Another police taser death...hits close to my home
Comment: I live in the City of Coral Gables, a small municipality that borders Miami. The main campus of the University of Miami is located in Coral Gables...not Miami. The condo units where this incident took place sell for around $500K. A lot of UM students rent condos here...the affluent ones whose parents pay. Lots of keggers and parties at this condo. I live less than 1 mile from this complex and the UM. Wanted to mention this since this is not a high crime area and the real estate is pricey.

Coral Gables and Miami-Dade police on Friday investigate the death of a man who died at an apartment complex near the University of Miami while in custody.
He was identified Friday afternoon as Xavier Jones, 29.
Jones had been disruptive at a party and resisted arrest, according to Miami-Dade police, whose homicide bureau is investigating the death.
About 2 a.m., police officers responded to a call about a scuffle at University Inn Condominium, 1280 S. Alahambra Cir., near the University of Miami. The building is across the street from the university and borders on U.S. 1.
After the man became disruptive inside the apartment, a security guard attempted to remove him from the property. The confrontation spilled outside.
Miami-Dade police said Jones displayed ''aggressive and combative behavior'' so a police officer used a Taser stun gun to restrain him.
After the discharge, Jones became unresponsive, and paramedics took him to Doctor's Hospital in Coral Gables, where he was pronounced dead.
A cause of death will be determined by the Miami-Dade medical examiner's office.
Note the palm trees...no snow!!![:D]

I think law enforcement has been gettig a little carried away with tasing people. It seems like it's the latest fad to just tase them now a days, instead of taking them down to the ground physicaly. If you have a couple of cops at the scene and they can't take a drunk down then they shouldn't be cops. For a non-lethal weapon...it sure is burying alot of people.
Well it's pretty obvious that you are not a cop and have never done the work! The Tazer is a tool, just like all of the other equipment that officers carry. Compliance by this guy would have kept him alive, not the fact that the Tazer was used. Go to your local PD and take a hit from one, then make a conscious arguement[;)]0 -

tasers are there to be used instead of getting in a physical battle with someone. I can hurt you faster and more insteance using my hands than using a taser.0 -

My son was TASERed and still kicked the deputy's butt.
I hope by that, you not saying your proud of his behavior.
I reckon you missed my updates on son Mark. He is mentally ill, definitely bipolar, and he has exhibited some signs of paranoid schizophrenia.
He was having a paranoid episode and hid in the restroom of a convenience store. He ignored the clerk's order to come out, so the clerk called the Sheriff's office. The poor deputy did not know what he was walking into. It is NOT a good idea to corner a crazy person in a confined space like a restroom. It is especially a bad idea, when that crazy person sees all law enforcement as the enemy who will stop at nothing to put him back into a hospital.
I feel badly for the deputy who was injured during the struggle, but in my opinion, he should have gotten some help before contacting Mark. But then, I know Mark, and the deputy did not.
Proud? No, not really. I was impressed by his prowess, especially in light of the fact that I have, many times, had to physically overpower Mark and take him down by myself, and I am not particularly strong. I am distressed and worried about Mark, since he is still in custody awaiting a mental competency hearing, and he won't call me to let me know what is going on.
it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
that being said, in desperation, folks will do what is necessary to survive, i saw a sheriff deputy diffuse a similar situation, with a transient. the boy stole a bag of chips and the clerk caught him. the deputy arrived and ask the boy if he was hungry, the boy said he was and proceeded to apoligise for the theft. the deputy the walked over and got a sandwich from the cooler, and paid for it and the chips, along with a soda. they walked out to the deputys car, where the deputy was on the radio. he then talked with the boy awhile, then drove away, the boy went about walking down the road with his backpack .it makes you wonder how many situations could be diffused with a little compassion[V]0 -
Compassion is a commodity that is sadly in short supply. 0 -

