Worried about the direction this country is heading and a possible Democratic president.
Also I think we are going to be hit be al qeada if hillary or obama win.
I really want to prepare myself for the worst.
Protection of me and my family is key.

berkely,I have read your post on politics and you have some good thoughts.My thoughts on what to buy for Arrmagedon.Choose the rifle you already have that is comfortable and you can shoot accurately and buy all the ammo you can get.that and a good shotgun should do the trick 0 -

There won't be anyone to shoot at. They will shut down all ammo and reloading products. The manufactures will be taxed and regulated out of business. There will be no door to door weapons seizure.
The few shoot outs that will occur, will only serve to further the "domestic terrorist" idea in the media.0 -

Buy a Corona hand cranked grain grinder, and buy a bunch of 5 gallon buckets of oat groats, whole corn, and hard red winter wheat.
MREs or freeze dried food is a waste of money.

woodshermit- When I voted for Bush in 2000 I knew he would not be a great president. He proved to be a little worse than I expected but I was voting for the lesser of two evils. Same situation in 2004. If I had to do it over again I would. Knowing how bad Bush is I would still prefer him to either Gore or Kerry who both in my opinion would have been far, far worse.

Obama? Clinton? If these are my choices then give me any of the former three any day. Third party? That was done in 1992 and 1996 and all it did was ensure victory for Bill Clinton with less than half the votes both times. I have to be realistic and vote for the best choice on the ballot. You ask if somebody is worried about Democrats after 8 years of the Bush Administration? Yup. Right here. I am plenty worried.
As for the original question, at my current age and health I know I would not survive long in the post-apocalyptic environment some envision. But were I to prepare for such a scenario, I would want an AR15 and a 9mm pistol for urban survival involving fighting off gangs of thugs.
In the woods I would want a .223 bolt rifle with a scope and the same handgun. In the wild there would be more hunting than engaging in firefights. Why these guns? Ammo supply. Same caliber as our military uses so these might the best choices for scavenging ammo over time.
If possible I would add a shotgun with a variety of ammo for hunting and close defense work. I have a Mossberg 500 with a 20" barrel using multiple choke tubes that would be nearly perfect. But packing around two long guns over an extended period of foraging and evasion might not be realistic. If limited to only one gun it would be the shotgun. No one gun can do everything but a shotgun can do more than any other one gun.
But like I said, this is pure fantasy on my part. I would be among the first ones to die and I know it.0 -

When I moved up to the North Carolina mountains 12 years ago it was, in part, to have a place to hole up if tshtf.
I was a healthy young 45 year old man.
Since then my health has gone to hell, I am joined at the hip to the health food store and the pharmacy for supplements and prescriptions.
So if the shtf I simply wouldn't last too long.
But, at least my girlfriend could get along here. She has a daughter who has a husband and two kids in Atlanta.
Atlanta like most big cities would be a good place to suffer and die in this scenario, so, at least, they could come up here and make a go of it.

Anyone on sustaining meds has a problem in the urban survival scenario. I guess your first stop would be to loot a pharmacy and stock up as best as possible.
In reality only the young and strong would have any chance at survival. I am neither.0 -

I'd say buy a good .22LR also. Bulk ammo is $10. per 550 rds and you can stock up alot w/o a large investment.
You'll want something you can use to take game for the table w/o drawing much attenion. And a well placed shot w/a .22LR will take most N. American game reliably.0 -

I almost wonder how much power any president has anymore where many issues are concerned. If we are under the thumb of the world bank because they hold our debt. If a president is told to do this or that or else, for example, the Chinese will cash in all their U.S. bonds and bankrupt our system, don't you think his hands are tied? I don't know if this is the case, but it would explain NAFTA. 0 -
