in civilized parts of the world, you merge as soon as you see the "lane closed ahead" sign. Here in Michigan it's the law that you merge ASAP, and "waiting to the last second" is a ticketable offense (and I love it when there are a 1/2 dozen state troopers passing out "reminders" to the A-holes).0 -
I like to keep my blood pressure at a reasonable level. I believe there are more important things to get worked up about. In the overall scheme of life, why get worked up about another 10 second traffic delay.
Of course, if one drives in MA or happens to be dealing with MA drivers, then all bets are off.[;)]0 -

The word 'rant' is perhaps a misnomer...because I smiled all the way home.
I just wanted to share with all youse guys...and raise the blood pressure of the usual suspects...[:0][:D]0 -
My method is simple: I get in the "merge to" lane at the earliest opportunity and follow the vehicle ahead of me at the closest possible distance. I turn up the stereo and look neither right nor left, unless I see flying pieces of steel or feel an impact.
No high blood pressure, no anxiety, and no need to feel bad.

What you did seems completely reasonable to me. I have done the same thing many times.

My company does lane closures once awhile with signs more than double the amount of cone recommened by fdot and arrow board we had 4 arrow boards totally destroyed this year. 0 -
I'm with you Highball, but try facing those morons on a motorcycle sometime. Things that folks in a 3000 pound cage face might lift an eyebrow, but on a bike it often leaves bite marks in the seat. 0 -
The funny thing is, usually, the a$$%#&@ who felt the need to jam in front of you at the merge usually arrives at his overall destination about half a second before you.
NASCAR mentality: as long as I get there a second before you, I'm better than you...

100% with Highball on this one, attitude and all [;)]. Blaming him for a portion of the problem that occurred, because he observed a sign instructing him to merge, merged as soon as it was safe to do so, then declined to be forced to back off by someone either not paying attention or not giving a damn about anything but being that extra vehicle space ahead -- no way. It may surprise some folks here who consider me too passive or inclined to compromise, but I don't back down from someone else's rudeness or bullying unless I just happen to feel like it, which I less and less do with pretty much each passing day.
Here's an idea: if people merging early is such a problem, and good manners are seriously expected to prevail when merging is no longer an option (in other words, when we're all on top of the construction/repair zone), don't post signs or flashing arrows. By giving that early warning, the road crews are needlessly alarming folks who are way too quick to get where they know they need to be, like Highball, Doug, me, and apparently 90-some-odd percent of the other posters on this topic.
It just occurred to me -- road crews are usually county or state workers. Cool! Since they put up the signs that prompt people to merge long before they apparently should, thereby actually causing the congestion problem -- in a roundabout way it's the government's fault, which is as it should be.0