Every other case of death by taser (as the media sells it) has been proven to have a cause of death other than the se of taser. Most generally it is a heart condition.Okay the person had a weak heart and a high blood pressure or he had the flu at the time of being hit by a taser...That person still died because he was hit by a taser. If that person wasn't hit by that taser...he would have went on to live another day. I'm just saying it seems to me that cops are using the taser at the drop of hat instead of taking a differant approach at the situation.0 -

well the cornoners who examined them disagree with your WebMD diagnosis [:o)]0 -
The news media has put the tasser death toll to be around 200 so far.[:0] 0 -
Some of you are missing the facts. The suspect had ''aggressive and combative behavior''. When the police show up, they are there for one reason. To restore peace. Thats why they are sometimes referred to as "peace officers". When police are on the scene, people need to do what they say. He didn't obey the police and he got what he deserved. I have many friends in law enforcement and I can honestly say that I wouldn't want their job. I commend all of the poilce officers in our country and wish they had more power to control bad situations. Sadly, the news never reports the thousands of suspects that didn't resist arrest and obeyed the officers' commands. Those suspects didn't get hit with a "billy club", "TASER", or anything else for that matter. 0 -

Unlike batons, OC spray, etc. it doesn't function as a pain compliance weapon, where the idea is that the person will give in to make it stop hurting.
It's current interrupts the body's electrical system, causing loss of large muscle control. It's effect is totlly involuntary, the pain caused by this is actually just a secondary effect.
Those cases where you hear of someone being hit with Taser and continuing to violently resist aren't due to their toughness or willpower. It's because either both probes never made good contact or one became dislodged. It's forming and an electrical circuit and if the body acts to close it it's own circuit gets interrupted. Ever seen the videos of huge bulls being hit with them, dropping like a rock and convulsing? That's not because they lacked willpower.
These probes are basically little darts with barbs to keep them from pulling out. The issue is these can only be designed to go so deep and the barbs so big before they become injurious themselves.0 -
watrulookinat-you just justified the reason for police carrying a taser in your statement above.
Because you ARE more likely to want to try to take on a cop armed only with his bare hands than one with a taser. Hopefully, when you see the taser, you will comply and it won't have to be used. If you still choose not to comply, well... hold on to your "donkey" cause it's gonna get exciting.[:D]0 -
Wow... so quick to TASER me??
And for a statement above??[:D]0 -
Historically, people have died after being knocked down, struck with a baton, blackjack, sap, metal knucks, the barrel of a revolver, getting MACEd, getting OCd, and- would you believe- after simply getting handcuffed and placed in the backseat of a patrol car (positional asphyxiation). Have never seen a job desciption for ANY LEO that said "Engage in a fair fight with persons you arrest." The concept is to use sufficent force to overcome resistance and effect an arrest. Frankly, a TASER is a heck of a lot less damaging than taking a Mag-light across the collar bone. 0 -
"Put your hands behind your back or I'll taze you bro."[:D] 0 -
I was watching the Military channel yesterday and on Weaponology... their next show will be about the newest TASER out there. They were showing real life demos, looks interesting. I'm going to check it out. One of the Tasers looked just like a shotgun with a look a like eotech sight on it. 0 -

Hey, nunn.
First of all, add my support and encouragement to the huge pile you've already gotten from the GB folks.
Second, having been Tasered myself, I know how dedicated you have to be to get up and keep fighting after that first jolt. For the overwhelming majority of people, the Taser is the end of the argument.0 -

When you fight/wrestle someone to the ground the odds of injury skyrocket above the odds when a taser is used. The taser's purpose is to disable a combative person, a few seconds at a time, in order to avoid having to wrestle/fight them into submission which is guarenteed injuries.
It's not about whether or not the cops can take someone in a fight, it's about avoiding a fight and therfore avoiding injuries to cops and suspects. I've been tasered, and I'll take that anyday over an arse whoopin'.
By the way, there is only one case in which the taser was proven to be the cause of death. That was an instance in which the person was continuously shocked for over 2 minutes straight. In red above. Now the thought of that is kinda scary. I thought the company that makes tasers made them in such a way as a long, continous shock (2 minutes for example) was not possible. Do you have anymore details on this 2 minute taser shock?0 -
you can keep squeezing the trigger, and it will keep shocking until the battery goes dead. It gives a shock for 5 seconds at a time, but if you keep squeezing the trigger it keeps repeating the 5 second shock.
I'll see if I can find a link to that case.0 -
found it, and I was wrong about legnth of shock
